  • Gundam has been around forty years, and there is a lot of it. This video is the first in a series where I discuss each Gundam timeline, and which series would make good starting points for newcomers. I begin here with the original Gundam timeline: the Universal Century. Zakus, Zeon, Newtypes, and Drama!
    Footage taken from:
    Mobile Suit Gundam
    Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
    Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
    Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
    Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
    Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative
    Mobile Suit Gundam F91
    Mobile Suit Gundam Victory
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
    Mobile Suit Gundam IGLOO
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Skies
    Mobile Fighter G Gundam
    New Mobile Report Gundam Wing
    After War Gundam X

Iron Blooded Orphans was my first Gundam series, and I still think it's pretty good after seeing most of the entire gundam franchise. My favorite UC series is either War in the pocket, Zeta, or ZZ. The best place to start imho would War in the Pocket, since it encapsulates the love of Machines, the grossness of politics, and the tragedy and duality of war that Gundam is known for.

I didn't like the mech designs (too toyetic for my tastes), the characters suck (minus duo because he was a goofy super spy), the story was poorly written, the choreography sucked (why is the Wing Gundam's special attack just it firing lasers and spinning slowly? is heero a nintendo boss enemy, or does he just like wasting ammo and firing indiscriminately?), and the animation was somehow worse than Zeta gundam which came before it. The best way to watch the UC timeline:
    - 0079 MS Gundam
    - The 08th MS Team
    -0080 War in the Pocket
    -0083 Stardust Memory
    -Zeta Gundam
    -Double Zeta
    -Char's Counterattack
    -Unicorn
    -Gundam F91

Morgan Colby assuming you haven’t seen any of the UC timeline you have two options. 1) You could watch it after unicorn, which is what I recommend as you’ll understand references and nuances of the series which could be lost if you’re unfamiliar with characters/plot in the “main” line (0079, zeta, double zeta, cca, unicorn). Or 2) you could watch it first as it sets up the entire plot of the series going forward as it all takes place before 0079. I don’t believe ms origin is supposed to be a series to watch first, though.

0079's movies are also my recommendation for newcomers, but the movies' pacing and much less subtle approach to the core themes of the show play against them.

ZZ is a lot of fun and does have a lot of important stuff happen in it, it and sentinel are the entries where MS get absolutely massive which makes great spectacle. Funny, some people dismiss the Moon Moon arc as filler even though it has importance later in the timeline (MOON and as i discovered last night, Crossbone Dust). Some say it has too much levity and humor, personally, I think it both makes a good break from the ultra depression of Zeta and makes a brilliant contrast when things DO get serious in ZZ at the half way mark, like kids discovering how dangerous the world really is.

First gundam I have watched and completed is Zeta gundam. Although my first to watch was wing and thought it felt less compelling than Evangelion. But due to the game GvZG's release I became invested to the lore of Zeta Gundam and pretty much backtracked the story for Amuro's side and was pissed off that Ramba Ral died when supposedly in the game, a what if timeline exists where he reaches gryps war era. Of course the release of Char's backstory in origin was great and the spin-offs aforementioned in your video were the icing of UC pre- unicorn.
I have always considered Unicorn some sort of timeline splitter and not part of the F91 history due to its space magic time travelling shenanigans and considered it as a separate possibility in the UC timeline continuing into G-Recongista while Victory ending up to become Turn A.

Obviously, being a 22 year old anime nerd, I haven't been around long enough to have experienced Gundam since its inception, but sometimes I forget how long I HAVE been watching Gundam shows and partaking in Gundam content. If I recall correctly, my first Gundam show was actually The 08th MS Team. To this day I still hold this as one of the easiest entry points to the series, maybe not from a chronological standpoint, but definitely from a storytelling standpoint since it's really got something for everybody. Action, intrigue, politics, grit, romance, and plenty of mobile suit designs and variations all rolled up into a nice package that's well paced. Not too short, not too long. For someone looking for something more chronological for an entry point into Gundam, I would highly recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin as the place to start. It's beautifully animated and has a great store that shows the rise of Zeon, and more specifically the Zabi family, to power through the corruption of the Earth Federation and the discontented state of many space colonies. Excellent show, and minus a few retconned elements from the original series, it pretty much leads right up into the events of Mobile Suit Gundam. If you're just a mecha junky and are there more for the giant robot fights then I'd recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans or Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt as obvious choices.

I started with Gundam the origin and I loved it. It's very politic based which some people might not like but 8t was a VERY good interesting story and it made me think (at first) that the Zeon forces were the good guys seeking freedom but then I got confused but later it made sense to me that both sides are doing what they think is right (but the Zeon forces do some acts that make them feel like the bad guys). That made it much more interesting to me since both sides have a clear motive that seems good. You can choose whichever side you think is more good in their cause.
I also watched War In the Pocket and that was also VERY good.

War in the pocket was the second Serious Real Gundam I watched And It got me hooked on watching more of the universal century timeline. Right after watched the first two compilation movies and it was a bit underwhelming It had plenty of good moments but it felt like that any angst or character development is very basic and barley there though it may because I watched the first movie in it's dub. Next was Char's counterattack which I Absolutely love the animation the fights the main conflict all of it.

  • @AegisKHAOS
    @AegisKHAOS Před 3 lety

My first UC series I watched and first Gundam series in general was 0080 in Canto dub. It is more child-like in presentation, which is intentional given the main character is a child, yet it got its message across in its depiction of war. After that is 8th MS Team, the movie compilation of the OG MS Gundam, Char's Counterattack, 0083, Zeta, and Unicorn. Have to say, the trilogy compilation of MS Gundam was well made. Did not feel like a compilation at all compared to other movie compilations like the original Starship Yamato. Unlike the AUs, the UC timeline in general is harder for me to simply outright say I like since, being the main timeline, it is the most expanded upon. With it comes a whole bunch of hits or misses given the different writing involved. Generally speaking I do enjoy the self contained sidestories a little more than the so-called 'main' series in the timeline. While I did in the past find it annoying the constant revisiting of the One Year War period, I do find the likes of 0080, 0083, and 8th MS Team to just stand out more.
Though I have yet to watch it, I do kind of want to watch the Zeta movies. Not just for the new animation, but mainly because of Gackt. :P

Like many in America, Gundam Wing was my first series but the UC is my favorite timeline. If people want to get into it I HIGHLY recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. It sets the stage for everything, The Zabi family founding of Zeon, Casval's transformation into Char, the creation of mobile suits, and the start of the One Year War. After that I recommend the three film version of Mobile Suit Gundam, 8th MS Team, 0080: War in the Pocket, 0083: Stardust Memory, and Char's Counter Attack. Not that high on Zeta and ZZ IMO.
