I finally joined today as a member. Honestly, the best, most succinct advice and information in 3 years of searching! And I love the calling out of the pre-adolescent behavior of the "sad hams" They were making me sick of the radio genre. This pulled me back! Got my GMRS license -- ready to go!

Just finally ordered this radio with the stubby smiley antenna, jumper cable and mic so I can set it up for vehicle use or HT use. The notarubicon code still works. Took off $13 and some change. Very excited to receive it. Looking forward to listening to the emergency vehicles that drive past my house all the time. Also, now I can give my daughter my Baofeng UV9G so her and my son don't fight over his.

True dual receive! Nice. Don't underestimate being able to receive Walmart! That kind of thing is great for finding the shortest line around Christmas. I've caught lines before they even opened. It's also fun to listen to Burger King well you wait in line some days. They have hilarious conversations when they aren't busy.

Thank you for the great videos and commentaries on all the products you review. I was so intrigued by this video of the new and improved Wouxun KG-UV9GX that I purchased 2 of these radios. Though they are currently 15+ weeks backlogged I am eagerly awaiting their arrival. Both my wife and myself are licensed in both GMRS and HAM radio as each radio designation has a seperate role in our lives. I enjoy the GMRS with its ease of operation and product availability as the HAM devices can get quite costly very quickly. Thanks for helping me through the GRMS quagmire to find this particular radio. Until finding your channel I thought all GSMR radios were pretty basic and under $35. I ordered several of the UV9GX and some accessories using your link and the discount code still works. The savings more than offset the reasonable shipping charges. Of course they are on backorder yet I shall remain strong and am equal to the task (of waiting) because Better Safe Radio is a small USA-based business. I would bet they are really nice folks too. @NotaRubicon Productions well thanks to you I learned alot about hams in the last 3 weeks. A whole lot about Baufengs. My local club charges $15.00 to take the test, which I just got my ticket tonight and they give you a free UV-5R upon completing the test. No sad hams here. Just wanted to say thanks for educating me and ive been studying for the general test and am passing the current question pool at 100% pass on the last 30 test i've taken. will be testing for general within the week.

Great radio. Great review. The powerful 5.5W output will provide many fars of transmitting pleasure. It will also listen to two frequencies at the same time, a feature it shares with lower power and cheap Chinese models so often seen on CZcams channels. I only wish I could afford this SHTF wonder. The amber screen so reminds me of my old Zorba CP/M computer I had back in the 80s. It had a small green screen, but the newer one had a larger amber one for fifteen dollars extra. It brings back so many memories. My Zorba could read Kaypro, Osborne, Televideo and other formats. Now they're putting the displays in radios! Sheesh. Sixty-nine miles. Incredible!

Sweet video man. Love all the HT's in the background. I love my UV9G but this one has some extra features like red letters for night use among others. I might have to buy another one. Seems like Wouxun has caught the US market by storm and Kenwood and the others has not.

Hi Randy. Thanks for all that you do for the GMRS Community. You're a real Treasure. I purchsed an Wouxun KG-UV9G from Mark, when it first came out. Had to wait my turn to ultimately get the radio, but love it since having received it. I'm not sure I understand the subtle (or not so subtle) differences between the original KG-UV9G and the X version. Any way of listing them ? If not, no worries. Thanks so much for your help. I like the form factor of the unit. Some models do not fit nicely into a radio pouch such as those that can attach via MOLLE/PALS. My two current GMRS units are aging. I found this channel searching for this very topic. Great content. Subscribed!

Okay, I am patiently waiting for my backorder. Today. I spent two hours applying for my GRMS License. I eventually managed to pay,but I am not sure I signed the form. I guess I will hear back in a day or two. My daughter doesn't believe I put my name on a Government list. I love all the videos that called it a ten minute process.

Just ordered mine. Looks like a great tool to have for me, I work on an airfield so the AM VHF frequencies can be handy to listen in on while still having GMRS on hand as well. This is going to be my first non-baofeng radio, so I will have a lot to learn. It says estimated shipping is 6-10 weeks. Are they holding to those numbers well to your knowledge?

Wouxun 9 series of HT radios (KG-UV9G/T/D/P) seem to all be very similar in firmware design, however their manuals do not describe the menu options very well (compared to a BTECH manual, for instance). I wish there was more resources out there (youtube videos or web documents) that walk through some better descriptions of these radio features.
For instance, one of the first menu options is powersave mode, that is described as the receiver duty cycle 100ms .... How about some explanation about what is actually going on with the receiver and how these different modes affect practical usage? The manuals explain very little about many features.

Yes, you can program pretty much everything from the keypad. Not positive about the 8 repeater channels.. Everything from Ch30 up to 999 can be customized.

I have one of these Ocean (Wooksun) radios on order. I plan on having it shipped to me via Europe making it the rare Atlantic Ocean version rather than the typical Pacific Ocean one coming directly from China. And BTW, I'm betting it's been pointed out, but you should acknowledge that "Junk" is also an "industry standard term" like Midland pointed out about "privacy codes". Only the most sophisticated "operators" use those terms.
Just received mine and it does sound really good. Very impressed. I haven't seen and haven't been able to find the list of all the frequencies that are pre-programmed into it though. Any suggestions on where I would find a printed or downloadable list. Want to be able to keep the frequencies I want and leave the other slots open for other future programming. They give great customer service.

If my KG-935G dies, that I bought on your recommendation, then this would be a the next one. Unfortunately 2 HT and 1 mobile GMRS more than covers my needs.
Great review of what appears to be a great SHTF radio. But the question I always ask when contemplating a new radio: "Is it CHIRP supported?" No? No sale...
better yet is it NotaRubicon certified?

@Randy. Have you tried the TID Bluetooth dongle to enable multi-band TX on this radio? I have found most GMRS multi-band “RX only” radios can also TX on multi-band if programmed with the dongle. If this works with the X model, it may be the best value SHTF radio available.

Hello Randy, when I was a kid I was hooked on bearcat scanners. Now I’m 70 and have been watching all your Gmrs CZcams videos. I just ordered the KG-uv9gx from BSR. It’s back ordered for months. Could you recommend an outdoor antenna that would be good for the Gmrs and also listening to the other seven bands. Thanks very much.
My first radio was a Wouxun radio that I got from Ham Radio Outlet. Was never impressed with the radio and the battery was an absolute joke which is what I hated most about it. Seems like they have picked up their game though, I've just learned to stay way from them. Radio looks really good and like the fact that is wide banded.
After using commercial gear you get spoiled... Love my XTS5000 UHF III :)

This radio and its predecessor (Pro) appears to be great option if you want a bit of scanning ability and a GMRS/FRS radio for transmit capability. What do you think of the SDS100 as a scanner and is there any radio that rivals it for its scanning ability that also includes transmit capability? Take it easy on me. I’m a newb.
