So Matt, I live in SC on the Georgia border, I own 69 acres, lived here 24 years. All I can say is Mother Nature is relentless. Learn from my mistakes, BUY A TRACTOR (LS brand 32 HP four wheel drive), the bigger the better with a Brush-hog. Then add implements as you go. Yes you will need a Barn to store it! Wish someone like me had told me this 24 years ago! Oh yeah, it's paid off, and I sleep well at night! You kids are Living Large! You just don't know how large yet! Oh Yeah I would name the mower "Metro" because it really can't get the job done! You Kids still ROCK!

M is a hard worker but he is only one person for the whole property, and the time is a commodity. Bigger tractor with a brush hog will do the work in a few hours, while with smaller tractors it will take days, and in meantime they will keep breaking. They are made for landscaped gardens not jungle. Complete waste of time and money.

Someone suggested the name Moe for the mower, which I find fitting. As for the equipment, consider purchasing a tractor. Using your mower as a Bush Hog will likely lead to its premature destruction. A tractor-mounted bush hog can handle tougher tasks like cutting down small trees and bamboo. Tractors, such as my 1973 Massey Ferguson 135, are built to last and require only occasional maintenance. Many also recommend a front bucket attachment; it's a valuable addition you won't regret. Without it, you might find yourself in the same predicament as with the undersized mower.

I would agree with Philip. Matt, Matt. You need to seriously consider a mid size tractor with a PTO drive. So you can gradually get different attachments. You have 8 acres in a jungle. Your life will be a whole lot easier and you're not going anywhere. It's an investment. They last forever if you maintain them. I bought a used New Holland with a front load bucket, tiller attachment, bush hog attachment, and just got a small backhoe attachment. Wow, I should have done this years ago. I'm sure you already know this though. You could have done all that work, in half the time. Peace, 🙏

Iguanas love to decimate gardens. Anything with bright blossoms or fruit/vegetables will be consumed. Iguanas will also burrow under any concrete pad or structure to build nests. One female can lay up to 70 eggs at a time. They are invasive because they are not part of the natural ecosystem, they have no natural predators in PR so they decimate some plants and native birds (they rob nests for eggs). Matt, your "we're all invasive spiel is correct and humans are the most destructive invasive species. That doesn't mean we should embrace destructive pests like iguanas. Consider the native plants, birds and other species who have no defense against iguanas. Good luck with any fruit/vegetable gardens if you are unwilling to deal with the chickens of the jungle. Greetings from Costa Rica where iguana are native.

Cross-pollinating different varieties of pumpkins can result in the creation of new and unique pumpkin varieties. This happens when the pollen from one pumpkin variety is transferred to the flower of another variety, either naturally by insects or through hand-pollination. The seeds produced from this cross will have genetic characteristics from both parent plants12.
However, it’s important to note that the fruit that grows in the current season will not be affected by the cross-pollination. The fruit’s appearance and taste will be determined by the seed it was planted from. It’s only the next generation, grown from the seeds resulting from the cross, that will potentially show traits from both parent varieties2.
If you’re looking to experiment with pumpkin cross-pollination, you might want to consider isolating the flowers to control the pollination process. This can be done using pollination bags or by manually transferring pollen from one flower to another. Keep in mind that pumpkins are part of the Cucurbita genus, and varieties within the same botanical species can cross-pollinate, while varieties from different species generally do not3.
For gardeners interested in saving seeds and growing unique pumpkin varieties, cross-pollination can be an exciting way to explore new possibilities in their gardens.

Pumpkin tip (same for all seed plantings) - Don’t fall in love with every plant….be willing to thin them by pinching the weak plant when two grow up in same spot (don’t pull it to avoid root damage to the keeper). Personal suggestion, grow peppers …very easy and high reward.
Zero Turn Radius (ZTR) tips - start small and grow by adding to the edges of your existing tamed turf. By running only 1/2 of the deck width into wild territory, you keep the blade speed up and mulch down the new area better (don’t be greedy). Send the mulched clippings to the existing turf to prevent buildup on the wild floor. The clippings are fuel to the turf as they break down and they create a self leveling floor with gravity, rain, and traffic being the natural leveling mechanism. The more often you mow, the faster that your lower growing grasses will develop a thicker turf (less mud) and taller growing plants will eventually yield to the lower grasses. Mow in lines that flow and try to avoid stopping and harsh turns in order to reduce wear/tear on your Z as well as, the turf. Clean your Z, prevent build up…especially under deck, check for and remove material from pulley or belt. Let your machete knock down the bigger caliper stuff to make your machine last longer and reduce downtime for repairs/maintenance. Keep one of those grippers and a bucket on your Z to pick up debris without leaving your seat (place debris in bucket). Enjoy the seat time as routine effort begins to open your mind to creative thinking (Therapeutic). Wear ear protection and don’t run mower where there are animals that can get hit by a dislodged stone.

Yes you get what you get unless they are heirloom varieties or open pollinated varieties that will not cross pollinate with other varieties but the seeds for next season if you save them will be the ones that you don't know what you will get the next season if that makes any sense to you. Hope that helps you. Am 71 and been gardening my whole life much. Learn by your mistakes and remember to learn from people in your area what grows best for that climate. Maybe join a Puerto Rico gardening group to learn more. I have lived in SC, Georgia, Colorado and now back to my home state of Maine and learn something new everyday. Much love and good luck. Oh and one other thing is to save all your clippings and make a compost pile which once broken down will make great garden fertilizers for your gardens,,fruits trees or whatever.

Tractor solution, buy in the states and ship in small shipping container which is probably cheaper. If you get attachments it just makes it even cheaper shipping all together. Things to buy as package deal, compact tractor and some attachments, brush hog, forks, box blade could be easy welding project (used for grading and smoothing over time), mower deck, plow (use cuttings, scrap food, prettymuch anything to till into that clay so it can transform the clay intogreat soil). You can even build a trailer so you can move stuff around by truck or tractor. The tractor doesn't have to even be new, just run and some fixes.

Hey guys!!! You can self pollinate your pumpkin flowers! So easy! The first flowers are usually male on a skinny stem, and later the female flowers show up, on a stem with a bulbous area below the flower.. All you have to do is pick a male flower, when you see the females blooming, and smoosh gently but fully into the female bloom with the bulbous area below the flower. Voila! ❤❤

If you don't build a secure garden, you won't have a garden. That includes netting on top because they can climb over the fence. My cats have destroyed my garden and they didn't even eat anything. Iguanas want to eat EVERYTHING you grow.

it was a nice episode again. Before I plant a seed I have it in the refrigerator! Then the seed thinks it is too cold to hatch. Then I take a disposable coffee cup and put soil in it and plant the seed. Take a wooden stick and stick it in the ground and take a sandwich bag and put it over it with an elastic band around the cup and place it in front of the window. As soon as the seed hatches, immediately remove the bag. A nice name for the lawn mower, it doesn't go that fast, so Speedy is not a nice name. But maybe Weedy is a nice name.

Really enjoying watching the switch from sailing to homesteading. Watching you two set up the pumpkin patch had me thinking about some of the other homesteading channels I watch, I'd recommend checking out some of @LivingTraditionsHomestead videos. They do a lot with using and re-using the garden fabric and have a lot of tips and tricks to making it work for you - i.e. burning holes for the plants through the fabric instead of cutting/ripping to minimize weed growth and having the fabric last longer. Keep up the hard work, looking forward to the jungle house you two have in the future!

For the pollination, it won't change how your pumpkins look. If you save the seeds though, they will be a cross breed and may not look like the original plant you saved them from.
It's best to hand pollinate your flowers. Rub a little paint brush around the male flowers and then poke it around the inside of the female flower (the ones with the tiny pumpkin)

I didn’t read all the way down - but to answer your pollination question. This year - you will get pumpkins of every kind on the packet. If you save the seed from your pumpkins this year - this is where the cross pollination comes in. When you plant the seeds next year, the resulting pumpkins may look like Mum / Dad / both / completely different. Can be fun, and if you are just growing to eat and aren’t too bothered what it looks like I wouldn’t worry. Otherwise just use fresh seed each year.
