In Turn A, there is a blink-and-you-miss-it mention that some of the space colonies were converted into generation ships and departed into deep space. Would have been an interesting story thread for a Gundam series, but it was never followed up on.

I do recall that (let's call it a soundbite). Not sure why no alternate series has ever built on it.

@@Mobilesuitk9 Has there ever been a Gundam series set outside of our solar system?
Generation ships are a great setting for sci-fi anime. Knights of Sidonia and Macross Frontier use that setting and they are awesome. Gundam probably won't use aliens as antagonists, but a story about a civil war inside a generation ship would be interesting.

@@fattiger6957 None that i know of. I vaguely recall some CZcams channel talking about some manga that might take place outside. Can't remember the video or if I just imagined it.
They might be interesting... but I'm sure Kill-em-all-Tomino would just say that they all died out somehow lol.

A cautionary tale of induced demand. Keep in mind that Malthus actually failed to predict the exponential availability of resources created by farming, and the gains of efficiency created through technology. Ironically the problem we now have is the same as Japan: birthrate collapse, created by economic instability, social alienation via stratification and the inaccessibility of required resources like housing, childcare and income that makes huge chunks of generations dissociate into their own introspective realities and choose not to have children. Again in space the issue is not access to primary resources: The lack of oxidization in space means lots of forms of highly advanced chemistry and metallurgy become absurdly cheap which is what allows the cheap manufacturing of mobile-suits in the first place.

Watching through Gundam, you kinda can get some insight into what went on behind the scenes.
UC Gundam is now seemingly forever stuck in the shadow of the OYW, Amuro and Char. Bandai/Sunrise seems to be content with that status quo. But I think things could have taken a different course if things had gone differently.
Victory Gundam is of very questionable quality and F91 is a nearly incomprehensible mess. Those were the two things that were supposed to move UC Gundam forwards and away from the OYW and its aftermath. But they were both fumbled and Bandai/Sunrise gave up on advancing UC. What we got is the alternate timelines where creators would try new things and ideas while UC became stuck revisiting the same things over and over.
I wonder what things would have been like had F91 been a full TV series (or even an extended OVA) and Victory had been good. Would there even be the alternate timelines? Would UC Gundam not be such a miserable timeline where the same horrors are repeated, Zeon remnants never go away and the Federation becomes more oppressive to fight those remnants?

Turn A was Tomino basically admitting that humanity in UC Gundam was never going to come to their senses. Kinda makes the whole timeline even more depressing.
