  • Behind Allegany Central 1238 on the Western Maryland from Cumberland, Md. to Frostburg, Md. November 3, 1990 (VHS Tape) Click on 480p
Prior to 1991, when the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad acquired former Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 Consolidation Type steam locomotive #734, trips to Frostburg ran behind former Canadian Pacific G5 4-6-2 #1238.

Two steam locomotives were initially used on the Western Maryland Railroad, #1238 and #1286. When disputes with the owner of the track became insurmountable, from what I understand, they were taken back and stored in Verona, Va. That may be the home town of Jack Showalter, the owner.

It has been said that 1238 and 1286 are in storage at the Prairie Dog Central Railway in Winnipeg, Manitoba awaiting restoration. It's a pity both engines weren't bought by Jerry Jacobson, but it's also good to know that these two G5 Pacifics have been repatriated back to their homeland of Canada.

Never met him, but I've heard MANY stories about how hard he worked those two 4-6-2s.

Both are stored awaiting 1472s that will likely never arrive. Only best location is Buckingham Branch RR.

I hope those 2 Pacifics get running again. They could go to Jerry Jacobson to team up with #1293 and #1278 (soon to be restored).
