Que the Twilight one theme. I was digging through some long lost boxes last night, and there was my Taplin Twin that I haven't laid eyes on in twenty years, at least. What wonderful engines they are!
Thanks, appreciate the comment. I am going to do a bit of work on it and will film a cleaner run in the future - so much fun running this engine, a real beast!
Good morning Mark, a very interesting engine. I have just looked up in my copy of the Model Aero Engine Encyclopedia and it states the ideal prop for sport and C/L is a10x8in. RPM range between 6 - 10000rpm. Hope this helps. Terry
Hi Terry, good morning to you 😀 thanks for the information and comment, it is greatly appreciated. It is certainly one beast of an engine and the easiest starting engine I have, just a joy to run.
Yes, certainly blew some muck out, and think I need a gasket on the exhaust, but it did run nice, and started so easy. Would be good to see it in the air!
Thank you Mark for sharing that with us , i have heard of these motors but never sean one (don't think there would be many make it out to New Zealand ) . I am a fan of diesels and have four of my own, no twins though , yes a very nice engine. thanks
Thanks for the comment, totally agree, think it was probably drowned in oil for storage many years ago. It was running fairly clean and feeling good by the end of the session. Also, stripping is quite a big job being a twin, so if its running will now I will leave it for now. 😜
Given that the case does not have a serial number and going by the faded anodizing and slotted head it may be an Aurora made Taplin using the UK made case. Does it have any marking on the backplate?
No, nothing on the back plate. Only inscriptions are Talpin Twin on the front housing, and on the right mounting lug Made in England and The British Patient.
Lovely stuff Mark, I was nearly as excited as you, watching that. We do need to know the model you have in mind for it! By the way, inspired by you, I'm just completing a Tomboy 48" following your build. I have a really nice Frog 150 to go in it.
Thanks for the comment, you will love the Tomboy they really are excellent, and the Frog 150 is ideal. Really pleased you enjoyed the Taplin video, I am looking forward to doing a little bit of work on the engine and having a cleaner rerun! But it is a very exciting experience running it, a real beast! I was thinking of trying it in my GP Trainer 60, but slightly worried it wouldn't have the power for it, so may have to build something, I was thinking of perhaps a Red Zephyr! 😜
@@MarkRobinson555 Red Zephyr would be beautiful, so long as the engine bay can properly accommodate and show-off the Taplin. That engine needs to be seen!
Hahaha, that would be nice, but not sure it would have enough power for such a large model, and I don't have the storage for one, parhaps somthing a little smaller like a Zephyr!?
@@MarkRobinson555 Actually, the model for the Taplin Twin was called Radio Queen. Designed by Major Taplin. My flying buddy has the plan, it's about 8 feet span...🤔😳 My bad.
Hi Mark I have a collection of Engines diesel and glows dating from the 1940's to quite modern - would you be willing/able to assist with distribution to other collectors ?
Hi Keith, I am assuming you are looking to sell the engines, if thats the case ebay may be your best option, howerver if you are not selling, but just looking for a good home for them where they will be welcomed, use and put into models then I can certainly help
Yes it may well have been at first with the contra piston being stuck. It was better at the end of the running as it started to free up. Looking forward to giving it a lot more runtime, once I have done a bit of work on it.
So nice to hear one of these again. I have my late fathers early green anodised one that he bought new around 1960.
Oh, one of the early ones, excellent, lovely engine, you should get it running!

Hahaha, excellent, get that thing running again, they sound great!
Fantastic! Very cool engine.
Thank you very much!
WOW! What a noisy dirty beast mark. Love it!
Hahaha, knew you would love it norm! Thanks for the comment 😀
wow, what a cool little engine!
Thanks very much for the comment, pleased you enjoyed it! 😀
Nice analysis of the issue Mark.
There’s nothing quite like a well fettled Taplin Twin.

I was just thinking a perfect model for your torquey engine would be a Anatov 2 big biplane. Can you picture it flying? Take care love your videos
Very cool! Love the sound
Glad you enjoy it!
That is some beast mate nice 1 mark luck you ,great run
Thanks for the comment, pleased you liked it!
Oh the muck 😂 that's a beast love to see it in a plane 😊

Planning to do some work on it and post another, cleaner run! 😜
@@MarkRobinson555I still think it's got a lot more punch to offer the front cylinder doesnt seem right yet.

Haven't seen one of those for many decades..... cool..... The contra on the front cylinder seems to be stuck... Runs well though... 🙂
Yes, runs lovely, the contra piston frees up towards the end of the video 😜
Do more builds like the pt 60 it was really good
Nice Engine well done Mark, maybe a strip down and clean would not hurt, from the engine doctor Australia. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

@@MarkRobinson555 It is a very simple job really to strip and repair that engine.

Lovely engine Mark. Now to find a suitable airframe to use
Yes definitely, was thinking my GP Trainer 60, but not sure it would be powerful enough, may have to build something for it!
Radio Queen would be lovely. Keep the Taplin thread going :-)
@@57andyp yes that would be great, I also wonder about a Red Zephyr! 😜

Lovely engine. But not easy to tune ☺
Thanks for the comment, its appreciated
I have also found a picture of a 10cc Taplin with four cylinders. How about getting that one to run on song.
Hahaha, now that would be nice, never see one, probably need a mortgage to get one! Hahaha
Never even heard about a four cylinder Taplin. Would love to atleast take a look even if it's just a picture
Why not use a smooth metal flywheel rather than a prop?
Its an aero engine, it would overheat without the cooling from the prop.
Model? Smog Hog perhaps?
Great suggestion, appreciated
Eh, the smell is not transferable... :)
Hahahaha, that would be good!
@@MarkRobinson555 , For me this is the smell of childhood.
