We tried recovering the abandoned boat but RAN INTO TROUBLE!

  • Hi all 👋 Last week, we decided to reclaim more of our garden space by pulling out what had been hiding in the brambles all this time..... an abandoned fibreglass hull boat on a trailer.
But what didn't help was everything had seized up and it was full to the brim with backbreaking stuff.... so much so, we needed to get help.

Build a raised deck on a couple of levels around the boat and make it a bbq/party area . Would be a great novelty thing to have on your land.

As an owner of boats for over fifty years, I am afraid it's sailing days are over. If tidied up nicely, it could be a cosy sleep over for guests. Other than that, a garden feature, hen house or see if someone would take it away for free. Well done on all your hard effort to free it from nature.

  • @normanboyes4983
    @normanboyes4983 Před 2 měsíci +35

Vikki - unless you have a vision of using this fibreglass shed on land - I would give someone £100 to take it away, as soon as possible. To restore this boat so it is safe to to use at sea is going to cost you thousands and divert thousands of man hours. To use safely as an inland waterway craft is going to cost you slightly less but still many hundred of man hours. If it is your passion to get afloat there are much cheaper and less labour intensive ways of doing so.
PS: After saying all of that you could cut off the deck and use it as a big grow bag - it has demonstrated its growing credentials already.😉🤣

I thought the same thing. Cover it back up and pretend you never saw it. Walk away whistling. Old boats from the 70s and 80s are a dime a dozen. If you need one, there are much better options. But I was very impressed by your work ethic.

I found a 28 ft. Sailboat on craigslist that I just had to put new tires on the trailer it was sitting on. I cut away all the brambles and cleared out the rain water inside. Hauled it 50 miles home and am working to refit the boat. I also had to remove a foot of compost out of the cockpit. I'm looking forward to many happy days of sailing. ⛵ 🐬 🏝️ 🙂

Sorry luv. The gel coat is a lost cause, it is totally sunstraked. Also that much water will have rotted the wood framing and transom. I built fibreglass boats for a living, and that boat would not pass a sea worthiness inspection in any country, no matter how many thousand quid you threw at it. Save the money for your cottage, sheds and fencing.

    • @zak2u2
      @zak2u2 Před 16 dny

@@jangrahame4891 The decks are made of foam sandwiched in fiberglass (as I'm sure you know). They are surely rotted. She will be sorry she ever saw this boat.

Nice little boat. It may not be for you but hopefully it can find a new home, and someone will put the work into getting it back on the water. I know a lot of people on here are throwing in the towel on this one ever being seaworthy again but the fact that it is an open water boat with a fixed keel and that great rudder means it could actually see life again. Those older fiberglass hulls are thick, and the outer crazing (little cracks) is likely just cosmetic to the gel coat or "outer paint". I found my trailer sailor on the side of the Monocacy River in Maryland in the U.S. and it looked about the same. Retitled it as an abandoned boat and spent about four years restoring it as a hobby with my brother. We take her out on the Chesapeake Bay every summer. Aside from the new outboard motor, I think I have spent maybe $500.00 on fiberglass and other supplies although she could use $500 more. It helps to grow up working on boats admittedly.

If it was me, I'd make it into a garden feature. Plant blue and white flowers around the bottom to represent waves. I'd build a deck on the top with a few seats, side table and lighting so you and Mr TCD can enjoy warm evening relaxation and watch the sun set. I think it would cost thousands to restore it to the point of putting it on open waters.

I've sailed all my life and owned many boats. Your boat is a great candidate for someone who has the time to restore her to her former glory. The restoration would be for love because, as others have said, its not economically viable. To buy a suit of sails for it would probably increase the value of the boat to half the cost of the sails! Loved the video of you extracting it though - thanks for sharing the experience with us.

Our fmily owned a few fishing boats and occasionally one might get into trouble and get beached. to drain out any water that may have been shipped, we simply used a 3 meter length of 20mm poly pipe and siphoned the water out. It worked on one which was 65 ' long. it would be easy for you to do that and you can leave it there incase it gets another load of water. The siphon will work by itself .

Hi Vicki, as a dream it would be great to take it sailing, in reality as others have said it will be a time eater and money pit, even as a garden feature. 😀Visit a marina or boat yard to see the number of unfinished projects which have been underneath tarps for years. Give it away, when you’ve finished the house and garden perhaps buy a boat. I admire your work ethic and enthusiasm.

I would use it as a garden ornament, if you want to use it as a boat then also everything needs to be fixed or replaced. The fiberglass in the hull might or might not be OK, and the keel might be OK, but everything else is not good enough for sailing. So the best use is as a garden ornament.

That cracking is just the gel coat its not the fiber glass and definitely wont be wear the water is getting in its more liking around any window seals or hatch seals the gel coat not to big of an issues can just be sanded back and new jel coat applied the hull its self is in reasonable condition no big holes or damage visible it just all needs a good clean definitely repairable its fiberglass at the end of the day ! Iv seen boats in far worse condition brought back to life thats got real potential i would put my heart abd soal into that if i found that on my land! Also its a single keel so gonna be fast probably a racing yatch in its day !

So exciting to find a boat like that on your land, it's crying out to be restored!
You are lucky to have plenty of space, so it won't cost you anything to store it for now.
If it was me, I would dry it out, get a tarp over it and put it out the way for now, while you get to where you want to be with your other projects on the house and garden. You can take your time to decide if it is a project you want to take on and could always sell it much later on, if you decide against it.

This could well be osmosis of the GRP, If correct it would need extensive drying and work to correct even if salvageable. Might be worth having somebody give it the once over to check for sure before making any decision's.

Those spider web cracks are where another boat, likely a metal boat, has rammed the side of it. Yes, it's in the gel coat, however you'd need to inspect the integrity of the glass fibre behind it for damage. That's actually the worse I've seen, so it's taken a few big whacks. Another reason why to simple get rid of it. Gel coat crack will lead to water ingress.

I would selll as a project boat... living near the Grand Union canal there are hulks up for sail that are in much greater need of repair than yours. That could be bought up and refurbed by people that are looking for home that cannot afford a narrowboat and will do the work themselves. I have a few acquaintances that went down this route and while living at home with family they got the boat water ready to their specifications. Their investment of money and time, like you did a lot of work themselves (indeed I remember a wood-trimming party in my garden where lots of timber was brought round and the mitre and table saw were fully used, I was paid in drinks which I could only consume after the event (I like my fingers)) and now they are building up savings to get a mortgage deposit together, which sadly seems an ever increasing target.
The summer of 2022 was one of saw blades... and it was righteous.

I would agree with other commenters that you should part ways with this boat - it cant be a priority for you with everything else on the farm! I don't think I'd even bother sinking it into the ground, the effort to do that vs just building more raised beds/a more spacious sitting place seems disproportionate.

The wood parts inside the boat is the mast and the mount for it. I would not be surprised if the holes on the mount(the thing like a 'TT' is the mount) match up with holes uyp top somewhere.
That sailboat is built for open waters, yeah. Lakes preferably, but should be able to handle the sea, too.
The keel is not just a counterweight for the mast, but modern sails have more in common with an aeroplane wing, and the sail/keel balances the boat similarly to the wings on a plane. Weird stuff, but fun.
I can reccommend the book 'Sailing for Dummies'. Yes, it's a real book. And it's good.
Whatever you do, DO NOT bury the boat hull anywhere. Fiberglass needs to be scrapped by professionals.

chances are good that the rain water soaked through the fiberglass interior and any wood underneath will be rotten , might make a good flowerbed !!

The number of projects the house has produced is fun. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Boat might be a big project but if paced over a few years it maybe achievable. Content is content. It does seem like a nice size for a pleasure boat. Sailing more fun than motor to me.

As others have said, that trailer would be of great value to someone. If you try to pass on the boat but no takers... At least you've tried and could then settle for the garden deck idea. 😉 A great shame about that rust. Tragic, even. But otherwise, looks like you already have a lot else to get on with around your estate. 🙂

That bumper trim is called the rub rail. It looks like you're going to need to build another rudder. You know that you're going to refit it and go sailing don't you.

I also sail and rebuilt old sailboats here in NC
I don't know what your rules are these days, but I would turn it into a small guesthouse or kids play fort and for sure make some nice art out of it with 4 acres

At 25:10 you mention about it not being for a canal but for open water. But it does also have a British Waterways Board licence. I don't know where in the country you are (or, perhaps more relevant, where the former owners originally came from) but there are some places where you have canals with access to the sea.
For example, on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, at Sharpness marina there are both narrow boats and sailing boats like the one you found. There are locks at Sharpness so that you can enter the Severn and sail off. You will also see some quite large sailing yachts moored in Gloucester docks. But there again the Gloucester & Sharpness is more of a ship canal and is up to 25m wide.
The other alternative would be the Norfolk Broads, but I don't know if they ever came under the British Waterways Board, I think that they may have always had their own authority running it.

*You set yourself a challenge to get the boat out.... Congratulations, cos you did it... 🙂 What next for the boat... well only you both can make that decision...🙂But whatever you decide.. just know, that you worked damn hard to get it to where you have it now, well away from any brambles 🙂nz*
