  • Clay bar vs Clay towel vs Clay Mitt: What is the best? In this video, you will learn everything there is to know about a clay bar, how to clay bar a car, how to use a clay bar, and what are the differences among the different auto detailing clay formats: clay bar, clay towel and clay mitt.
Typically, you rub a clay bar over each panel of your car to remove bonded contaminants such as dust, dirt, industrial fallout, brake dust, paint overspray, and tree sap. This is considered a paint decontamination step and it produces a smooth, ready-to-wax surface. Automotive clay bars are safe on clear coats as long as you use a lubricant while rubbing in back and forth motions. “Claying” is most commonly used on paint, but also works on glass, fiberglass, and metal.

What do we use after we clay the surface?

TL:DR - It's fun trying out lots of new stuff but most of us only need a couple hundred bucks of essentials.
It's easy to slide down that rabbit hole but for most of us, we only NEED a few critical things to truly produce an outstanding shine. My personal detailing tub consists of these things
      - Adams Iron Remover
      - Adams microfiber wash mitt
      - Adams Interior Detailer
      - Adams Clarybar
      - Adams microfiber cloths
      - Adams tire gloss
      - Adams Ultra plush drying towel
      - MeGuiars gold glass wash
      - Nanoskin clay lube
      - McKee's Krystal Vision glass cleaner
      - EZ detail brush for wheels
      - Home made Isopropyl Alcohol/distilled water spray for old wax/sealant stripping
      - Shine Supply Slick back (very very fine grit final polish just before applying wax/ceramic/etc)
      - Shine supply Clutch
      - Griot's garage orbital polisher
      - Griot's Finishing pad and an assortment of Cobra cross groove pads
It's all together maybe $350 worth of stuff but I've spent a LOT more over the years trying different things like the foam cannons (both hose and power washer style - foam master II that attaches to your hose works perfectly fine) although I typically don't bother with foam unless it's been a month between washing and for that, I use Chemical Guy's watermelon snow foam, I've used several different post-wash sealant sprays, tire shines, interior cleaners, etc. Paint sealant/prep sprays are another thing I've tried several of and good old alcohol and water works just as good.
I've got several friends who have a massive collection of detailing supplies and I find that what usually happens (I'm guilty of this as well) is that they buy one product and use it maybe once or twice and then buy something else to try leaving that first purchase to just sort of sit there. So instead of that, we swap products all the time and the general consensus for most of the stuff we've all bought and tried is that unless you are a professional who is extremely familiar with the intricacies of how these products work and what results you are used to seeing, it's all basically the same stuff and for a decently taken care of car, foam and clay are rarely needed and for new cars, a single pass of finishing compound is going to get you a great mirror-like surface for whatever sealant you pick and you shouldn't have to compound/polish again for at least a year if you use the 2 bucket method and go easy when washing with the mitt.
I've got ceramic on my wife's car, my Dodge Charger that I just sold only got a finishing pass with MeGuiars 105 ultra cut compound and finished with Chemical guys V07 and after every wash, I would spray the hood, roof and trunk lid with the V07 quick detailer and that was it. When I sold it, the paint still beaded water and felt slick with only minor light swirls from washing and that was it. The ceramic is awesome and I think it's absolutely worth the money but vs my Charger, I couldn't tell a significant difference when it came to ease of washing or quality of shine or anything like that.
I just got a new car on a 3 year lease after selling the Dodge and this weekend, my plan is just to wash it, spray it down with iron remover, clay, alcohol prep spray, slick back with the polisher and then throw the V07 on it and after each wash, hit it with the Clutch spray. That will easily keep it pristine until I have to turn it back in.

Good video, as usual. I used to use a clay bar, but about 9 months ago I discovered a clay mitt. Had to buy it online in Australia, haven't seen one in a shop. And I haven't used a clay bar since. Still got a brand new bar in it's box. I've just worn the mitt out and started on my second one. Just so much easier. Had to buy a container to put it in, everything sticks to it otherwise.

Pan, excellent explanations on clay media. Two years ago I clayed and applied ceramic to my car. I’ve only driven the car about 3,000 miles since then and keep it well protected from weather in my garage. Just washed it and utilized the plastic bag technique. Felt Very-very minor bumps in surface. You mentioned in video that you don’t recommend claying a ceramic coating. Think I need to clay again before I add another ceramic product to the paint surfaces.

Thanks Jack! If you’re at the end if the life cycle of your coating, I would redo the entire process: wash, iron decon, clay, polish, IPA and reapply a fresh coat.
If it’s not the end of the life cycle, use an iron remover, and then after you’re done, apply a coat of silica spray sealant. Avoid claying.

Although I've only used one clay mit at this point in time, I have to say that from what I can tell so far, is that for heavy contamination, a old school poly clay bar will still work best. The car that made me realise that was a MDX that was most likely never detailed. There was some weird heavy iron contamination in the hatch area that took a combination of clay and iron remover to remove. The mit had no chance at tackling that situation. Also the malleability was a big advantage.

I clay, will try the new TW wash and upgrade to their new ceramic product.

@@PanTheOrganizer so far you helped me choose a good tire cleaner to help prepare the surface for diy prep and paint. I have learnt to wash top to bottom in the cooler times of the day. I have learnt that foaming rinsing then foaming reduces the amount of time in contact wash. White paint is easy to keep clean. Soon I will do a touch up on paint on rough spots, clean full body clay bar on a cool day then do a polish and boom. Nice paint. I would like to request an addition to the videos you have in line. I feel that the clay bar would the best choice to use. Simply because you could actually see the contaminates on the bar as opposed to the clay Mitt or towel. Also, the 3M's, and Meguiar's clay bars, that are made in Japan, are the best to use without spending a lot time claying and removing the contaminates on the finish. I noticed you didn't put the link for the professional grade clay bar from Meguiars, and 3M's, that are made in Japan, as you mentioned both of them here in your video.

Hey Pan! I have a video suggestion for you. I like you live in a harsh winter location, I'd love to see a video of how to clean a really hard winter dirty car for those whom don't have access to a heated garage without access to free flowing warm water. The entire process from removing the built up snow and ice in the wheel wells, caked on salt all that horrible fun stuff. I was also wondering if when it gets to that point can I use products such as Mastersons waterless wash and shine or ONR and power clean? I've been thinking about purchasing the Ammo NYC cleaning kit any thoughts? I saw a chemical guys video where he used eco smart on a really salt black car minus the close up... I know there's a lot in this comment but I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Very informative, thank you, as I’m looking to get a clay towel. Question: I have a 14 GT500, White with black stripes. The stripes are the issue! Ford has a protected right to these type of stripes ( in other words, they are only available from the dealer ). Well these thing can get marred very easily and even thou I haven’t used anything on them, I tried the Meguiars spray sealant, and they went cloudy! I’m guessing claying them would be out of the question to get a deep clean. Do you have any suggestions? I had to use FW1 on them to restore the gloss and lose the cloudiness on the Meguiars product. I, like you am in Canada, and 1 upper hood stripe is $274 dealer cost! So you can see why I’m nervous about them 😳

Great video full of useful information! I like traditional clay when time isn’t of the essence. If I need to clay quick I use my clay mitt. I use a ton of lube and I tell my viewers the same thing to not skimp in this area. The $3 worth of lube I use every time is worth it vs causes imperfections I would have to remove later. I need to try one of those clay towels.
One question: When I use my clay mitt I notice the little diamonds from the mitt on the paint at the ends of my back and forth motion if that makes sense. Is this normal or have you had this problem? My clay mitt is the fine mitt from Griot’s Garage.
