It was part of the British Overseas Territory and part of the Empire but was not independent until 1960. Cyprus, as an independent nation, has never been part of NATO.
The Federal Republic of Germany was admitted to NATO in 1955. The German Democratic Republic was already in the Warsaw Pact in 1949. Both German armies were integrated into these military alliances.
