at my school the teacher didn't like it but for tests it was allowed. When our class teacher got a brain tumor we made a sketch for him where one was acting like he was the teacher. Part of it was that he saw someone chewing gum, telling him to throw it away and the saying "if there is anyone else who has a gum, you come here and throw it in the garbage!" and everyone was standing up and walking up to throw it away. We were all very glad that he survived the surgery.
I’m just gonna say as someone who graduated in 2020, the classes that allowed me to snack were the ones I could pay attention in. Because I wasn’t STARVING and waiting out the clock. (Side note, thank you to the teachers who recognized drawing was a way to keep my hands busy so my mind could focus)
As an ADHD person, I completely identify with that. The teachers who let me figure out my own workarounds were the ones whose classes I thrived in. Doodling, snacking, reading instead of hearing the material, working ahead in the textbook, helping other students...
teachers who let me listen to music helped me pay attention so much, i'd remember a song and associated it with what i learned and did so much better in those classes than the others

I was thinking the exact same thing. My school had snack time for all students grade K-6. A cafeteria worker would bring the snack cart to each room and every student would get a healthy snack and a drink - we could choose milk, chocolate milk or apple juice. It was free for all. They still do this too. At the high school (grade 7-12 no middle school) they didn’t have snack time, but they had two vending machines w/reduced prices and if you had late lunch or were just hungry you could go to the machines while you had study hall and everyone had at least one period every day that was study hall. I absolutely loved my school still do…I’m a proud alumnus of NEB. 🐆

Yes! I was allowed a small fidget toy to help me concentrate but when ~the rise of the pop its~ happened I wasn’t allowed to have the fidget and all things fidget were banned. It’s really sad that when “trends” happen around fidget toys and associated items it can affect the kids who need them
@@moonjellyfish23 when fidget spinners got super popular, i (an audhd person) along with a bunch of other kids in class would bring them to school. one day, a kid (15-16yr old) was passing his back and forth to the kids around him so my teacher told him and the kids around him to put them up. he got mad and asked "why are they (me) allowed to have theirs??" my teacher calmly said "they aren't disrupting the class" and let me keep mine out. teachers should go by a case by case basis; everyone shouldn't be punished just for what certain people are doing
If I had her as a teacher I would try extra hard in her class just because she gives students basic respect and treats them like people, we need more teachers like this

First of all - we are no longer in school, second - I was (at the time) seven months pregnant, better take your finger back to your own department and get the h e 🏒🏒 outta my face! I don't know what school she retired from but I'm sure her students were glad to see her gone. 🤨
Seriously consider investing your time and money in a double major (or even a minor) in something you can get another job in in case you get burnt out. It is a very real reality. Also consider a side hustle…that isn’t a pyramid scheme…inflation has many many teachers working second and their jobs…and it just in the summer either. (And for the record, it wasn’t the kids that eventually had me leave the field, it was colleagues like this, the system, a few bad admins, and many parents that did it). Many others feel the same way. I’m not trying to dissuade you from your passion, I’m only encouraging you to look at the stats, and all sides, so you can leave your options open in a few years. Also, be very very picky about WHERE you teach (do extensive research about the school and the principal before you accept a job…both will make or break your experience. That is first hand knowledge).

Oh my, the other teachers who try to tell you what the rules of your own classroom are gets me. As a specials teacher for 20 years, I had the hardest time trying to explain to classroom teachers that my rules were different than theirs. I can't keep 22 different classrooms' rules straight so I logically just use my own.

In the fourth grade i was dealing with a lot of stress from the epilepsy, so I started eating my hair. I had one teacher who would let me chew gum so I wouldn't literally trim and swallow tiny bits of hair. But after a few months they changed the classes since there were an odd number of teachers and I no longer had her. That school also tried to fail me for kissing too many days, while having testing done, and seizures and migraines. Shit was wild
I wish all teachers were like you. I have a teenage son who needs someone who can help him find ways to focus and who is adaptable and flexible and it seems NO one in his school is capable of handling or of catching the attention of an extra intelligent child with severe ADHD... it makes me sad as a parent because if he is homeschooling, he misses the best social aspects and opportunities for scholarships and proms and all that, but unfortunately, it is what is probably best for him without people who can help him learn to school better...

If you ever need to, maybe look into cyber school. I did cyber school my last two years because I had severe anxiety and ADHD. We were given free laptops and supplies. I had online teachers and could do class work at my own pace. I still attended my district's prom, and the cyber school had social events all the time for kids. I did so much better and actually graduated ahead of time.
Ugh I'm head of housekeeping at a luxury resort and I can't tell you how much I love when the kids come to the front desk and ask for stuff or when they help with check in. It's just so damn cute to see them trying to peer up over the big counter.
If anything test scores would go up from having class snacks as they’re no longer focused on being hungry also - those kind of teachers make just all around great people - keep up the good work ms Chang

You can easily tell the difference between a teacher is working because she cares about the kids vs the ones who are there just to power trip! I really enjoyed cool teachers like you growing up. I had a hard time concentrating and teachers either gave me a horrible time or they were super chill about pulling me back in or doing something that helps me stay on task.
I just want to thank you for being the kind of teacher you are. Teachers have such a big impact on the kids.. my littles teacher this year just doesn't fit her learning style. She's in the spectrum and the teacher recommended they take away her IEP and accomodations, so I applied for a 504. It's been 2 months since I turned in all the paperwork and I don't even have an appointment. My kiddo gets so stressed about going to school she makes herself sick or even has a meltdown (she's on the spectrum and also has ADHD) unfortunately because the teacher and her styles clash so badly it's undone so much progress we've made over the years :( it's such a bummer. So that k you for being such a kind and fun teacher. The impact you're making of those kids lives is something you can't measure, but it's so valuable 💕
I couldn’t pass on by, did your whole iep team agree with her recommendations to remove her iep and accommodations? Do you have an advocate? I just feel so sad that your child is having so much trouble with this particular teacher, I hope everything works out. My son had an iep under the other health impaired category, 4th grade to 12th and uses the disability office in college for accommodations. If your child was having success with an iep I would fight to have it reinstated. Don’t let one incompatible teacher cause more problems with your child’s schooling, it’s tough enough for our kids already. Best wishes
Love this...I was always a stickler for rules that mattered (eg don't run in the hallway lol). But things like this never bothered me. I wanted my kiddos to feel comfortable. When I'm uncomfortable I have a really hard time concentrating...They're little, how could I expect them to? Things I allowed that most teachers didn't: sweatshirts that weren't the school colors, doodling while we listened to music (I taught music...and frequently had "listen and draw" segments that encouraged them to use their creativity, a lot of my kiddos loved art and drew super well), snacks in class, chewing gum, using the restroom as soon as they asked (unless another student had just gone, the bathroom nearest my classroom was one person only)...I was a really shy kid, I never wanted to let on when I needed anything and felt horribly self conscious asking anyone for anything. If they had worked up the courage to ask, there had better have been a REALLY good reason to say no...and that was only a reason that was a matter of safety/security of my kiddos. It's really nice to see that there are teachers like you still teaching 😊💙
My school was majorly understaffed and underpaid. So the teachers never cared as long as you weren't disruptive. I would bring a lot of food and just snack in all of my classes, discreetly, like the teachers told us to. Didnt learn much, but i sure didnt starve.
I am visually impaired and the lady in the copy office in school always hated to see me bc it meant she had to go dig out the extra large paper and load it to copy something for me so I could see it 😂
In Ohio when I was in high school, and we took those state tests you need to graduate - they gave us all snacks before we started it. Ms. White would have had a fit 😂
the ants line was too real 😅 we have specific areas tht r super hard to clean so they usually just dont bother so the room we’re in is free reign w eating EXCEPT for in those key areas. they’re happy to oblige bc they also really dont want ants!

I've only had a handful of teachers like you and the others were like "the one you try to avoid" I was undiagnosed autism with dyslexia and diagnosed ADD, because getting me medicated was more important than helping me learn. Had a colleague try to do the gum thing to me once. I said "Yeah... I gave it to them because their water got cut off and they were self-conscious about their breath because they couldn't brush their teeth." I said all this while chewing some gum myself so I blew a bubble, popped it, and began cracking it as loudly as I could waiting for them to respond. They just walked out.
Those “Mrs. White” characters are the bane of my existence, yet I feel 100% vindicated and internally calm just by seeing it recognized with humor. (It’s funny cause it’s true!) Love to all our Mrs. Change out there!!
Every year we had to do standardized testing for the MSA (Maryland state assessment). No matter what time we did it, we were given a snack beforehand. You were offered time to have a snack between testing too. The second snack was sometimes given just after lunch depending on what lunch hour you had, before we started again, and so would sometimes be something sweet like donuts, cookies, etc. This.. was tremendously helpful because you weren’t focused on being hungry or focused on when lunch was coming, etc.
Chewing gum helped me concentrate in school too! It was how I could stim in a way that wouldn’t get me made fun of! I really love that you let students do this! You’re awesome!!
I get told all the time that I'm too casual with my students. All I know is we enjoy our lessons and they exceed in their test scores. So there you go. I'm not changing my teaching methods. I love your videos. They bring an absolute smile to my face and make me happy every time.
The only teacher who ever let us chew gum in class was my 8th grade literature teacher as long as we didn't stick it under the desks. She even gave out gum herself during tests because it would help us concentrate. Even though I'm not a teacher myself, I still relate to the "annoying teacher" thing. I saw it a lot from the health teacher when I was a student in high school. She would criticize and micromanage everything all the other teachers were doing. The only teacher she didn't mess with was the biology teacher. She tried it once and was sent packing with a bruised ego. Biology teacher (now retired, but I still talk to her) has a quick mind and a sharper tongue 😂
I remember someone at my elementary school trying to make it a “gum free environment.” Didn’t last, never worked, parents complained pretty quickly but it lasted until the end of the school year. It made people stop leaving it on the ground or blowing bubbles in her fifth grade class at least.
I remember I had a teacher like this in 9th grade. She would constantly just walk in and tell us we can't do stuff the actual teacher of the class let us do. So glad it's not just student to teacher thing with these kind of people
The only way I see eating in class effecting test scores is making it better. They are nourished and able to focus more instead of being focused on how hungry they are. The other kids won’t hear constant stomach growling which can be distracting

She's in the spectrum and the teacher recommended they take away her IEP and accomodations, so I applied for a 504. It's been 2 months since I turned in all the paperwork and I don't even have an appointment. My kiddo gets so stressed about going to school she makes herself sick or even has a meltdown (she's on the spectrum and also has ADHD) unfortunately because the teacher and her styles clash so badly it's undone so much progress we've made over the years :( it's such a bummer.
So that k you for being such a kind and fun teacher. The impact you're making of those kids lives is something you can't measure, but it's so valuable 💕
I couldn’t pass on by, did your whole iep team agree with her recommendations to remove her iep and accommodations? Do you have an advocate? I just feel so sad that your child is having so much trouble with this particular teacher, I hope everything works out. My son had an iep under the other health impaired category, 4th grade to 12th and uses the disability office in college for accommodations. If your child was having success with an iep I would fight to have it reinstated. Don’t let one incompatible teacher cause more problems with your child’s schooling, it’s tough enough for our kids already. Best wishes

Love this...I was always a stickler for rules that mattered (eg don't run in the hallway lol). But things like this never bothered me. I wanted my kiddos to feel comfortable. When I'm uncomfortable I have a really hard time concentrating...They're little, how could I expect them to? Things I allowed that most teachers didn't: sweatshirts that weren't the school colors, doodling while we listened to music (I taught music...and frequently had "listen and draw" segments that encouraged them to use their creativity, a lot of my kiddos loved art and drew super well), snacks in class, chewing gum, using the restroom as soon as they asked (unless another student had just gone, the bathroom nearest my classroom was one person only)...I was a really shy kid, I never wanted to let on when I needed anything and felt horribly self conscious asking anyone for anything. If they had worked up the courage to ask, there had better have been a REALLY good reason to say no...and that was only a reason that was a matter of safety/security of my kiddos. It's really nice to see that there are teachers like you still teaching 😊💙

My school was majorly understaffed and underpaid. So the teachers never cared as long as you weren't disruptive. I would bring a lot of food and just snack in all of my classes, discreetly, like the teachers told us to. Didnt learn much, but i sure didnt starve.

I am visually impaired and the lady in the copy office in school always hated to see me bc it meant she had to go dig out the extra large paper and load it to copy something for me so I could see it 😂
In Ohio when I was in high school, and we took those state tests you need to graduate - they gave us all snacks before we started it. Ms. White would have had a fit 😂

the ants line was too real 😅 we have specific areas tht r super hard to clean so they usually just dont bother so the room we’re in is free reign w eating EXCEPT for in those key areas. they’re happy to oblige bc they also really dont want ants!

I officially love you. I've only had a handful of teachers like you and the others were like "the one you try to avoid" I was undiagnosed autism with dyslexia and diagnosed ADD, because getting me medicated was more important than helping me learn. I just want to say thank you for what you do ❤️❤️❤️

Had a colleague try to do the gum thing to me once. I said "Yeah... I gave it to them because their water got cut off and they were self-conscious about their breath because they couldn't brush their teeth." I said all this while chewing some gum myself so I blew a bubble, popped it, and began cracking it as loudly as I could waiting for them to respond. They just walked out.
Those “Mrs. White” characters are the bane of my existence, yet I feel 100% vindicated and internally calm just by seeing it recognized with humor. (It’s funny cause it’s true!) Love to all our Mrs. Change out there!!

Every year we had to do standardized testing for the MSA (Maryland state assessment). No matter what time we did it, we were given a snack beforehand. You were offered time to have a snack between testing too. The second snack was sometimes given just after lunch depending on what lunch hour you had, before we started again, and so would sometimes be something sweet like donuts, cookies, etc. This.. was tremendously helpful because you weren’t focused on being hungry or focused on when lunch was coming, etc.
I had no idea other people chew to concentrate this is so liberating
I have never been a teacher but i remember these teachers when i was in school, they just show up and throw off the whole vibe of the fun classes

I get told all the time that I'm too casual with my students. All I know is we enjoy our lessons and they exceed in their test scores. So there you go. I'm not changing my teaching methods. I love your videos. They bring an absolute smile to my face and make me happy every time.
The only teacher who ever let us chew gum in class was my 8th grade literature teacher as long as we didn't stick it under the desks. She even gave out gum herself during tests because it would help us concentrate.
Even though I'm not a teacher myself, I still relate to the "annoying teacher" thing. I saw it a lot from the health teacher when I was a student in high school. She would criticize and micromanage everything all the other teachers were doing. The only teacher she didn't mess with was the biology teacher. She tried it once and was sent packing with a bruised ego. Biology teacher (now retired, but I still talk to her) has a quick mind and a sharper tongue 😂
I remember someone at my elementary school trying to make it a “gum free environment.” Didn’t last, never worked, parents complained pretty quickly but it lasted until the end of the school year. It made people stop leaving it on the ground or blowing bubbles in her fifth grade class at least.

I remember I had a teacher like this in 9th grade. She would constantly just walk in and tell us we can't do stuff the actual teacher of the class let us do. So glad it's not just student to teacher thing with these kind of people

The only way I see eating in class effecting test scores is making it better. They are nourished and able to focus more instead of being focused on how hungry they are. The other kids won’t hear constant stomach growling which can be distracting
