    This is how you get into Goldman Sachs. Double major in economics and finance from an Ivy League school with a 3.7 gpa and about 4 internships related to banking on your resume.

    Coming from a bit of a target school myself, the school isn't just a name on a resume. For one, upper year students and school clubs can help you cultivate the perfect resume. They give you all the possible questions you need for an interview, and help you do mocks to prepare. Teachers and alumni's often refer people just because you guys go to the same school and had a nice coffee chat. It's a lot easier than being from a small school where everything is trial and error.

I go to an average school, my parents worked in food service, and I don’t have any IB experience at all - yet I made it to GS. Sometimes it’s just casting a wide net and all it takes is one recruiter who believes you have potential. Keep your head up!

    A lot is interviewing well, knowing your resume, and telling powerful, albeit super short stories. The interviewer will really be able to assess if you went through a lot. Your hard work will show! I read a post about somebody that worked at mcdonalds and it was amazing what they said they learned there. Much more than flipping burgers... Good luck! I spent the first 7 years of my career at Goldman, when it was a private partnership until just after its IPO. It’s a great institution because of the fantastic people that work there. What I learned there and the people I met have been absolutely critical to my career success. My business partner also spent 7 years at GS and we overlapped although we never met. I find that having GS work experience in common with someone is a positive and the alumni network is strong, as strong as any university’s, such as the network from UPenn which is my alma mater.

    • @MMmm-bg9li
      @MMmm-bg9li Před 5 lety

      Agreed. Great to hear about such a positive experience. It seems to me that at the end of the day, companies’ like Goldman have a culture that one can either adapt and thrive in or become disillusioned and upset and fail. I think it’s up to the person themselves.

    • @juanalva6894
      @juanalva6894 Před 5 lety +5

      @@MMmm-bg9li I think most people underestimate how critically important it is to choose a firm with the right culture for you. I was fortunate to have worked at Goldman and at another Wall Street firm during my summers at college. I chose GS because I thought the culture fit me better although the other firm was offering more money. I thought if I took the money, that was a short term sugar high but the more long lasting benefit would come from working at the firm where I fit in best.

    This video is obsolete, I know kids from state schools getting hired at Goldman Sachs right out of school these days. Perhaps it has something to do with the reduced standards for admissions at top schools, but it seems like the playing field has been leveled, at least to some extent. It's really not surprising when you think about how many smart kids grew up the product of the public school system because their parents couldn't afford to send them to $20k/yr Ivy League feeder prep schools. These kids are just as bright as their private school counterparts, but because of a lack of money, they end up in a state school and top companies and investment banks are realizing that. The games that top schools are playing with admissions requirements now are already beginning to bite them. I sincerely hope that Harvard continues race-based hiring practices and ignoring SAT scores, it will truly bring class-based equality closer to reality in this country after more than a century of playing kingmaker to society at large.
