One of my great uncles had a Jim Dandy like that, he had a large garden. He also had a trout pound that you could pay to fish. He used it as a mower, tiller like that and also had a plow blade and chains for tires.

That thing is pretty awesome. My grandparents had a house on a farm and for the home area they kept a Simplicity mower. It had 3 point on the back and a PTO on the front for a plow or whatever. That thing was NOT a riding mower, it technically was a small home tractor. It was kind of like that, maybe a little smaller, but man that thing was SO cool. I learned to operate a tractor on that thing as a little kid. Same idea as a full sized big farm tractor just in a personal sized package. I was SO sad when they let that go. I really really wanted to keep it but I was still a kid and it was shot due to getting damp and it was old and beat up. Oh well.

  • @jeffroberts532
    @jeffroberts532 Před rokem +8

Very nice acquisition! That tractor was made to last a lifetime & then some. I remember helping my grandfather till his gardens with a walk behind. It would cut the earth maybe 4 to 6 inches deep. Probably closer to 4, I was a kid. I was interested in the worms & grubs that would be churned up so I could use them for fishing in the pond. Great memories!
I’d suggest making a shroud for the front pulleys & belt because if you are planning on running through weeds or brush they are likely to get caught. I noticed this almost happened with a small branch as you were test driving. 🚜

Very cool. I'm sold on the use of these small tractors for garden and home use. I have 2 small tractors. One is a 1965 Sears continental 10 and the other is a 1966 Sears continental 12. The 1965 has been heavily modified and raised. The 1966 is somewhat stock with the exception of a newer, smaller engine. I have a good number of attachments for both, but no tiller. That's an option I wouldn't mind having. This summer I'll be putting on hydraulics on the 1965 (changed the engine to a 18hp twin cylinder for more power). Future plans will be to build a bucket for this tractor.

Might be rare where you're from but I see those little garden tactors quite a bit. I'm not too familiar with Jim Dandy but it looks like an off brand Allis which I know fairly well and I'm sure you could use those attachments on this little tractor on it as well, as long as it meets the HP requirements. 1000% sure that's a different engine 90% of them from 1940 to 1970 came with Wisconsin's. That little arm on the right side of the engine with 2 springs on it is the governor and unless you want to replace that engine I'd hook that up ASAP, may have to make a connection with a coat hanger that goes from the throttle to one of those holes on the governor bar, that will regulate the RPM so it doesn't float the valves. In an old engine like that you don't want more than 3500 RPM..ask me how I know lol. I would also replace that front pully for the PTO with something else or you could run the risk of destroying every belt you put on, that pully is meant for pull starting the engine, there are other pulleys that do have the notches to keep the pull start but you can also wire wheel the grooves to make them fairly smooth, I've had that issue on a 1943 model..belt failed at high RPM and destroyed the grill and PTO. Those PTOs are not cheap to replace andor rebuild.
Side note..I'm giving you my best advice on how to work on these old machines, in no way am I TELLING you, I've been watching you for a while now and I don't agree how you do certain things but everyone works on things differently and at their own pace. I see there are plenty that TELL you what you should do and I don't care to add to them. I will say there are better places to get the information you need for most of the machines you have/buy. I would not trust the comments THAT much lol. Just some friendly advice.

I would have bought too! The tiller works great! I'm surprised it has no highth adjustment. If it were mine, I'd likely restore it even if it has a replacement engine and use it regularly just for the old-school cool factor! Another awesome find, in my opinion! Good stuff buddy!!

Great find! My uncle worked for Briggs and scrap iron for 30+ years. Those engines were not designed to rev like that. they run at a moderate speed then when load is required they rev up using the governor. running them at high speed causes them to blow up, but you have no doubt found that out already. What a cool tractor, so simple, would be so much fun to restore.

The way to make these machines work is with a few passes, digging a bit deeper with each pass. By the time you've made your third or fourth pass, you'd have a good six inches or more of a finely tilled loam ready for just about any crop you'd care to plant.
Add the cultivators and these little tractors can stay in the field until the plants are a good 12-16" tall, knocking weeds down to cut down competition for light and nutrients. By the time they're that tall, your crops pretty much own the field and even though the tractor can't do much more for them, it's done a lot.

Cool machine! I've seen many of those at the antique tractor and engine shows - some people collect those (like the Struck dozer). I don't think the governor is working as it should - it may be reaching higher RPM's than it was designed for. It may be easier to control the speed and tiller RPM with the governor working. I like the blank look on the front - reminds me of the cartoon movie "Robots".

Way cool I have a 1974, with a kohler, 3 speed, has hydraulics to raise and lower deck and rear lift arms. Has a 60 inch deck, with blades that run the opposite, not sure about that guy. Yep real cool man. Good find, have fun with it. I learned the hard way with the spindles, done draw the nuts down to tight as they are tapered bearings. You betcha seized the thing up ruined shafts.

Great find Joe! Ironically, that brand is now a toy maker, a brewery, an Oregon drive in movie..

Nice find, I think I would have the tiller spinning in the opposite direction, running much slower, and adjusting the height on each run.
I would also drive much slower, stop the tiller at the end of each run, turn and then start again.

I was going to say that ad well. With the tines spinning that direction, I bet it would till better in reverse.

Your over reving the motor, they only run at 3350 rpm for max. Also pick a lower gear for tilling so it has a chance to turn some ground.

Dual transmissions would make it till better. Better gear options. Mine has dual trans and that thing is as slow as a snail in the lowest gears

I really want an old Ford 8N or Jubilee but then again I think that something with 4x4, diesel, and a belly mower deck would be more practical for my place. P.F. Engineering has some nice plans for a front loader and mini backhoe that can be adapted for small garden tractors and I'd like that as well.
