I’ve been watching for a long time on the Erik Grankvist channel how he builds his house from logs. He has already built it and is now working on the interior arrangement. when the logs dry they shrink significantly, so waiting to scribe the logs until they were dry means a much better long-term fit between the logs and at the joints and less movement from those joints in the long-run. So, yes, it's much harder to cut them when they are dry, but probably better in the end.

I liked that you dug holes in the ground put concrete in it then stacked large rocks around it filled that with concrete then put the square box on top of that to get it level. I have watched some people only dig a two in. hole then put just simi big rocks down and put the logs on top of that or two in. hole and use those small pyramid concrete blocks with the flat tops and watched both of them shift while they built there log home. I'm impressed with your build so far.
I have watched aii your vides and enjoyed them all. You do a great job on editing your own videos. You seem to a very intelligent man. I like your attention to details. Be interesting to see how you plain on getting logs up higher as you build. Lookin forward to the next video.

Having also enjoyed Nik Rijavec's videos the past several years, I couldn't help but notice a good number of similarities in this build, and both of their shooting/editing styles. Would be amazing if Matthias had seen Nik's videos as well, they're some of my favorite.
Even though I made a comment you may not like, I meant it as constructive criticism and I do love your work ethic and determination to take on such a daunting task.
This is skill beyond skill of a lot of first time diy builders. And you can cook !! ( loved the burger bar set up) And we all saw the bit of tomato fall on the ground.. you wiped it and stuck it on the burger bun Good on you, ;-) it shows you waste nothing. I have noted a few tips from the way you work and I'll be using them. I salute you young Sir, well done. Keep it up. And keep Safe ( lone workers are prone to little accidents )
How old are you? I say this because you are a very young boy and at that age, most of them go to parties and with their friends. It is very gratifying to see that a young man like you puts all those things aside to build his heritage. Really, your motivation reaches to the sky. Never give up. Congratulations!!! I really admire the method you are using to install the logs on the wall. Yes it is more about intensive and time consuming but makes I think for a much better end result

Looking great. you have really good skills. The only thing I would add is overscribing on your notches at the very top. At the very top of the notch I would leave a 1/4 or so gap that allows for compression and settling as logs dry. It is covered by the next log so there is no air getting in but you don't want the log sitting on that and have the notch open up. Its a lot of work and using all hand tools takes a lot of effort. That must be why you can wat 4 pork chops;)
Thank you! I bought the curved gouge in the Czech Republic, it's a Czech brand called "Narex", I also have an adze ax from them. I saw it on Amazon, so it is possible that you can also find a curved gouge there.
In my first log building I had issues with notches too big too small etc. I then got a book written by Robert Chambers Log Building Construction Manual. In that book he has a section on log selection rules: Butt 1, Butt2, Tip 1, and Tip 2. By measuring all your logs in the log yard you get an average size and there is a formula for which to select next. I never had any issues on the subsequent builds. Unfortunately I can't remember the formula and don't have ready access to the book.
Yeah, I know that there is this book. I would like to buy it because I saw that many people recommend this book. I follow this scheme (Butt 1, Butt2, Tip 1, and Tip 2) and so far I have not had a problem with this scheme. When choosing next log, I try to look a few steps ahead to be sure that everything will work out.

Another great video of your progress. I'm curious : Were you on your own all the time ? Is the land owned by your family ? Are you actually sleeping in the tent when not building/ crafting? How far are you from any stores for your food. And do you have means to contact anyone in an emergency? It's just riveting watching you progress. I love it Keep Safe.
Thank you. There is beauty in simplicity. Working with hand tools has several advantages: You are able to work off-grid, the entire set of tools you need can fit in one bag, there is better safety when you work alone, you don´t make too much noise when you´re working... so I enjoy it more and I believe you will too, while watching the videos :)

Matthias, I live in Alabama. I've never built a log cabin, how ever, that is what I want to do. I've watched you build the tiny cabin, and for this to be your very log cabin. You seem to be doing quite well, honestly. I'm curious to know just how old you are? I'm 51, and I know it takes lots of time, and a lot of hard work to build anything after being in construction my entire life. So, if you don't mind, how old are you?
