God bless Horslips, these guys came up north and played an amazing gig in Belfast in 1974, during the troubles, when very few bands would come to play for us. They played at Queens Whitla Hall and united music lovers across the sectarian divide, bless 'em!
What a great song and band. Im from Spain and its a shame that these guys are almost unknown over here. Irish music is great. Forget about U2, this is the real deal.
Yes did it too for me, there is a Lot of folk metal, Rhapsody, Ensiferum, Bathory, Helloween and Wintersun come to my mind. But yeah this mix is very interesting, love the song.
"An equally illustrious character from the early Irish myths is Nuadu of the Silver Arm, King of the Tuatha Dé Danann, whose arm was chopped off in the first battle of Moytura. He had a new silver arm made for him by the Tuatha Dé Danann healer, Dian Cecht. Thus he was able to take part in the second battle of Moytura (Mag Tuired) in which the Dananns were victorious against the Fomorians." Notice Charles' right hand during this song!!!!
I grew up in Ireland in the 70s and early 80s. These guys were fantastic. Went to see them many times. I tour with an American country artist now and find many of my guitar leads are inspired by the old Celtic melodies that were drilled into my head by the Horslips. Thank you Horslips!!!
Greetings Friends! We are on a Celtic Rock Quest and we always play a Horslips song at our shows and hail Horslips as the Kings of Celtic Rock! Amazing most Americans missed out on one of the greatest rock bands of the 70's!
I remember first hearing this band while living in Cork in 1975. As a "yank" (albeit an Irish-American one), I had never heard anything like it and was instantly a fan. The music was just so different -and yet somehow paradoxically timeless and unique. There will truly never be another band like it.
This is what I loved about them. Traditional Irish music and rock are a great combination. The only other band I can think of, that did this as well, were Strawbs, with their folk and traditional music and their prog rock. Both amazing!!!!! bands.
the lead riff compares with moores' whiskey in the jar, claptons layla, g&r sweet child, anything by santana, tommy emmanuele, etc etc. Truly an awseome band who rarely get the credit they deserve
Who doesn't give them credit? I am an American, and granted, I had not heard of them until Man Who Built America came out, but we have been listening ever since.
Don't agree. We lapped this up in the 70's. Proud of our new home-grown genre of rock when Allman Bros were inventing Southern Rock, we had Mushroom and Horslips and others I can't remember.
This was my introduction to Irish music, in 1974? I was taping a college station. When the show was done, an Irish/ British Isles show started. Except for Fairport, I had no idea who the bands were. But I never forgot this song! Or the others. But there is something magical about this song! 6 years later I was playing Old Time music. And some Irish. And I finally found someone who knew the band's name! So I got that, and very little money for 5 years of touring...
I landed here after hearing a version of this song by the band Slough Feg that Spotify recommended me. I noticed that it was a cover only after I searched for it and saw this video as the first result.
My first concert as a 14 year old in the Lilac Ballroom in Carndonagh, have seen Queen live twice with Freddie and Springsteen a few times….these boys are up there with them as far as memories go…cost me a small fortune in live concerts…but wouldn’t swap a minute….thanks lads….❤️
me too!!! the best band ever. Lots of teenage memories of live gigs in Belfast, my Poly years, in Dundalk and we all hitched to Donegal to see them in Ballybofey! Legends!! I was also at the reunion concert some years back, right under the stage. Still fabulous!!❤
Amazing night in the Odyssey. First time for me...great to see me older bros and thier mates reliving those glory days of the Butt and Astoria. 'Ghosts' was really moving too. Lets hope we see more of Horslips.
Celtic Rock is the most underrated genre of music ever, and the Horslips are the most uderated band ever! U2 are good they're just overplayed, Thin Lizzy are the greatest irish band of all time but when they started to get very very popular phyl lynett died. So much for the luck of the irish!
When Guns and Roses first got airplay in the UK I always thought of The Horslips. Those jigs and reels transposed to a rock combo can't go wrong. Heavy folk rock, for want of a better term has some great layering of hooks going on.
I would bet money Alex Lifeson from Rush got the idea for the riff from The Spirit of Radio from this. And I mean this as a compliment in both directions.
@jimbronxny Dearg Doom is a reference to Cú Chulainn. He was a major character in what's known as the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He is in essence an Irish Achilles. You'll find a list of texts if you go to the "Ulster Cycle" page of wikipedia and go to the Online Translations subsection for links. Type "celt ucc published" into google, this will bring you to the Corpus of Electronic Texts at UCC, which is a great resource. Find yourself the Book of Leinster or the Táin Bó Cúalnge.
I've only recently discovered Horslips (about two years now and I bought a vinyl copy og The Tain after hearing this) and it reminds me of my favourite ever band Thin Lizzy
I didn't realise when Slough Feg covered this song that it was actually a cover, but the influence that this band had on Scalzi is extremely apparent. What a great tune
BEST IRISH ROCK GROUP BY FAR INFLUENCED OTHER IRISH ROCK BANDS WHO CAME AFTER THEM . HORSLIPS THIN LIZZY RORY GALLAGHER BRUSH SHIELDS AND VAN MORRISON, WHERE THE PIONEERS OF ROCK MUSIC IN THE 1970s AND PLANXTY PLAYED THERE PART TO 🎸🎸
Will never forget seeing Horslips in the Albert Thomson Memorial Hall of Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh (now part of the Sheriff Court) in '74 when they to played to an audience of about 20. They still played a blinding set and have always had my respect since then.
I use to hear their music every summer when i use to go to Ireland on holidays about 100 years ago.... Fantastic posting defo Blast from my Past.... i owned a LP of theirs Tracks from the Vaults cracking song on it called Motorway Madness..Would love to hear that again....Sadly LP lost somewhere in my time-line....
RIP Johnny Fean. Such a legendary guitarist, and fantastic ambassador to musical talent from here in Ireland!
Sad to hear this news. A truly great player
Wait he died??
Always sad to hear a man or lady passed
God bless Horslips, these guys came up north and played an amazing gig in Belfast in 1974, during the troubles, when very few bands would come to play for us. They played at Queens Whitla Hall and united music lovers across the sectarian divide, bless 'em!
Well said, Alan. Though I didn’t witness that particular gig, I count the one I did see as one of the best live performances I ever attended.
Alan Morgan super 🇮🇪🇬🇧🥂👍
Alan Morgan..Horslips and Rory Gallagher, never let their fans down..
Yes and Rory Galagher
…and of course, dear Rory Gallagher and his magnificent sidemen. He didn’t disappear for six years.
Two wonderful bands. 🎸🎸
Only an Irish band could have Uilleann pipes and an electric mandolin on stage! Massive legends!
What a great song and band. Im from Spain and its a shame that these guys are almost unknown over here. Irish music is great. Forget about U2, this is the real deal.
U2 are fans of Horslips.
Horslips proved that you could mix rock history mythology and folk. Nobody else has come close.
Yes did it too for me, there is a Lot of folk metal, Rhapsody, Ensiferum, Bathory, Helloween and Wintersun come to my mind.
But yeah this mix is very interesting, love the song.
Was lucky enough to see them in concert four times growing up in the Seventies. What a band! R.I.P. the marvellous Johnny Fean.
The silver hand of the singer. Awesome.
RIP Johnny Fean and thanks for that awesome guitar riff.
Dear God I'm old, but still alive to appreciate good music, thank you Horslips111111
Dieses Lied habe ich 50 Jahre gesucht
Endlich
So ein klasse Song
Mein Bruder sagte von horslips
Danke und Ruhe in Frieden
Ich freuhe mich das du dieses Lied endlich gefunden hat.
My German isn't great.
@@barryflanagan7502
Danke
Alles Ok 🤘🏻
Ich auch!
This band, even as they still perform, are still the most underrated band to come from this island,👍👍👍

10 outta 10.

The most underrated band on the planet & unfortunately, years ahead of their time.
still ahead of this time
Sorry to hear that you underrate them that much, and also sorry that you are so alone doing that.
Greetings Friends! We are on a Celtic Rock Quest and we always play a Horslips song at our shows and hail Horslips as the Kings of Celtic Rock!
Amazing most Americans missed out on one of the greatest rock bands of the 70's!
Rest in Peace to guitarist Johnny Fean😞🖤
One the best opening guitar riffs earlier, love this song
I remember first hearing this band while living in Cork in 1975. As a "yank" (albeit an Irish-American one), I had never heard anything like it and was instantly a fan. The music was just so different -and yet somehow paradoxically timeless and unique. There will truly never be another band like it.
horslips are huge in BRAZIL
So happy I found this band. Gold. My kind of tune. ♥️
30 years old and still sounds great
Loved their mix of traditional Irish music and rock brilliant!
This is what I loved about them. Traditional Irish music and rock are a great combination. The only other band I can think of, that did this as well, were Strawbs, with their folk and traditional music and their prog rock. Both amazing!!!!! bands.
Only the Irish give a fallen rocker commendations from the cultural minister. Awesome😊
Barry Devilin is such a under rated bass player! Just listen to him hes pure class!!!
I tried to learn the bass part for Dearg Doom - way above my pay grade!!
the lead riff compares with moores' whiskey in the jar, claptons layla, g&r sweet child, anything by santana, tommy emmanuele, etc etc. Truly an awseome band who rarely get the credit they deserve
Who doesn't give them credit? I am an American, and granted, I had not heard of them until Man Who Built America came out, but we have been listening ever since.
I've been raised a protestant, and yet I love Horslips, they're amazing.
I was raised a catholic and I love van the man don't see what religion has to do with music
Sadly a very underrated rock band
andrew arthur matthews The musicians are good for sure, and the singer's not that bad sometimes
No, they are recognised as GREAT. U2's Bono mentions them as their main influence in a doco. HORSLIPS!!!
But highly respected
what another pointless comment you people make about bands, etc that really ARE rated and respected
Don't agree. We lapped this up in the 70's. Proud of our new home-grown genre of rock when Allman Bros were inventing Southern Rock, we had Mushroom and Horslips and others I can't remember.
What a legendary riff, it's been long engraved in my mind!
Put ‘em undah pressuh!
O'Neill's March
My absolute favorite band of all time. Went to see them in Monaghan all the time. Go by myself if my friends couldn’t go. Love them.
They also came to Portrush around then I was 18. Fantastic night. Also Planxty in 1973. Loved Irish music ever since.
My friend's favorite band .She followed them all her life. She has just died far too early.
I only just today discovered this song, and it’s a new favorite. These guys ROCK.
I landed here after hearing a version of this song by the band Slough Feg that Spotify recommended me. I noticed that it was a cover only after I searched for it and saw this video as the first result.
what a real rock n roll band. The theatrics out of them too... imagine anyone even near to that in Ireland today. I big them up....
whoa! I just went to the 1970's. Horslips just took me there!
What Fantastic Memories they Created
🇮🇪
Saw them in concert a few times. The crowd would go WILD when this was played. Brings back great memories!
Grew up to my parents partying late in to the evening listening to Horselips. Great memories.
Superb Band , HORSLIPS FOREVER !!!.
Most of the Horslips albums were a complete story relating to Irish mythology. Many bands adopted this style of of album making, including Rush.
Alongside the great drawings of Jim Fitzpatrick it was a great time to into all things cultural then
Without question, the best guitar riff ever!
RIP Johnny. ❤❤❤
The first vinal i ever held as a baby, still have it and its mint, and im 28 now and still listen to them.......SAVAGE BAND!!!
Got to see these guys backing up Nazareth once... I remember being impressed with the band...loud and very confident.
best band ever, seen the in culdaff and carndonagh many times and still have their autographs :)
Saw them in culdaff last night. Rocking gig. Nice guys too .
Would love to see this band. Love The Tain, but my fave album always be Happy to meet sorry to part, a classic.
This is one of the best songs of all time and definetly the best horslips song!!!!!!! I love the Horslips!!!!!!!!!
This song deserves much more views
You couldn't meet a nicer fellow than Johnny Fean, the guitarist on the GLP Black Beauty. A real gentleman and a great musician.
Simply the best 🎉🎶
Yes Still the GREATEST!!! Thanks
Jayzus the silver painted hands! Fukin Brillo! Best ever gig in Donnybrook 1978
They were wicked at da Sligo concerts bank holiday 1971
This is Gaelic Glam Rock of the 1970's which puts Ireland on a Folklore Rock stage in a very Glastonbury sort of way
note his silver hand. from the legend of Nuada, who lost his hand fighting the formorians.
legendary music
Best gig of my life these guys at the O2.... Blew my mind... And what a mandolin solo during Furniture!!!
brilliant band i still have all their autographs from when i was 15.
grand stuff Martina
Nice!
quite possibly one of the best top irish songs of all time, defo in the top five
I’m Haitian and I like this song
easily one of the best riffs.
timeless!!!!!! since I was a teenager!
me too!!! the best band ever. Lots of teenage memories of live gigs in Belfast, my Poly years, in Dundalk and we all hitched to Donegal to see them in Ballybofey! Legends!! I was also at the reunion concert some years back, right under the stage. Still fabulous!!❤

"The greatest Irish song of all time" -- no lie there.
✨🇮🇪👍
We used to drive up to the Hellfire Club in da mountains after a session with this on full blast in 78. Lucky us we never saw da devil!
The actual song is "O' Neill's Cavalry March", thumbs up.
Celtic Rock is the most underrated genre of music ever, and the Horslips are the most uderated band ever! U2 are good they're just overplayed, Thin Lizzy are the greatest irish band of all time but when they started to get very very popular phyl lynett died. So much for the luck of the irish!

RIP Johnny Fean💚
That riff is brilliantly infectious!
Very good! Heavy rock, audibly Irish like early Lizzy. Terrific.
How did these not make it Huge ? Great band
What a fantastic band!!!
"By all accounts Johnny Fean just wanted to play..." I love this band.
Love this song ~ It's simply FAB...!!!!!
It is, we studied it on the junior cert in my year, as part of fusion music. Still remember it because it's awesome.
I would bet money Alex Lifeson from Rush got the idea for the riff from The Spirit of Radio from this. And I mean this as a compliment in both directions.

Cannot stop listening to this track.
R.i.p. Johnny fean
Saw them 5 (?) years ago in Cropredy. Lot less beard and way more fun. Played a fine concert, as expected. Well done Horslips!
Oh, how I treasure my old VINYL copy of THE TAIN!!! Great track. Wonderful clip!
Ahh the memories, I will never tire of that song!
I've only recently discovered Horslips (about two years now and I bought a vinyl copy og The Tain after hearing this) and it reminds me of my favourite ever band Thin Lizzy

Love this song.
It doesn't get any better.
Just how good is this? For guitar riffs it is up there with Smoke on the Water and God knows what else. Brilliant song.
BEST IRISH ROCK GROUP BY FAR INFLUENCED OTHER IRISH ROCK BANDS WHO CAME AFTER THEM . HORSLIPS THIN LIZZY RORY GALLAGHER BRUSH SHIELDS AND VAN MORRISON, WHERE THE PIONEERS OF ROCK MUSIC IN THE 1970s AND PLANXTY PLAYED THERE PART TO 🎸🎸
I saw Hoeslips in 2011 at the London Feis. They stole the show.I was very proud to be from the same county as Barry Devlin. He was outstanding.
The best band that came out of Ireland. Without them, there would be no U2.
A great band and song -- and maybe the best adaptation of a trad tune for a rock lick (O'Neill's March)
Saw them at York College in the mid 70s. Good live band.
Fantastic! Thanks for uploading...the first song I ever heard and loved (I was 3 years old!)
I was studying architecture in Bolton Street when this came out .......... where did I go WRONG !!!!!!!
The Godfathers of Rock, how many bands would admit they were influenced by them. put U2 to shame
I don't fully agree about the U2 part but yeah
Bono admitted they were a major influence. Ha! Only?!?!
No, don't think so.
Thin Lizzy & Horslips over U2 any day
Will never forget seeing Horslips in the Albert Thomson Memorial Hall of Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh (now part of the Sheriff Court) in '74 when they to played to an audience of about 20. They still played a blinding set and have always had my respect since then.
The lord weird slough feg definitly took influence from this. Thank god for inspiration! Great trippy 70s just the way i like it!
Classic. Respect. ❤
