- Leather Wallet Pockets are a pretty straight-forward step in making a wallet right? Apparently not, because one issue continues to plague the leather craft world: Slot Gap.
If you or a leather crafter you know has fallen victim to Slot Gap, please leave a comment below outlining your experience so that others don't make the same mistakes. Together we can put an end to Slot Gap.
I'm seriously just bugging you guys. Do whatever makes you happy. Hope you enjoyed the video. 😂
Huge thanks to my buddy Ira for helping me make my point (albeit under duress). Go check out his CZcams channel here:

Another huge thanks to Roger McIntosh. This dude heard me complaining about not having an anvil or stone slab in one of my videos and sent me the marble slab seen in this video. Go give him a follow here:

My name is Tim. Thanks for checking out my CZcams channel. I started leather working in July of 2020. My passion for leather work quickly grew as I learned and practiced. I received a ton of help from the leather working community when I was new and now I aim to pass on what I learn to other beginner leather workers. I post weekly leather craft videos that include tutorials, free pdf pattern templates, how to's, tips and tricks, and any other leather work content that I think could help you out!

Haha thanks for doing it!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoodsthe thing about leather craft is that it’s our job to find better ways to
Excellent advice. I’m always trying to figure out clean lines and neatness with my work. This is fantastic. Thank you.
Thanks, Cheryl!
I'm new to leatherworking and definately going to try this on next card holder or wallet! Thank you. I was just thinking today is there any better way to do those pockets and there you go. Very informative channel.
Most underrated leather working channel. I love your content! Keep it up.
Wow thank you so much! I'll be back posting new videos soon!
Yes....just have started making wallets and the, what ever you called it, gap slot thing was bugging the crap out of me.....great tip...Thanks!! Except now I have to go buy one of those skiving tools you were using!!
I started doing this myself the last few I’ve done. Glad to see it’s someone else’s pet peeve too, haha. Thanks for the idea of the use of wing dividers for the curved tee. I avoided that by making the last couple wallets with straight top t’s because I ran them through the bell skiver, but much prefer the curved t’s for wallets.
The wing divider trick is pretty good. I wish I could take credit for it but I saw it in a Corter Leather video while I was filming this and had to quickly add it.
I prefer a curved top too, but it'd be tempting to stick with straight tops to just run them through a bell skiver!
Thanks for watching the video! Much appreciated.
I love this idea! I have completed 2 wallets and am a newbie to leather working. I was so disappointed in the way they looked, especially if the cut was a tiny bit off. This tip will eliminate that issue. One question though, if you are moving the pocket up should you lengthen the pocket so the cards do not overlap? Thank you for great informative videos. I am learning so much.
This is such a great approach. I’ll test it out straight away. Thanks!
Thanks, dude! Let me know how it goes!
What French Edger do you use, recommend? Thank you for the tips. This is great stuff!
Love the idea, I make them a little different, but am going to give this a try!
Thanks! Everyone develops their own style. This is just what I found works for me. The video was just me having fun with it, but are a lot of good ways to do anything in this craft.
If this works it will solve one my most dreaded problems..ive shyed away from bifolds and non-wrap designs because of this problem. Going to give it a try!! Thanks!
Let me know how it goes!
Awesome, thank you
Well I didn’t have a problem with the “normal” stacking method with the potential gap until now! Thanks for that! 🤣 I’m going to give this a try while at the same time not let the gap bug me too much.
Bwahahaha sorry! 😂
LOVE THIS!!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME IDEA!!!!!!!
Thank YOU for watching!
Have to agree this is a better way I will change this this method in future. Thanks.
leather craft here, agree with you.. and also i did boxy rounded on bottom t slot, not taper
I must admit I did have to double check if this video was posted on April 1st!
I can see what you are saying, but doesn’t stacking closer together make it harder to remove the cards from the wallet?
I’ll certainly give it a try, but I’m doubtful.
I've never had a problem with that at all except when I jam about 5 cards in one slot which I'm notoriously bad for in my owm wallets haha
Very informative. I didn’t know this !
Give it a shot, dude! The video was just more or less me having fun with it. This is what works for me, but there are a ton of great ways to do anything in Leather craft.
Do you have an online shop? How do we see/buy your work?
Thanks for the solution to this
Video quality improved a lot !
Thank you so much! I'm always trying to make it better! I appreciate the kind words!
Agree with you..first timer see it at other video, as a tailor i already thought about it..wont it be gap there?😂😂😂😂
Great idea. Thanks!
Thank you!!
Im going to start doing this
I’m new to leather working and only working with chrome. Is it possible to skive chrome enough? Thanks.
Skiving chrome isn't an issue. Just make sure your knife is sharp. The issue with chrome is its difficult to burnish.
Thanks for watching!
Tim, great pocket video. That gap bothers me, too. I'm switching to your way, sensei!
This is the way!
The problem with this solution becomes that of card slot creep. If you're going to advance T slots into overlapping positions to avoid 'slot gap', you're materially moving ALL the card slots upward, which results in an ill fitting final C slot at the bottom with leftover space. To make this method resolve properly, you'll be left measuring and cutting C slots individually, which means more time and inconsistencies. My personal solution to avoiding 'slot gap' has been avoiding sharp angles altogether. Cut your T slots in curves and they become less cringe to the eye. Happy crafting everyone!
An excellent point. I definitely should have mentioned this. Thank you.
Hi, can you explain more of cutting T slots in curves? I can't picture it in my head
@@halorayhan Sorry to be late in response. Imagine your pocket 'T slot.' Now imagine cutting the inner corners into upside down 'J's' . The under slots are rounded and become less evident when you stack the card battery. Close becomes 'good enough' provided there isn't a gap between the tops of the tabs as you stack them.
I guessed that Ira is from somewhere in the US north-west... he is so like a British goofball (as in McKenzie in Detectorists). well, he is from British Columbia 😃
Is it harder to get the cards out with the thinner opening?
I haven't found it to be. One trick you can do to make sure they fit nicely is put a card or two in the slot as you're gluing it down. It gives you just enough slack to make sure it'll fit cards really nicely. I think I picked that trick up from Mascon Leather and it works really well.
Thank you hagrid
Hahaha you're welcome 😂
Perfecto bien echo
Nice! Thanks man
Any time!
I'm definitely going to try this
Please do! Let me know how it goes!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods I'll tag you on Instagram
I've been thinking about this. What are the measurements of your t-pockets? How tall are the tabs?
I've been playing with the sizes a bit recently but I'll measure later and get back to you. I can't remember off-hand.
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods was wondering about an answer. Hope you have a great New Years!
Hey, Doug! Sorry, brother I completely forgot! My t-slots are 4" x 2.25". Sometimes I do cut them just a bit wider for trim allowance, but that's how big they are on my templates.
The tab itself is 0.6" tall.
Happy New Year!
I think I will add a eighth of a inch to my t'slots tabs
Thought everyone did this. The only difference I make from your method is to skive the entire T-flap of the lower pockets and just half the T on the top one so the entire wallet has the same flat thickness on the edge.
I'll give that a shot!
Niice.
Thanks Tim... But with Vachetta, its hard to align 😥😥😥
I was just playing around with this video, dude. Mostly just hoping to get a laugh and show my method. I'm sure there are better ways out there.
I've actually never worked with vachetta! What makes it hard to align?!
Hi there, excellent tip. But this way there is like a wave like pattern on the edge, so not a srtaight line. By skiveing the top of the bottom T slot, this could be eliminiated... just like when you do a keeper for a belt or a watch strap. But this is simply theory crafting at this point. Nontheless, this is way better than having the black hole between the slots. Nice job :-) ..... or you could just simply use a laser cutter and do it like that... the budge friendly way :D
Hahaha the "black hole". I love that. Good point about skiving the top of the bottom one. I'm going to give that a shot.
Great video!
Thanks, brother! And thanks for watching even though it's way outside your niche!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods you are sharing your passion and knowledge while educating others. That is who we hope to highlight! 😊
Thanks buddy! Trying to do my part! And I like doing CZcams so it's becoming a good fit.
Looks like you need a bell skiver my man, saw another person mention str method, defs check that out, he just skives the tab of the t slots so that they kind of interlock
I 100% need a bell skiver! It's on the list!
I'll definitely be checking out his method. Is there a specific video?
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods ah I can’t remember the name, I don’t think it was specifically about that technique
Ah well I'll dig through his videos. He does good work anyway, it'll be good to watch all his content.
Lol, tat is funny, just say the line!!! Thanks
The problem with these things is the distances so that each credit card is the same distance apart!!
It didn't bother me. But now it does Dang you lol
Hahaha sorry 😂
Same here 😅😂
That's how I like to do it ...when I'm not messing them up.
i think "slot gap" is pretty overblown. If you actually talk to regular customers they have zero idea that it even exists and would never point it out as an issue/flaw. Half of my job with folks coming in is to even show them that "t-slots" exist. This method is cool, and might be useful if you're making a wallet for $600+, but anything less then that it can add hours of unnecessary work/cost that customers don't want to pay for.
That's a fair point. It definitely adds time. I'm working on a custom long wallet right now that has 14 t slots total and it definitely is proving to be a ton of added work.
Thanks for watching!
I have to agree and disagree. I agree that overlapping the slots make card slots much nicer but I disagree with your method. I suggest having a look at STR Handmade's video, I think it's a much better way. 😁
Thanks for watching!
I'll definitely go take a look! I love STR's videos. Is there a specific one?
STR HANDMADE method is here:

Thank you! That method is super slick! I'm going to try it for sure!
Tim: Instead of skiving almost the entire pocket, can you just make it out of thinner leather? If you use 3oz for the body, how about 2oz for the pockets. Just asking.
Oh you 100% can. I did that recently on a small cardholder and it worked great!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods I just tried it over the weekend with a Stock and Barrel pattern. I switched the T-Pocket to your overlap suggestion to try it. (forgot to skive the overlap so I have a bump) Used 2oz for insides. 3oz for the outside. Seems to work really well. Always trying something new.
Am new to leather craft and this what i do and it's really not my thing too it looks sloppy and the gab something 👀
I have thrown away many wallets because of that gap
As have I! 😂
More better!!🙋🏼♀️
