I think it was Venom all the way. Either that, or Venom is nothing more than a split personality of Big Boss caused by the physical and mental trauma. But yea I can't wait to see more 🍻

I love one detail of what Ocelot tells Venom Snake ,and its that he doesn't tell Venom that he'll tell him the truth, or even that he'll fill him in on what he missed on during his coma , instead he says the conveniently vague sentence:" All i can do is tell you the facts as they were told to me" , which is a sentece believable enough so that Venom and the player trusts him on whatever lie he needs him to believe ,but also leads venom , and us to realize that what Ocelot tells us may be a version of the truth ,or as he puts it ,the facts as they were told to him.

Maybe whole game is just an imagination during coma like Driver San Francisco. I see it now its really like movie Source Code. After MG2, Big Boss's deformed body was put in coma and Patriots put him in virtual simulation based on his memories, but Big Boss beat it and created his own imaginary world where he's become hero, find love and little happiness, then during MGS4 he was freed. In GZ, in mission Deja Vu we see one strange glitch when text with Fox Alive appeared. I think its that exact moment during simulation when Sunny in MGS4 upload her virus.

I've always thought something similar to the "VR after MG2" part of your post. What Kojima seems to have been going for, to have intended, was basically for MGSV to be about an extremely mentally damaged (his mind fractured, trouble remembering who he is, full of guilt, regret, hate and sadness) Big Boss (likely sometime after 1999) undergoing a sort of VR "phantom pain therapy" (that mirror-based therapy where people experience a visual illusion of still having a limb that was lost) intended to keep him together mentally, and that "Venom" and "Skull Face" are just two sides of himself, two _characters_ embodying aspects of himself, that he's "imagining"; neither of them existing as individual real humans. And so, none of the events in MGSV ever happened but rather they're a sort of jumbled-together mixture of various things based on real events and real experiences in Big Boss's life over a long period of time. For example in reality BB was with Sniper Wolf, a physically real human in BB's real life; in the "phantom pain therapy" VR, his memory of SW manifested as a sniper and a wolf. And the children in Zanzibar and Outer Heaven (there were children there too) who BB coldly "saved" - quote: _"start a war, create victims, save them, train them, feed them back to the battlefield"_ - are manifested in his VR therapy as the children BB heroically rescues as his Venom persona (a character "created" by the comatosed BB within the VR, to _house_ the side of himself that's mostly good - Skull Face being his darker emotions and negative aspects of himself; SF is "evil" as he's the stuff in himself he dislikes, stuff he in his fractured mind sees himself as being in opposition against), both re-creating that _experience_ from his life and also dealing with the related guilt; in his VR being kinder and telling himself he's really helping them. So the "VR therapy" isn't a pre-written story or mission made by someone that BB is "playing", but rather it's something he himself created. He didn't make the VR software nor placed himself in the VR, but rather _what happens within the VR_ is his own creation. Similarly to what Otacon says about how AI can work within their universe: _"The Colonel is in part your own creation, cobbled together from expectations and experience."_ - the VR therapy is created/generated by BB in a similar manner; he, his memories and experiences - a lot of which we've _never seen_ as it was never in a game - are the source, what the VR content is based on. But Kojima was forced to "finish" MGSV too early and hence had to change the story, had to wrap the story up too early, so it was changed into what it became; into what we have now; Venom actually being real, SF actually being real, Venom actually being the Medic, all that nonsense, and the events in the MGSV story actually having happened (and let's be realistic: while Kojima has never said _"Yeah SF and Venom are real and you really do play the Medic"_ etc, that _is_ what the story was ultimately made into, it's what we're meant to think, and it _is_ what the vast majority of people think, and Kojima said about remaking MG and MG2 that their stories need to be "fixed" due to MGSV which of course must mean changing them to fit with MGSV, meaning, among other things, inserting Venom into them. So we can give up any hope Kojima will ever confirm what the MGSV story was intended to be, something he'd never do anyway - not even if the majority of players were questioning the story and thinking it's not real etc, which they don't; the vast majority take MGSV at face value and think the characters and events are real).
That, essentially, has always seemed like the most logical and most obvious reasons why MGSV is like it is. With the above in mind, MGSV makes sense. However while looking at MGSV this way brings clarity, it doesn't make MGSV any better nor is understanding the above particularly satisfying. More like the opposite; it's more sad and disappointing than anything else. Due to that, it's of course a "take" on MGSV which would upset many who think MGSV is truly finished (as intended) because Kojima is a perfect mastermind whose games are flawless and thus there can't be anything important missing or fundamentally wrong with MGSV and who wishfully believe there's some great secret to uncover which would fix MGSV by making everything perfectly fall into place, or people who _want more_ from MGSV and wish there was a way to get more out of the story. Which is probably why it's exceptionally rare to see what I wrote, to see this specific "take", mentioned online (actually have never seen it; have seen some stuff vaguely similar, and just once or twice something _pretty_ similar - Big Boss being in a sort of VR therapy - but then it was missing the _"this was the intention, but later the story was changed"_ aspect). Because it's boring and can't be used as some "fun theory", as it means MGSV is hopelessly broken since it isn't what it was meant to be and never will become what it was meant to be; knowing/understanding the above stuff means knowing there's no more story to uncover, no grand realization to come to, no special Kojima-approved "interpretation" to figure out that fits perfectly with MGSV as it is. Most people who question MGSV try to make sense of it in a way that "saves" the game and makes it better. Many try hard to invent all sorts of theories to fix the broken tangled mediocre mess of MGSV and straighten it out into something neatly ordered and amazing - an impossible task; nobody has and nobody will succeed in doing so, as MGSV is both something _it was_ and something _it became_ simultaneously. Should clarify and underscore what I wrote above is simply _what I got_ from MGSV; it seemed fairly obvious _that_ - in essence - was Kojima's intention but he couldn't fully realize it; ultimately the story had to change. So I want to be clear it's not some "theory" I invented or even some "solution" I thought up for the sake of "solving" MGSV. It's simply what I got from the game, simply my impression. Like I said I've never seen anyone say exactly what I wrote above, however I'm absolutely sure many other players must've gotten the same or a very similar impression, reached the same or a very similar conclusion.
Regarding SF having been intended to be (an aspect of) BB, a few things are worth mentioning. First some rarely mentioned things.
Skull Face talks about making weapons in a factory and being burned as a result of planes bombing the factory. Big Boss's factory of Outer Heaven was making weapons of mass destruction - Metal Gear and nukes - and NATO planes bombed the place. Black Ninja in MG2 says: _"After you destroyed Metal Gear, NATO launched a massive bombing campaign against Outer Heaven. There was no escape from the flames... All of us, and the children of Outer Heaven... died like animals in a cage."_ and Skull Face says: _"The factory was all I had. All the world I knew. Then one day, aircraft came droning in from some far-off sky. The factory was bombed. Some spies told them we were making weapons. The building burned. We tried to flee outside. The exit was blocked. The smoke of the people burning filled me up. Hot. So hot. My skin would never feel anything again. This face would be burned again... Those spies reported well - we made weapons all right."_ and regarding "burned again"; Solid burns him with a makeshift flamethrower in MG2.
That Skull Face is wearing a masquerade mask implies he isn't who he appears to be on the surface, that his identity is _masked,_ unknown, hidden. Giving Skull Face's design a mask was very likely inspired by Snatcher.
If you haven't played it, don't read any Snatcher articles nor watch anything as it's super easy to get devastatingly spoiled. All the fun is the story and solving the mysteries, puzzles, piecing things together in your head on your own. While it sucks having any game spoiled there's usually still the gameplay to have fun with, but there isn't much gameplay in Snatcher and Snatcher is nowhere near as fun to re-play vs experiencing it the first time. Once you know what happens, it's never even remotely the same again.
In Snatcher there are various different kinds of instances with people _not being who they seem to be_ and people _hiding their identities_ and _things not being as they seem_ and stuff like that. It's like a _recurring theme_ which manifests itself in different ways throughout the game in various ways. That in of itself is relevant to MGSV in some ways. But more importantly there is in Snatcher a place called Outer Heaven. To get into Outer Heaven _you have to wear a mask._ And the people inside Outer Heaven are all are _wearing masks, hiding their identities._ So does _the guy who runs the place._ And before you get to Outer Heaven, someone talks about the place and says among other things: _"There's a masquerade club called Outer Heaven. It's like a big masquerade party. You gotta have a mask, or they won't let you in. Outer Heaven is popular with VIP's in a lot of high places."_ - Big Boss of course is a Very Important Person in the Metal Gear series, and someone in a "high place" when leading Outer Heaven.
The little masquerade mask Skull Face wears is functionally - as a physical mask - utterly pointless and useless. So it makes no sense. However it makes perfect sense if it's there _for the player's sake_ as a sort of hint to make him wonder about the character's identity and sense the man behind the mask isn't "Skull Face" but someone else.
Something much more well-known is how in the trailer "TPP LAUNCH" at 1:35 BB is depicted with the skullface paint and at 2:20 he's shown transforming into Skull Face and in the "E3 2015" trailer SF is talking about changing _while_ BB is walking and changing, making it seem as if it's BB talking about himself.
Of course there are several other things connecting BB and SF.

MGSV is mostly finished, no matter how much someone may not like it. The prologue was planned from the beginning as an epilogue and "Truth" as the final ending. Chapter 3: Peace is just an idea, a cutscene - World Peace is achieved by dismantling all the nukes in the FOB missions, but realistically it can't be achieved and that's the point, you can't achieve world peace because there's always someone who wants to own a nuke. Only the DLC - Episode 51: Kingdom of the Flies was cancelled. Things like Battle Gear were cut for balance. Other things like Big Boss' motorcycle as a reward for completing the story are up for debate.
According to what Kojima said, MGSV is purposely designed as a never ending puzzle aka phantom pain, which each player has to interpret according to himself and each interpretation is the "truth" - canon and each player has to put a piece of himself into the game, thus making the story of whole MGS Saga - unique/different for each player and the player himself is the last piece of the whole puzzle, without which the Saga would not be complete. Kojima really created something that is only possible in games. And was his gift for every player. He literally makes us part of MGS story and its on us to complete it. Its very very hard concept too reallly understand it, but its just works.

One mystery I still want to know is the nature of Big Boss' ability or inability to detect scent, whether it was simply a clever fourth-wall break in reference to the player, or if he really cannot smell, meaning Venom's sniffing the birthday stogie was a hint.

Paz was the villain of PW bro that's why BOSS I'm GZ doesn't care about her because she's Pacifica ocean, but venom constructs the hallucination of Paz at peace because venom only really knew the fake Paz persona and didn't experience her fall firsthand

Everything in the game may or may not be real, like Skullface says in the game and it's narrative structure alludes, this is the anti metal gear metal gear game. Made to look and play exactly like one, but missing something, hence phantom pain. Game is complete.
Maybe Venon Snake really IS the real Big Boss, and he's just hallucinating and constructing a narrative that he's just a body double, which makes him descend into madness and start the events of Metal Gear 1.

He constructed this fake persona, just like Ocelot in MGS4, to lead Foxhound and Outer-Heaven at the same time. And then the phantom "die", during the events of MG1, just like Ocelot when Liquid took control of their body.

There are so many weird things on mgsv tpp without solving: the identification dating 1978, okb zero diamond dogs containers, the two ishmaels, what happens after eli escapes with sahelantropus, the allucinations of venom... There has to be a twist somewhere
wasent the truth tape given to venom by ocelot? the truth tape is located on the reverse side of the song "the man who sold the world" venome had it from the begining of the game and didnt realise until he decided to play the other side of the tape, an idea triggerd by the sound in the final cutscean, that probably being part of the brainwashing by ocelot.

The other side of that tape is not "the truth", it's the instructions for "mission intrude N313"
The biggest part of the original script (before it was altered) from what I read was the change of music.
During the Truth mission the player was supposed to be able to look behind him to the right to see the photos the doctor eventually shows you. The photos aren't covered when you observe them the music changes from Midge Ure's version of Man Who Sold the World to David Bowie's.
To this day, I maintain that there were no two snakes or body doubles. It was Naked Snake (Big Boss) losing his grip on reality due to his injuries and nine-year coma. Additionally, I believe the medic was intended to be his protégé, meant to carry on his legacy just as Big Boss did for The Boss. The loss of his "son" and the entire MSF family, along with brain injuries and a prolonged coma, took a severe toll on his mind.
This thought process would invalidate mgs4.... seeing as you kill the original big boss in it.
I like that it leaves so much open for interpretation and I could see how this version would be true. Even though I like that Venom is his own person because it still a play on Bosses will. A soldier who is not genetically a prodigy, nor is somehow enhanced takes the mantle of Big Boss and carries on his will (and his memories).
Somehow I think he even fulfilled Bosses will because he sacrificed his own life for Big Boss.

What's also interesting is that we never actually recieve the "From The Man Who Sold The World" cassette tape in-game, even though it was presented with Venom Snake playing the tape in the Diamond Dogs Era as seen with the DD emblem in the mirror in the final cutscene.
Not to mention the music/headphones were attached to victims in the hospital in Africa. A curious parallel between the radios in Cyprus and Africa. No one has ever explained why.

Awesome video! It seems like the cassette tapes represent the memories of Venom Snake, being played during his hypno state. Given that the game is experienced through memories; and starts by zooming into a cassette playing in the Walkman, then immediately kicks into the mission. It's very likely that there's misinformation tapes in there, as Ocelot mentions being able to manipulate memories.
I have a feeling this is going to be my most anticipated YT video of 2024.
Great analysis!!! In my opinion, the development team was only referring to the part of the game that involves Paz, because, if we accept as "non-existent" all the cassette tapes that are not seen being delivered to Venom, almost everything in the game does not exist or it exists as something entirely different from what we know or have seen in person in missions or walking around the map.
Taking Africa as an example, everything regarding the Angolan civil war, vocal cord parasites and Code Talker in the game would be a lie because none of the dozens of cassette tapes were physically delivered to Venom (all the cassette recordings were apparently digitized and sent to the Idroid, as Venom only listens to them after selecting them via Idroid and it wouldn't make sense to carry dozens of cassette tapes inside the backpack).
There are facts like, for example, Venom fought Sahelanthropus in Afghanistan. Quickly, we can say that Venom and Sahelanthropus exist and have characteristics that can be described by another person who knew them very well. Both were described on cassette tapes (The Truth and Sahelanthropus, respectively). However, both tapes were not seen being delivered to Venom. Assuming both tapes and their contents to be fake or hallucinations, we could only assume that Venom and Sahelanthropus exist, but no one knows who Venom is or what technologies are present in Sahelanthropus. Therefore, Venom would just be an unknown person who is certainly not the medic and Sahelanthropus is a battle machine that perhaps details were discovered after it was destroyed in the last battle before Outer Heaven was created.
Obviously, it is possible to brutally destroy my arguments when considering the other theories, masterfully explored by you and other channels, which expand the notion of reality and cite the possibility that MGS games and, consequently, MGS lore are just virtual simulations . Anyway, your analysis was incredible. Congratulations on the incredible content and thank you for keeping MGSV alive.
I would bet that the content that can be confirmed from the tapes that can be confirmed in game (Sahelanthropus, for example) is true. While what cannot be confirmed (the Peace tapes, for example, which speak of the past that cannot be visited) can be contested.
ps: of course, these are just theories.
ps2: about Sahelanthropus, the tapes that speak to him before the fight takes place talk about capabilities that he possessed, and that just from the tapes, there would be no way for a snake to know...

The only tapes I believe are real (with some discrepancies) are the music tapes Venom picks up and Intrude n313. I think Intrude N313 was Big Bosses way of giving Venom a heads up about Solid Snake and to show his respect for one of his best soldiers. Everything else could be interpreted as hallucinations or things Venom overheard at some point. As to say Venom's memories slowly came back over time and the hallucinations are part damage to his brain and part brainwashing because he is not Big Boss so the things he's supposed to remember are just brainwashing. Kinda like how reading/writing info to a damaged CD will give errors but the brain unlike fixed media can fill the gaps even if it's wrong.
At least that's a guess... It's funny how as the years go by the story feels like it becomes clearer. I remember being ticked off that we weren't actually Big Boss in the end and now, not so mad, it's a classic Kojima play really.
MGSV being as odd as it is, and as a incomplete game, really does make it quite the experience. Makes me wonder what Physint will be like.

I still remember when the MGSV5 was first released there was a blog I don't know which, that said the game was supposed to have three Chapters The Desert of Afghanistan, the Jungle of Africa, and the Snow Blizzard of Siberia, before they rushed the game and force Kojima to release the game with the two chapters. The snow chapter is the last and is the same chapter in the story of the MGS1...that's why they have the metal gear Rex ended up in MGS1 and MGSV

I have always wondered if that’s why Ocelot voice sounded and acts different in the TPP; if Venom can experience visual hallucinations maybe he experiences audible ones too. My theory on this is The Medic/Venom would already know how Huey and Miller and Paz sounds having spent so Much time around them so he can put a voice to match the face but he perhaps he never knew ocelot or even encountered and doesn’t know Ocelot or even know what he sounds like so is Venom just imagining what this voice sounds like and who Ocelot is? Perhaps this version of Ocelot is just Venoms interpretations of who this man is. If so it would make total sense of all the characters Ocelot seems so different and off from our usual perception of him...

@@brotbrotsen1100 after I wrote that comment I went back and installed MGSV. I played 8 hours in a row that day. I think what really happened is I don't like MGSV as an MGS game. It just doesn't play, look or feel the same. It's like a totally different game to me. So after hating it for what it isn't, I think this time I just played it for the game play and not the story and it was good.
How does this game keep surprising us to this day
Something happened to me last Thursday when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go - I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky, to the east! It was moving very irregularly... suddenly there was intense light all around me - and when I came to, I was home. What do you think happened to me?
Something to note with the intro quote about facts being interpretations, this quote is by a philosopher who never spoke english or had the quote translated. When translated it takes on a whole new meaning. This plays with the games theme of lies and deception.

About the Truth tapes:
We must take in consideration that the chapter 3 was not finished so Ocelot could have gave them to Snake and then explained everything to Miller (end dialogue between Kaz and Ocelot about what's to come).
I feel like the "tapes don't exist" excerpt was only meant to address the Paz tapes. Show us this script document so we can read it ourselves.

Honestly, I don't even know what to believe anymore when it comes to this series, but I believe that was Kojima's true intent. The real message I get from all this is truth is relative, it's shaped by those with the power and resources to control history. Even what we think happened in history probably didn't go down exactly as it was told. We can never truly know, and in the case of Venom Snake, he can't even trust his own memories or experiences as being totally truthful.
Another great video keep it up maybe one day we will finally get the truth on what really happened

Think the Truth tapes is the characters inner thoughts and understandings of what is going on, instead of the truth as a whole. there is always a disconnect about what you know and what you need to know, this simply emphesizes on this compartmentalisation.
I'm confused though, if this theory was true, then wouldn't we just have 0 answers in the story? If the truth of big boss/venom at the end is fake, then we just have nothing. I still think Venom = Medic turned into Big Boss through hypnosis and surgery. Because the differences between Venom and Big Boss are too many to try to say that Big Boss was Venom the whole time
We're absolutely not saying Venom is Big Boss. Venom is still a Body Double, but everything we're experiencing is being interpreted by him, a brainwashed, unreliable narrator, so everyone should keep an open mind about the "Truth" mission, and the "Truth Tapes".
Also, as we said in the video, this wasn't really a theory. We're simply showing what was written in the script - what developers had in mind behind Paz's tapes, which applies to any other magically-appearing tape.

For a game that wasn't finished, I lean more on the ending tapes being real since you technically reached the cut-off point. Especially when the cut content contained the resolution of the events of MGS5, so the devs just dumped the (completed) tapes on you since that's the only resolution you're getting.

While I love the speculation and all that it’s sad to think about how it won’t really lead to anything, no secret game will suddenly be unlocked or anything like that so we can’t confirm or deny anything and it almost makes it seem like it’s for nothing
Despite the fact that ive played tpp countless times and have hundreds of hours in it, i still wish it was a more straightforward sequel/prequel that answered more questions (than it left behind). But no use dwelling on what couldve been i guess
That's the double-edged sword Kojima always puts us through. In order to enhance the "artistic" or "thematic" value of the game, he always makes it more convoluted and less satisfying to the gamers. Just like MGS2 when we had to play as Raiden and basically had a rehashed version of Shadow Moses instead of a completely fresh plot. And just like MGS4, when we were denied the opportunity to play as *normal* Solid Snake one last time and instead got Old Snake. MGSV again does this by ending the series even MORE complicated and with MORE unanswered questions than before! Kojima just loves fucking with people's expecations... no matter the cost.

Since it's been a while since the HideoTube video went up, and you haven't remarked on it like I would have expected. Have you seen the speculation that video has caused regarding Physint? It seems strange that they would even broach the topic of Physint being Metal Gear and not use it as an opportunity to talk about what's going to be different, or why they've decided to return to a style of game Kojima was very famously sick of working on. It just seems strange to me that they would create an entirely fictitious interaction where Kojima is caught off guard by that question and even mark it with a musical sting. If it was really out of line, it should have been left out of the final edit, and if it was intentional, you would expect a better answer than "Ehh? What are you talking about?" When you add the remarks made by the MGS Delta director about "being interested in working with the original team again." It seems like whatever happened between Kojima and Konami has either resolved, or was never as contentious as it seemed, as I doubt he would have been allowed to make that statement if Konami were not open to the idea themselves.

Ever since my first playthrough, I thought some of the tapes were strange because it's not clear who would have recorded them or why. The Truth tapes for certain, or even the one of Skull Face and Code Talker for example. I'd suspected some of these were originally cinematics that were cut due to the troubled production, but having them be completely imaginary would be an interesting twist.

As interesting as it sounds, if the build up for all those false truths wasn´t so incredible complex, i would think that it might be a bit of lazy writing. It feels a bit like MGS4 or MGRs "Nanomachines Son", a easy explanation for weird stuff.

IF after 9 years after release the game would get a patch with additional content (maybe chpt. 3), this would be something "you only can experience in a videogame". Kojima said something like this in an interview. ;)
