    If anyone's curious why they've been so slow to reprint them, they recently replied to someone on twitter saying, "The software that we once used to send designs to the printers has been phased out, so all the artwork for older books would need to be recreated from scratch in different design software. Unfortunately this is quite a job for some of the intricate artwork!". I'm glad I collected the set shortly after they went out of print, but I've seen the more obscure ones go for reasonable prices occasionally so it's definitely possible.

      @@BeautifulBooks I’ve always been fascinated by the knowledge and depth this tales have been able to convey with such simplicity directly into the psyche of peoples in their respective culture. The writings of Alan Dundes have been a huge inspiration and also I’ve found there’s a new wave of thinkers that are putting tremendous emphasis on the psychological significance of these ageless tales and that has helped me to understand not only the circumstances in which they were written but also how they help to explain the very fabric of our reality. It’s a field that’s worth a lifetime of dedication to its study.

    I wonder if you can help, though: How often have you seen these books come in and out of print? Am I likely to ever see a new printing of the Red Book for example? or of the much rarer Brown or even Orange books? I'd be very grateful for your gut feeling on this!
    Thanks again for your wonderful work!

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 4 lety +4

      Foolish Fish Oh thanks, that’s so lovely to hear! The first four or five books they released in the series were reprinted several times, which is why they are much cheaper if you are looking for them secondhand (blue, red, green etc), but the last few (brown, orange, grey) were printed only once, and in smaller numbers as they were primarily marketed at people who had been collecting the series for several years and intended to complete it, so they come on to the market much more rarely (and even then often as part of a set). Folio commissioned the artwork themselves (and the text of course is out of copyright) so they have the rights to reprint and have often hinted that they will do so “some day”. As I understand it, there was some issue when moving between software programs a few years ago that caused them to lose the layout they had, so reprinting would require re-doing all the text and artwork, so it’s a bit more involved than you’d expect for a reprint. They do get a lot of requests to reprint this series though, and their editorial direction of late has included a lot more fantasy type works (meaning their customer base is expanding away from their historically more classical readers), so my gut feeling is that it’s something they probably will do in future. It’s a lovely series and such a beautiful homage to the golden age of design 😀

      Yes, that's right. The fairy books are colored only on the top edge of the page block. (This is actually pretty common with vintage books, which is the design aesthetic they were going for with this series. Although I personally prefer colour on all the sides!)

  • @NobodyHere

    What an amazing collection! Thank you for this information packed video. I only managed to find the first five books (colours). I wonder why the later books are harder to find and when they do come up for sale, they are asking or sold at what I would consider to be rather too high prices? ($300-600!) Did FS print less of them later on, or people suddenly began collecting them more later on so they are on higher demands? I would have thought that earlier printings or editions are harder to find....

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 5 lety +3

      Murasaki & Co Yes, FS printed less of the later colours, which is why they are much harder to find and therefore more expensive. The series was promoted heavily in the beginning, so there were several print runs of the first few books. In addition, the last three books were mostly marketed directly to people who had previously been collecting the series, so they are not so often sold individually. Best of luck in building your collection (they are all gorgeous books) and take heart that FS have indicated they may reprint the series some day...

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 5 lety +1

      Roo Welcome 😀 I have been collecting for a long time, and buying the FS Fairy Books once a year at the issue price was very much more affordable than for anyone trying to pick them up now after they have gone out of print! I also source a lot of my books second hand and have patience in waiting until I find an affordable copy (I’ve figured out how to do amazing things with library discards, for example, by learning to repair tears and replace endpapers, which helps a lot with budgeting). The Folio Society commissioned these illustrations especially for their series, so if these pictures appeal strongly to you, then you should go with the FS editions (the earlier books in the series can be found for reasonable prices second hand, and they may in future reprint the others again - it has happened before with other very popular books of theirs). The vintage first edition copies have absolutely stunning bindings and nice b&w illustrations (my website has a list of all these covers if you’d like to look), but are probably as hard if not harder to build a full set with due to rarity and popularity. Easton Press did a leather-bound set set based on the first editions which has great shelf appeal but is similarly expensive and rare. If you just want the stories, Dover put out an inexpensive matched set of paperbacks with the illustrations from the first editions - the glued bindings probably won’t last a particularly long time, but it’s a cheap cute option. Good luck!

      Robin Summers Yes, I definitely recommend looking for single volumes if you’re building up from scratch! It’s only the last three that are hard to find/expensive. And if you do it one or two a year (which is how they were released) hopefully the last ones will be reissued by then...

      Patience helps a lot with book collecting 😀 The early volumes in the FS series (blue, pink, red, etc) are relatively easy to find second hand, but the last few are much harder and therefore usually very expensive. There are links the books in the description box that you can follow to get an idea of the cost. FS might reprint them one day, but there are no guarantees. Good luck with your hunt 😘

  • @roosrandoms
    @roosrandoms Před 5 lety +1

    Has anyone ever written a list of these in order of rarity. I know the last ones are more rare but would be interesting to have a list in an estimated order of rarity.

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 5 lety +2

      I can write you a rarity list now if you like ;) The first four (blue, pink, red, yellow,) are by far the most common, because they were given away as joining sets, and so they had several print runs. Green also had a few runs as many people were enticed to collect by the joining offer. Next in line is the 'middle volumes' (brown, violet, crimson) which are less common. Lilac and olive had a small print run, and grey and orange even slightly smaller, making these the rarest of the set. These last four were primarily bought by people who had been collecting the whole series (we received a mail-out when they were released but they were not widely advertised elsewhere) so they don't often come up on the second hand market except as part of a very expensive set.

  • @ferny8610
    @ferny8610 Před rokem

    How many books were there in the original collection?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před rokem

      These 12 books in the FS rainbow fairy book series are the same text and volumes as the ones in the original coloured fairy books by Andrew Lang (just the illustrations are different - the list of originals is here: beautifulbooks.info/illustrated-bibliographies/andrew-lang-the-original-rainbow-fairy-books/). But Lang also wrote a number of other story collections for children (e.g. The True Story Book, the Red Book of Animal Stories) making up a total collection of 25 books in the whole series including the rainbow fairy books.

    WHERE DID YOU GET THESE?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 2 lety +1

      I got them when they first came out direct from the Folio Society. Sadly they are out of print now, so you have to find them secondhand, but there is always a chance they will be reissued!

    which books of these have foxes in these? I love to hear stories with foxes in them and I want to know which of these fairytales books have foxes and how many stories have them.

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 3 lety +1

      At least half of the books have tales starring foxes, and a few more have them as supporting characters. This page lists all the stories in each volume: beautifulbooks.info/illustrated-bibliographies/folio-society-rainbow-fairy-books/

    Doesnt look like theyre bound in signatures and the illustrations arent the originals. Best to buy the Dover editions, published in the 60s, when Dover was still making perfect bindings and they have all the original illustrations. Later Dover stopped that and started using glued bindings. Still, they are the best, unless you can afford to buy original firsts, which are very expensive. I used to get the Dovers in 68 for $1.25 and read them to my wife every night when we went to bed. The illustrations used to make me think of the songs of Donovan. I still have several from that time, which I bought not too long ago from Ebay.

      Actually, the FS volumes are all smyth sewn and are bound in signatures, but yes, they are definitely not the original illustrations - the illustrations for the series in this video were specially commissioned by the Folio Society and aren't available anywhere else. The original b&w illustrations that are used in the Dovers are quite lovely too of course :) There are a few other publishers who do versions with the original illustrations as well - Easton Press did some gorgeous leatherbound ones (but they are scarily expensive secondhand since they are out of print), and Barnes & Noble have done at least the Blue Fairy book as well which is quite nice. As you say, the current Dover editions are a bit rough quality though - I had one where the pages fell out after only a single reading :(

    Which is your favorite of the books?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 5 lety +1

      Ah, excellent - but impossible - question! This series has some of my favourite illustrators (particularly Charles van Sandwyk, Natee Puttapipat, Kate Baylay, Tomislav Tomič .. actually I could probably just list them all...), but the selection of tales is also important. Blue and red are classically stunning and have a lot of the more familiar tales, olive and lilac are beautiful and have some more interesting, less familiar tales... Do you have a favourite???

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 3 lety

      Yes, they are crazy prices right now. Some of the colors are much cheaper than others 2nd hand and if you are patient you can get them at a reasonable price (e.g. blue, red), but the later ones in the series are seriously hard to find at all, let alone cheaply... Hopefully FS will reprint them again (they did bring blue back this year) so that everyone can enjoy them!

    Do you sell your collection?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 5 lety +1

      Are you looking to buy this set, or were you just interested in general? I buy books for myself, not usually to on-sell (but I do occasionally sell if I'm offered a great price so that I can buy new books, ha - but this particular set is in Australia with me - can you imagine the shipping costs for a set like this? *shudders*).
      If you are interested in buying this set of fairy books, the description box under the video has links to all the books so you can get an idea of what they are worth. Some are still available from FS direct (e.g. Red Fairy Book), some are very cheap to find second hand (e.g. Blue), and some are very rare and very hard to find (e.g. Olive) and are consequently ridiculously expensive. FS might reprint some day though!

      Aw, what a lovely gift!!! Good luck in your hunt - it is a bit hard to find a full set at the moment (and the ones I've seen have been selling for $3000+), but as I said, there is always a chance that it will be reprinted by FS. Or if he's still young, you have time to build up the collection for him slowly - some of my sets took 10+ years to build, but I probably treasure them the most :)
