I personally knew a young teenager back in the 1980's who lost his arm above the elbow by a moving train and had to have the rest of it amputated at the shoulder as it was so totally mangled the doctors couldn't save any of it. All because he was messing around playing fun and games and was jumping on and off moving trains in a switching yard. His parents had to not only pay thousands of dollars for all the medical treatments he had to undergo afterward but also had to pay thousands of dollars more for all the court fees as well because the Rail-Road's lawyer's as well as the judge deemed it no fault on the part of the Rail-Road. Another thing with the equipment being unlocked is that it is currently unknown, who knows if he could have picked the locks or stumbled across it unlocked, It could be anything and i am only trying to spread awareness of what he is doing so that this does not happen in the future. As a railway worker and trainspotter in the UK, This entire video sums up the reason our system is kept as safe as it is with lineside fences covering track, AWS + TPWS nationwide (and in some places ETCS) and electric sets of points (our word for switches). Whenever I go out trainspotting I always make sure I stand behind the yellow line and if spotting from the lineside always make sure I am behind any exclusion zone or fencing. I hope this incident reminds others not to try this as it is not only expressly dangerous to yourself but others too, obviously.

As a locomotive engineer and a railroader this is concerning that this guy is interfering with mainline switches. This can cause derailments and serious accidents to the train crew and community. For us working on the railroad it requires authority and verbal instructions/permission from the dispatcher to even throw that mainline dual control switch- without such authority and permission that would be a serious violation for us so to see this guy do something so blatant and reckless really gets me angry. This is to ensure that nothing becomes damaged because who knows what they are doing regardless of knowing how it works they could be doing something else off camera we don't see which could result in failure of the equipment working without permission to do so. SO that is why there is legal ties too its to protect the people using the machine/equipment and to keep others safe.
Matter fact I know of a story where kids messed with a barrier and it stopped working and a old person didn't hear the train coming and was smashed as it came because she didn't see the barriers or lights blinking.. Sad story. Only reason they knew the kids was because of a street camera nearby.

That is why in countries like thr UK, Ireland and in European countries (also my country Malaysia) the switch for the crossover point is now located on a control panel in the station master’s office and no longer located next to the crossover point. The master’s room is often locked outside of business hours so the chance of other employees or outsiders tempering with the panel is low. Even there is a sign on top of the panel which states that only authorized personnel (station master on duty) are allowed to use the control panel to set the switches for the signal and for the crossover points.

I watched an NS intermodal train come to a stop right outside of my hotel room in Gainesville, VA a few days ago. Most of the train had passed me and just the last few cars were sitting there. About 5 minutes passed, I'm not too sure what they were waiting on but the train started moving again, and let me tell you that slack was something serious. Several quiet bangs that turned into progressively louder bangs followed by a HUGE bang as the cars in front of me lurched forward, going from standing still to at least 3 mph in a split second. Seeing that...there's no way in hell I'd be standing anywhere near a train that's sitting idle because you have absolutely no clue when it's gonna start moving again...and if you're in a bad spot you will have exactly ZERO time to get out of the way. The whole last part of this video with him getting on and off the train sitting there was crazy.

One detail that I haven't seen yet in the comments regards the hoppera cars sitting next to the locomotive. They are very special cars owned by a third party called Herzog. On a contract basis, they do maintenance of right-of-way, especially maintaining ballast. They also frequently show up after a derailment to help reconstruct the tracks.

Now I am a railfan. but the ONLY time I have EVER touched rail equipment was with supervision, on a closed downline, that I checked, made sure it was safe. and I never touched it again. ever. it was unlocked when we found it. (a padlock was found on the ground a good distance away that we assume was taken off and thrown) we locked it. I know what it means and how bad this is but it was a closed down line I personally checked 3 times, the tracks were dug up at a point. all crossings were either disabled or removed, and I checked online sources on said tracks. I knew what I was doing, I confirmed that what I was doing was safe, and I made sure that the rail equipment was locked, and secure. it was in a abandoned drop off area behind a abandoned business. no train ran on that track for years upon years. I looked out not only for my safety, but the other people there to. you can be mad at me. But I made sure that it was safe, and not dangerous like what was going on in this video.

One can clearly hear from his voice that there's a developmental issue with the young man. His physical age and his mental age don't match up. Young lad needs assistance in life because despite knowing how switches work he's absolutely not aware of the consequences of doing what he's doing. Charging him with fines or other punitive actions will not teach him anything. He needs a guide and a personal care taker for him to learn life around him.
