  • John Peel's favourite ever song and not hard to understand why. Timeless teenage frustration in 2 and a half minutes of raucous pop punk heaven. Play it loud and feel free to pogo -- you know you want to.

    Something like 4 years ago, i met an Irish customer at my work place in South Italy (i'm Italian). He said he was from Derry, and i said "oh, there's a great band in your city, The Undertones, i love them". He was SO happy and surprised to see an Undertones fan in a remote city in South Italy, we talked in broken English about bands and music for almost an hour. One of my best memories.

It captures the feelings of longing, desire, and energy that come with being a teenager. The song is a celebration of innocent teenage love and the emotions associated with it. Don't feel bad sugarkane! The boys are actually doing a great job here considering how very young and very inexperienced they were and how videos were still a very new concept. They didn't grow up doing dance classes, and endless training, etc like Justin or Britney, etc. They were raw talent. Kurt Cobain grew up watching MTV, and he said he felt like an absolute idiot during the filming of the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. I grew up in the MTV era, and there were a he!! of a lot of professional, experienced bands with film directors making their videos, and the bands looked utterly ridiculous. The boys actually do a great job here considering how all of this was new to them and to the culture more generally. If you want to see some truly embarrassing "performances" watch some of the early Top of the Pops performances (mainly in the 70s but also the early 80s -- before bands got used to the "video" concept and faking a performance -- lip sync/fake-guitar playing, etc). Of course bands were doing this from the 60s but telly exposure exploded in the 70s and 80s The Undertones were doing this without the prep and guidance that other bands received, and it is great to watch them do it!

      I can understand what you´re saying but if you listen closer (maybe with headphones) you will notice it is actually the hi-hats. And he does go to the ride for a little short period by the end of the song. I know it´s subtle but it´s there. My best guess is that the drumsticks could be with nylon tips which helped with that sound being very similar to a ride cymbal or even just a regular but kinda heavy wood tip drumstick. I used to play this with by Tribute band and YES it is one of the greatest songs ever!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

    • @markpatrick8188
      @markpatrick8188 Před 2 lety

      @@gustavomantovani8309 Spot on w/the nylon tips. With the guitar distortion so powerful...the nylon tips make a 'click' that can easily be mistaken for a 'ping'.....and, as you said, he goes to the ride for a measure and that's where you can tell the difference. I made the same mistake until I repeatedly listened.

    Hard to believe this song was recorded back in 1978 !! It just sounds so fresh. No band today gets anywhere near this level of pure rebellious excitement - and the delightful spontaneity of teenage youth. I once had a discussion with the bassist (when playing with That Petrol Emotion in Manchester) about his Edie Segwick T-shirt he wore on stage - and where he got it - Camden Market btw. Lovely guy. Very approachable. Good memory.
