    In all seriousness I’m living this out as an adult. I spent much of my life making bad choices only because I felt deprived as a kid growing up. I was in church all the time, I couldn’t do what other kids were doing, which I realized when I got grown that a lot of what I was taught not to do was actually what kids are supposed to do. BE A KID!
    I think that most Christian parents want the best for their kids and sometimes can be over barring at times, although I accept my mistakes and choices in life, I can’t help but to feel like if I wasn’t preached at all the time versus simply talked to and understood I wouldn’t have felt like I had to rebel against what I knew was right. See as a pk sometimes it seems like I had to live up to expectations that wasn’t realistic. The pressure from that can break you in ways you couldn’t imagine, a sense that you have to be almost perfect when nobody is.
    Just my thoughts about it🤐

I never went overboard, but when you have a repressed environment that doesn't let you talk about or express your teenage angst, you conform to a culture that's willing to listen to you. Also, that part in the video about parents being embarrassed in front of "their" friends - that's the fuel to every emo kid song ever. This actually highlights something going on with me that IS rather sad and not a joke. :( I am NOT one of these "dumb" people going "rebellious." Yes...I am starting to read Harry Potter. I am growing out of rigid thinking. But it hurts me that my family sees this as rebellion when I have never disrespected them or desired to hurt them. :( I wasn't raised to have boundaries with them. I am 24 years old, but was never encouraged to be independent. I don't think everything about homeschooling was negative, of course, but I'm very disillusioned because I'm still the same person that I used to be (in spirit, still walking with Jesus just as much) but because of these disagreements over the non-essentials, I now feel like a complete outsider to my family. This stuff can get serious. :( My emotional life is messy because I am now starting to cope with the effects of years of this rigid thinking.

      Wait - you weren't allowed to watch/read Harry potter? That isn't against Jesus. Seriously tho - the most Christian thing you could do is be nice to people. If anything, your parents saying that you cannot do stuff is them being non-Christian.

    • @Michael_Chandler_Keaton
      @Michael_Chandler_Keaton Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah, there's a good reason many Christians avoid Harry Potter. It's occultic, and intended to introduce children to the occult and normalize it.
      Sometimes rigid thinking I'd good. Especially when we live in a world where the king of evil, Prince of darkness is controlling all the world powers, media, entertainment. Everything that is hip and cool in this world can be traced back to Satan. We have to live in this world, but we don't need to be like them.

I had a mental breakdown last year (my sophomore year), because I went to a private christian school and couldn’t believe just how sheltered those people were. Now I’m doing homeschool due to health. I just felt so bound up there because I couldn’t express my writings or songs or ideas without heavily censoring them and dumbing them down. Rebellious behavior is actually a healthy part of teen and preteen development into adulthood; however when a parent's backlash against it is heavy, so is the child's. The best thing to do if your child starts going through a rebellious phase is to protect and punish them for behavior that could have truly serious repercussions(such as dating that 19 year old boy at age 15), but let them explore their own political views and opinions and even religious leanings, and choice of dress and so on. Accept them for the things that make them different- even if they scare you a bit- and worry about the things that could ACTUALLY hurt them(and not potentially hurt their innocent minds or some other nonsense). That's the best way to ensure your children don't not only go off the deep end but also run away from home or move out to never talk to you again.

    • @dontreadthisplease2416
      @dontreadthisplease2416 Před 6 lety +6

      Hannah Roland No. You see, to a Christian, you see, a different religious leaning is the most dangerous thing a kid could do because if they died tomorrow, they would go to hell, and god is more likely to strike them down for rebelling against their parents anyway.

    • @manguy01
      @manguy01 Před 6 lety +4

      Natural and healthy are two different things.
      A clash of wills is an inevitable result of growing independence. Some people call it rebellion while it's really just a kid starting to live by their own morals and interests. It's healthy
      Being rebellious is a perfectly natural result of a clash of wills. It's not unexpected for kids to overcompensate for their desire for agency. The need for recognition is powerful, and when it's not earned or granted many will try to take it. However, this is not healthy. Trying to force approval out of others is the epitome of immaturity, and it will only hamper your own personal growth toward independence.

    blimeycow,
    i know you probably won't believe me, but i was one of these kids. i know this video was made in good humor, but do not blame the kids.
    background, i was homeschooled from birth. i was in the house most of my life. not allowed to go to anyone else's house, not allowed on the internet. not allowed to have friends. both of my parents were severely mentally ill and my isolation led to a lot of abuse.
    when i first discovered the internet, i was so shocked that you could talk to people. that people would WANT to talk and interact with you because my mom made me believe that i wasnt worthy of attention. this led me getting into groups of edgy teens, who not only swore but passed around "offensive memes" and nazi jokes for fun. now, was this stupid? yeah, but the thing is i didn't know any better.
    i was not allowed to read harry potter, because my mom said it was satanic. no strawberry shortcake, no pokémon, no minecraft because they all had magic in them. you may not think these kind of people are real but you're wrong.
    this video was pretty good at recognizing the flaws in this kind of parenting, but instead of portraying those kids as cringey wannabees and the parents as stupid, but good natured, portray it as it really is. abusive parents and kids who don't know any better.

The word says "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he will grow older, he will not depart from it" So if you are allowing your child to rebel and do what he wants, then guess what? That's not what Jesus wants you to do. Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness as iniquity and idolatry. "Christians" who willfully rebel are not true to Jesus, but are rebellious sons of the devil

    My lady (8th grade) is basically raised in a bubble with pretty much all of the restrictions mentioned in your video. She actually isn't allowed to watch Spongebob. We wanted to see "The Space Between Us" and her parents went the night before to make sure it was "appropriate" for kids our age, they said no. So, our next option was "A Dog's Purpose" the went to see that movie and STILL decided it wasn't appropriate. I know it''s not because they don't like us together, because we all go to the same church and (as far as they know) it was just a friendly invite. Her parents are overprotective in my opinion, and I'm scared that she won't prepared for the world later in life. I believe I can help her get out her awkward, anxiety filled shell, but I don't want to make it obvious because I don't want her to think that's the only reason I'm with her. I feel I'm doing a good job so far, but if any of you want to give me a tip fell free.

      Mr. Noname I knew tons of kids who weren't allowed to watch spongebob. The funniest case is this utterly sheltered kid, who's still sheltered in the 9th grade. To be fair though I think he might have some kind of autism or...something else.

Like, I wasn’t supposed to be reading it until I was 15(my mom didn’t want me believing in that stuff, my sister wasn’t allowed to read it until she was 15 either), but everyone was reading it and we had tons of copies at school so I started reading it in secret until, like, Prisoner of Azkaban, and I thought I was so cool because I was reading Harry Potter! Also same thing happened with black nail polish. I thought I was so edgy.
