We tried recovering the abandoned boat but RAN INTO TROUBLE!

- Hi all 👋 Last week, we decided to reclaim more of our garden space by pulling out what had been hiding in the brambles all this time..... an abandoned fibreglass hull boat on a trailer.
But what didn't help was everything had seized up and it was full to the brim with backbreaking stuff.... so much so, we needed to get help.

What would YOU do with this boat??
I'd bin it but that's real life, for a CZcamsr that project would be great content with a good backstory. If you can restore it might be worth doing for the views.
That boat looks like either 1. a 15-part restoration series or - 2. fill it with soil and change it into a garden feature.
Okay, now I have seen the boat out of the brambles - Garden feature.
Put it in the water for the wild life birds ducks etc, imagine birds nesting in there year after year, maybe put soil on some areas and plant flowers for butterflies and bees ? 😊
Seating area, play pretend sailors😂,some would say air bnb, I would half bury and grow flowers from it
Build a raised deck on a couple of levels around the boat and make it a bbq/party area . Would be a great novelty thing to have on your land.
I absolutely love this idea!!!
As an owner of boats for over fifty years, I am afraid it's sailing days are over. If tidied up nicely, it could be a cosy sleep over for guests. Other than that, a garden feature, hen house or see if someone would take it away for free. Well done on all your hard effort to free it from nature.
Vikki - unless you have a vision of using this fibreglass shed on land - I would give someone £100 to take it away, as soon as possible. To restore this boat so it is safe to to use at sea is going to cost you thousands and divert thousands of man hours. To use safely as an inland waterway craft is going to cost you slightly less but still many hundred of man hours. If it is your passion to get afloat there are much cheaper and less labour intensive ways of doing so.
PS: After saying all of that you could cut off the deck and use it as a big grow bag - it has demonstrated its growing credentials already.😉🤣
Its a land ornament now 🤣🤣👍
I thought the same thing. Cover it back up and pretend you never saw it. Walk away whistling. Old boats from the 70s and 80s are a dime a dozen. If you need one, there are much better options. But I was very impressed by your work ethic.
Finally a English language that I can clearly understand without using the translation.
Thank you for this video.⛵
I found a 28 ft. Sailboat on craigslist that I just had to put new tires on the trailer it was sitting on. I cut away all the brambles and cleared out the rain water inside. Hauled it 50 miles home and am working to refit the boat. I also had to remove a foot of compost out of the cockpit. I'm looking forward to many happy days of sailing. ⛵ 🐬 🏝️ 🙂
Sorry luv. The gel coat is a lost cause, it is totally sunstraked. Also that much water will have rotted the wood framing and transom. I built fibreglass boats for a living, and that boat would not pass a sea worthiness inspection in any country, no matter how many thousand quid you threw at it. Save the money for your cottage, sheds and fencing.
@@jangrahame4891 The decks are made of foam sandwiched in fiberglass (as I'm sure you know). They are surely rotted. She will be sorry she ever saw this boat.
Nice little boat. It may not be for you but hopefully it can find a new home, and someone will put the work into getting it back on the water. I know a lot of people on here are throwing in the towel on this one ever being seaworthy again but the fact that it is an open water boat with a fixed keel and that great rudder means it could actually see life again. Those older fiberglass hulls are thick, and the outer crazing (little cracks) is likely just cosmetic to the gel coat or "outer paint". I found my trailer sailor on the side of the Monocacy River in Maryland in the U.S. and it looked about the same. Retitled it as an abandoned boat and spent about four years restoring it as a hobby with my brother. We take her out on the Chesapeake Bay every summer. Aside from the new outboard motor, I think I have spent maybe $500.00 on fiberglass and other supplies although she could use $500 more. It helps to grow up working on boats admittedly.
If it was me, I'd make it into a garden feature. Plant blue and white flowers around the bottom to represent waves. I'd build a deck on the top with a few seats, side table and lighting so you and Mr TCD can enjoy warm evening relaxation and watch the sun set. I think it would cost thousands to restore it to the point of putting it on open waters.
Love the flower waves idea.
I would have it as my pond boat . One of a kind spare room .
👏
I've sailed all my life and owned many boats. Your boat is a great candidate for someone who has the time to restore her to her former glory. The restoration would be for love because, as others have said, its not economically viable. To buy a suit of sails for it would probably increase the value of the boat to half the cost of the sails! Loved the video of you extracting it though - thanks for sharing the experience with us.
But why would they bother. It's non-notable & there are 100s of better ones out there worthy of investing time & energy into.
If you can't salvage it you can have a really fancy decking/seating area by the lake. It's already themed for you! 😁
Siphon the water out with a garden hose pipe just make the end of is lower than the submerged end, so quick..
... or get/rent a submersible water pump. You have power to the boat (for your jetwash), and the pump usually comes with a very long flexible hose. It would clear the boat in about 15 minutes.
The young Vikkie was so much happier and more enthusiastic! 😊 !
Haha...maybe I just did a good job editing my mardy bits out before 😅
I swear I heard you say you were the cobblers daughter. Give it away and concentrate on the outbuildings and other stuff. I really like your place, so tranquil. Best regards. 🙃
I think (NOV 5th) would be a good day to part ways with that "Moneypit"!! Cheers.
😆😆
Burning fiberglass might not be so good for November 5th, trying to breath air anywhere near that burning might be a bit too toxic.
Ohhhhhh you said exactly what I was thinking - right at the end - cut it in half - create a Beach theme zone with loads of rocks and ropes and have the boat sunk partly in the ground with bench seating inside - a gorgeous chill out zone :) x what a fabulous boat loved this :)
Hi vikki there may be a bung near the bottum of boat or a drain hole that may be blocked up put a screwdriver up it may open it so water will drain out .i cover it over and when you do the house and garden then you have a nice project to do
Not in a sailing boat. If you haven't got a bilge pump, you just drill a hole in it. Or remove one of the through hulls.
Fabulous video, Vikkie. One of your best!
Brilliant video vikki thanks for sharing 👍 👍
Great episode. The boat made me feel sad. But since it's fibreglass, maybe it can be a boat again.
It's very sad, isn't it? I'd love to know where it's travelled and how it looked inside in its prime 😍
Our fmily owned a few fishing boats and occasionally one might get into trouble and get beached. to drain out any water that may have been shipped, we simply used a 3 meter length of 20mm poly pipe and siphoned the water out. It worked on one which was 65 ' long. it would be easy for you to do that and you can leave it there incase it gets another load of water. The siphon will work by itself .
Hi Vicki, as a dream it would be great to take it sailing, in reality as others have said it will be a time eater and money pit, even as a garden feature. 😀Visit a marina or boat yard to see the number of unfinished projects which have been underneath tarps for years. Give it away, when you’ve finished the house and garden perhaps buy a boat. I admire your work ethic and enthusiasm.
It’s the house that just keeps giving ❤
You both did well getting that uncovered and cleaned up, it looks fab how about putting in the water for wild life birds ducks etc, obviously get it water tight and ready first thanks Vikkie for the upload 😊
What a great find I would use it as a sun deck ❤
I would use it as a garden ornament, if you want to use it as a boat then also everything needs to be fixed or replaced. The fiberglass in the hull might or might not be OK, and the keel might be OK, but everything else is not good enough for sailing. So the best use is as a garden ornament.
That cracking is just the gel coat its not the fiber glass and definitely wont be wear the water is getting in its more liking around any window seals or hatch seals the gel coat not to big of an issues can just be sanded back and new jel coat applied the hull its self is in reasonable condition no big holes or damage visible it just all needs a good clean definitely repairable its fiberglass at the end of the day ! Iv seen boats in far worse condition brought back to life thats got real potential i would put my heart abd soal into that if i found that on my land! Also its a single keel so gonna be fast probably a racing yatch in its day !
Love this Vikkie, would be a lush garden feature.
Your best vision of that boat would be hooked up to someone elses car pulling out of your driveway.
So exciting to find a boat like that on your land, it's crying out to be restored!
You are lucky to have plenty of space, so it won't cost you anything to store it for now.
If it was me, I would dry it out, get a tarp over it and put it out the way for now, while you get to where you want to be with your other projects on the house and garden. You can take your time to decide if it is a project you want to take on and could always sell it much later on, if you decide against it.
Looks like 12 episodes of CZcams content on restoring the sailboat that will serve as income after you restore the property you bought at auction. Maybe special guest volunteers in vintage boat restoration? I know for sure that marine plywood boat DIY building is an enduring hobby that could draw like minded boat hobbyists that would not have otherwise visited your channel. I was recommended this video by CZcams because my history of visiting yachting and boat building related channels.
Wow that Boat is lovely. Bit of a clean up and your skills it'll be reet! Love your videos ❤
Another great video!
I know it would be a lot of work but it would be awesome to see that on the water again
You got my vote, hate to see any sailboat get grounded.
Get yourself a decent pair of chainsaw gloves - the thorns won't penetrate the gloves. And don't forget the chain oil for your polesaw, the reservoir to oil the chain is very small and running a polesaw without lubricant will ruin it in no time.
That dont look like its ever going to sea 🌊again ! but i enjoyed you digging it out so we could see it.👀
It was a silhouette 17.. However now it's beyond saving, unfortunately due to the cost of materials and the amount of labour needed to fix it.
Wow - that's a job and a half!
If it was holding water, there is a fair bet the hull is somewhat sound
Love wot your doing my dear
Great find! However just after you finished power washing and walked around the boat i noticed there were what looked like blisters on the hull. This could well be osmosis of the GRP, If correct it would need extensive drying and work to correct even if salvageable. Might be worth having somebody give it the once over to check for sure before making any decision's.
👍👍👍. Thanks Vikkie
First time I have watched your channel. The talking and walking along at the beginning forcably reminded me of a BBC documentary. LOL. Good stuff.
Well done you made that look easier then it probably was what ever you decide what to do with it good luck your doing a amazing job 😊 if it was me I’d plant flowers in it as a feature after painting it up as think it might become a money pit to fix properly
Loved the bit where you jet washed the rudder!
That’s funny that you found a boat in your garden, I did the same. But it turned out to be one of the kids toys from next door 😂. I love the video, I hope you restore it 👍👍
You could have just syphoned out the water with a lenghth of hose. Dump one end into the water and the other end onto the ground below the boat, start the syphon and leave it to it.
Next time use a long hose, fill it up with water, hang it down over the side and into the water, the water will flow out automatically .. it will take a long time but it will drain easy
Your home is absolutely gorgeous! I love it so much! I also really like how needed it is to see how different homes are from the UK to the US! I am so disappointed. We did not get to see Claire’s crafty corner though. I was so excited to see where all of your creations are made so maybe you would let us see? I hope I hope I hope! Lol
Good luck.
The "bumper trim wood", is the gunnel, usually teak. Take proper measurements of the rudder, before it falls apart.
If you really really want to use it in the future, dry it out and put a cover over it to store for a future project. If you don't really really want another boat give it away. It'll either cost you nothing or a huge amount :)
Also..... tractor.... you know it'd have made moving the boat easy.....
Those spider web cracks are where another boat, likely a metal boat, has rammed the side of it. Yes, it's in the gel coat, however you'd need to inspect the integrity of the glass fibre behind it for damage. That's actually the worse I've seen, so it's taken a few big whacks. Another reason why to simple get rid of it. Gel coat crack will lead to water ingress.
What a great renovation Series in the Offing?? ..... I reckon that crackling was the Freezing conditions turning the water inside into ICE over the years ... Good Luck Gang .... OH!! And you can't beat a DAD for getting you OUT of trouble 😂😂
Could be a fun little boat to put together and take sailing to get away from your farm. Seems as though your van can pull it, she has a tabernacle mast so easy to stand the rigging.
I would say build a rudder out of fiberglass, do a cheap refit to her, I am sure some used sails can be found, she would make a great little setup for getting away on the weekends and being a trailer boat you can take her to lakes.
I wonder if she was a little yacht who sailed the Norfolk broads, be nice to see her go to sea again.
Yes, it'd be nice to see 🥰
throw a tarp over it and wait til you have more time for it. Great find no matter what you decide to do with it...
I was going to suggest a box of matches is needed, but I doubt it would burn as it’s so rotten. Somethings are best left uncovered.
Great accomplishment getting through all that..phew😅
You guys need a TMC Consela mulcher grinder and a skidsterre. We'll be looking forward to future videos 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The small cracks are in gel coat
Needs sanding off and regelcoat.very labor intensive and expensive
It clearly brings you joy to sit in that little boat. Build some steps and make it a permanent sitting area to enjoy that view. Why not install a wine fridge? Enjoy. PS love the vids for ideas. I too recently popped up some loft shelves.
Cut the bottom off, or bury it a bit, and turn it into a garden sitting area. It can be your cheeky glass of wine on a summer night, dreaming of sailing the sea, without draining the coffers. Oh, and sell the trailer.
If you bury it midway, you could even use the inside for when the weather is a bit inclement, but too nice to go back into the house.
Treat yourself to a newer/better boat further down the line.
cheers.
Your excitement for the boat is so infectious! As cool as it is It would be a money pit. Living on the coast a lot off friends have boats and work in the marine industry, my old man works for Princess Yachts. Boats are great fun but about as cost effective as lighting cigars with £20 notes 😂 That being said I would watch a resto series but maybe focus on the house first! haha
Day 1 was a pretty solid chunk of work.
Sell it. Someone would love this as a renovation project. Then you might be able to buy some really useful equipment to help with your landscaping. 😎 👍
I would selll as a project boat... living near the Grand Union canal there are hulks up for sail that are in much greater need of repair than yours. That could be bought up and refurbed by people that are looking for home that cannot afford a narrowboat and will do the work themselves. I have a few acquaintances that went down this route and while living at home with family they got the boat water ready to their specifications. Their investment of money and time, like you did a lot of work themselves (indeed I remember a wood-trimming party in my garden where lots of timber was brought round and the mitre and table saw were fully used, I was paid in drinks which I could only consume after the event (I like my fingers)) and now they are building up savings to get a mortgage deposit together, which sadly seems an ever increasing target.
The summer of 2022 was one of saw blades... and it was righteous.
Nice WORK VIKKIE ❤️ ❤❤❤
I am so jealous that your job is to can spend time on all these projects - i can only manage a snatched hour a couple of times a week, in between everything else.
I would agree with other commenters that you should part ways with this boat - it cant be a priority for you with everything else on the farm! I don't think I'd even bother sinking it into the ground, the effort to do that vs just building more raised beds/a more spacious sitting place seems disproportionate.
I think if you post it online for cheap. Someone would love to restore it.
What is a boat you ask? Why it’s a hole in the water you throw money into! 😆
Wow, those brambles were thick! That looked like something from the Amazon.
I say keep it as a sun deck until you have time to renovate it. With the other buildings it could be a quirky air b and b feature x
I'd love it as a garden feature 🥰
G'Day TCD,, I think you'll need more than a carpenter to get tub seaworthy 👍.
Great video thank you! When boats get to be in that condition they are no longer an asset but really a liability. It would cost way more to fix than it would ever be worth. You would be lucky to find someone to take it off your hands for free and it would probably cost a lot to dispose of properly. It is sad to see.
A story well told , come back for the sequel I guess.
I think that looks like a great mini bar or boat bar...
What a lovely find, me because I'm mental I'd save her however I'd convert her so I could use her on the canals.
The wood parts inside the boat is the mast and the mount for it. I would not be surprised if the holes on the mount(the thing like a 'TT' is the mount) match up with holes uyp top somewhere.
That sailboat is built for open waters, yeah. Lakes preferably, but should be able to handle the sea, too.
The keel is not just a counterweight for the mast, but modern sails have more in common with an aeroplane wing, and the sail/keel balances the boat similarly to the wings on a plane. Weird stuff, but fun.
I can reccommend the book 'Sailing for Dummies'. Yes, it's a real book. And it's good.
Whatever you do, DO NOT bury the boat hull anywhere. Fiberglass needs to be scrapped by professionals.
Looks like you have some interesting neighbours The flag!!
That “Duck” looked more like a goose to me. I’m guessing barnacle goose, from the brief glimpse I got of it.
Definitely a mallard 😀
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK it looked black and white to me, with a longer neck. Did it have a green head?😂
I think I would turn it into a house boat on your pond 😉
chances are good that the rain water soaked through the fiberglass interior and any wood underneath will be rotten , might make a good flowerbed !!
The number of projects the house has produced is fun. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Boat might be a big project but if paced over a few years it maybe achievable. Content is content. It does seem like a nice size for a pleasure boat. Sailing more fun than motor to me.
Nice cleanup that was sadisfying to watch😂Can the boat be saved you think?
Boat…..i see more of a hole in the water to throw money in to….good luck!👍👍
A mouse is walking on the edge! 😉
As others have said, that trailer would be of great value to someone. If you try to pass on the boat but no takers... At least you've tried and could then settle for the garden deck idea. 😉 A great shame about that rust. Tragic, even. But otherwise, looks like you already have a lot else to get on with around your estate. 🙂
That bumper trim is called the rub rail. It looks like you're going to need to build another rudder. You know that you're going to refit it and go sailing don't you.
It would be cheaper to buy a boat than it would be to repair that wreck.
It’d make a great project for CZcams 😉 Something to do between the other stuff you have going on. It’d also be something to look forward to enjoying.
Bit of a hidden treasure waiting to be found & used.
rub rail? well done getting it out😊😊😊
I'm from UK, but live stateside for years.
I also sail and rebuilt old sailboats here in NC
I don't know what your rules are these days, but I would turn it into a small guesthouse or kids play fort and for sure make some nice art out of it with 4 acres
That apple looks like you started on it months ago!!!
At 25:10 you mention about it not being for a canal but for open water. But it does also have a British Waterways Board licence. I don't know where in the country you are (or, perhaps more relevant, where the former owners originally came from) but there are some places where you have canals with access to the sea.
For example, on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, at Sharpness marina there are both narrow boats and sailing boats like the one you found. There are locks at Sharpness so that you can enter the Severn and sail off. You will also see some quite large sailing yachts moored in Gloucester docks. But there again the Gloucester & Sharpness is more of a ship canal and is up to 25m wide.
The other alternative would be the Norfolk Broads, but I don't know if they ever came under the British Waterways Board, I think that they may have always had their own authority running it.
*You set yourself a challenge to get the boat out.... Congratulations, cos you did it... 🙂 What next for the boat... well only you both can make that decision...🙂But whatever you decide.. just know, that you worked damn hard to get it to where you have it now, well away from any brambles 🙂nz*
All around you can see it was once someone’s dream. All that’s left rot and decay
Agree. And now it's our dream 😍
Look on the bright side. If it holds water it should float.
It just needs a little Love it will buff out .
