    As for what the song "Dogs" is about - generally, it's about businessmen...working your way up the corporate ladder, stabbing people in the back, and ending up retired in a southern climate (like Florida), and dying. The entire album is loosely based on a book called "Animal Farm." The different animals in the book represent different walks of life...different social and economic groups. Dogs are the corporate world, Pigs represent the ruling class, and the Sheep - that's us...the general population. That's a VERY loose interpretation - look up the book Animal Farm and you'll better be able to relate to the songs on this album. "Pigs On The Wing" - that's a reference to and old saying "...when pigs fly" - meaning, something that is unlikely to ever happen.

    • @psbarrow
      @psbarrow Před 3 lety +6

      "Pigs on the wing" was a love song to Waters' (then) new wife, and "on the wing" is a fighter pilot expression that enemy aircraft are approaching. So she's his shelter from those who would do him harm.

    • @krkhns
      @krkhns Před 3 lety +1

      @@psbarrow According to Nick Mason in Nick Schaffner's book, its not so much about her being his shelter from those that would harm him, but about her ability to hold her own with him as an equal intellectually, protecting him from those he saw as intellectually inferior to him. As Mason put it, you have "...to be very good with semantics to win an argument with Roger". Roger felt Carolyne was one of the few people that truly understood his views and was able to argue both sides of the coin with him. You have to remember the time frame the song was written in. It was the period where Rogers felt no one respected or appreciated his music. To the point that he spit on a concert goer during the tour for the album. "Zig zagging our way through the boredom and pain" - how he felt their life would be if she wasn't able to hold her own with him. "So, I don't feel alone, or the weight of the stone" - someone finally understands me and I don't have to carry this weight that maybe the problem of no one understanding me is because no one does.

    • @psbarrow
      @psbarrow Před 3 lety

      @@krkhns That doesn't really fit the lyrics, though. Waters himself said that the first part is asking "“Where would I be without you?” while the second verse says, “In the face of all this other shit-confusion, sidetracks, difficulties-you care, and that makes it possible to survive.” They're Waters' own words (quoted on p.549 of Jean-Michel Guesdon. “Pink Floyd All the Songs").

    • @krkhns
      @krkhns Před 3 lety

      @@psbarrow It doesn't fit as you interpret it. I can name about 25 songs that seem to have a glaringly obvious meaning that isn't the meaning at all. It is a love song to Carloyne, but the majority is about her being his equal and is what motivated him to write it. He felt without the song, the album would be a single piece of rage. He wanted something to create some type of balance so he broke the song in two and bookended it on the album. Read the book Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey, pages 216-219, the section about Pigs on the Wing. In the 15 years since published, neither Mason nor Waters has contradicted the Mason quotes. If it were wrong, you'd at least expect Mason to say something since it is him being quoted and referenced.

    • @psbarrow
      @psbarrow Před 3 lety

      @@krkhns I quoted the guy who wrote it, you don't. You're quoting Mason (who didn't write the lyrics), making general remarks about Waters' relationship with her and the song's structure (which I'm not questioning), and I don't expect members of Floyd to go around correcting each other over every song. I'll repeat what Waters said specifically about the song in an interview, where the first verse asks: "“Where would I be without you?” while the second verse says, “In the face of all this other shit-confusion, sidetracks, difficulties-you care, and that makes it possible to survive.”
      If you want to keep arguing about it, I suggest you take it up with Waters (not me) and point out to him that he's wrong about what he wrote.

    Dogs is a masterpiece. The first section is like a training manual for getting ahead in business, if you’re willing to do whatever it takes. It’s all about becoming the Big Dog. You want to hate that persona, the guy who just pushes career until he’s alone and bitter and you feel like, good riddance. But THEN, the second half of the song is the reveal: the dog was just a pawn to the REAL owners: the pigs. The alpha male is really just being used, used up almost literally. He doesn’t realize it until the end-he thought he was rising up the ladder, but he was just doing the work for the real money men. And suddenly you feel nothing but sympathy for the same character you hated! I only figured this out recently while watching someone else react to this, so a) don’t feel bad if it doesn’t come to you bc it took me literally 30 years, and b) feel great that your reactions help other people learn and grow right along with you, even if they know the song. Peace!

      After 4 decades of listening and experiencing this music, I find new insights into the landscape of the band every time I break out the old vinyl. Pink Floyd is probably destined to always be pertinent, because it seems that although it's poignant in it's retrospect, as time goes on we see that it was prophetic at the same time. Just an FYI - you will here Floyd refer to the "stone" on several albums. The "stone" is the weight of life's pressures. "Dragged down by the stone" = "dragged down by the pressures and challenges of life". On the album The Wall (Hey You) - "Will you help me to carry the stone?" = "Will you help me navigate life's pressures?"

    From Wikipedia: Fitting into the album's Orwellian concept of comparing human behavior to various animals, "Dogs" concentrates on the aggressive, ruthlessly competitive world of business, describing a high-powered businessman. The first two verses detail his predatory nature - outwardly charming and respectable with his "club tie and a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile", while behind this facade he lies waiting "to pick out the easy meat...to strike when the moment is right", and to stab those who trust him in the back. Subsequent verses portray the emptiness of his existence catching up to him as he grows older, retiring to the south rich but unloved: "just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer", and drowning under the weight of a metaphorical stone.
    The final verse explores a number of aspects of business life and how it compares to dogs, for example taking chances and being "trained not to spit in the fan", losing their individuality ("broken by trained personnel"), obeying their superiors ("fitted with collar and chain"), being rewarded for good behaviour ("given a pat on the back"), working harder than the other workers ("breaking away from the pack") and getting to know everyone but spending less time with family ("only a stranger at home"). Recommended by a friend of Roger Waters named Joel Eaves, this line was personal to him as he was split from his family at infancy, being "broken away", as he put it. He later joined the Air Force squadron known as "Wolfpack", which directly inspired the implementation of this line.

    Glad to see you decided to review the entire album at once and not song by song. Most Pink Floyd was meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Hearing PF on the radio almost always leaves me feeling cheated.
    I love seeing yours and people in general's reaction to hearing PF for the first time. You made a comment in one of your videos that it was not what you expected and you thought it would be hard heavy metal rock or something to that effect. That is what my Mom thought too back in the late 1970's until one time I took her somewhere and popped in the cassette deck in my car Dark Side Of The Moon. I had it cranked up pretty loud and she sat there and listened to the whole thing and did not ask me to turn it down and did not say a word. When it was over she said who was that? They are very good and I enjoyed it. When I told her who it was she thought I was lying. LOL Same goes for The Grateful Dead. Most people think they are heavy metal who never heard them. Todays Country music makes The Dead sound like a church choir.

    Good reaction. I really had to really focus on being patient because I like this song and really dig people reacting to it. You did a really good balance with pausing sometimes so you can tell us where you're at with it, but not too much pausing. Hey, you're giving your honest reaction and I can see that you were getting into the tune. One word of caution and it's not negative. Just be careful with Pink Floyd because they leave lots of space between the notes to give the music a chance to really breathe. Some time go back and listen to Pink Floyd and note the spaces between the notes. There's alot there in the spaces if you're into musical patterns if that makes sense. (I don't really mean that there is music in between the notes...I'm saying that they leave space between the notes or let the notes last a long time so it has depth) Anyway thanks for doing this reaction. I've said this before in other reactions but back in the day when Pink Floyd debuted this album in 77 there were no distractions. And when I talk about distractions I mean cell phones, video games, DVD players, computers Etc we had none of that! If you were lucky you had a TV with five or six channels and a record player or maybe a cassette player and that was it! If you wanted to see a movie you had to go to a theater if you wanted to play video games you had to go to an arcade. So long songs with stories once you started it that's all you had to do was listen to that music. Some FM stations played with a called album Rock and would play long songs! Also even if you had a TV you were lucky if you had a 27 inch screen and that was a big one! Plus in 1977 not everybody even had a color TV it was black and white for many!!

    Animals was one of the most underrated albums when it was released. Remember, this followed Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here (1973 & 1975 respectively). Those are some big shoes to fill. While I liked it in 1977 because it was Pink Floyd, I didn't appreciate the masterful touch until the mid-2000s. I really only liked Pigs (Three Different Ones). I'm going to comment as I always do about this particular Pink Floyd album.
    The thing that makes animals stand out from some of the other great Pink Floyd albums is it is just the band. Floyd had just purchased a new studio and wanted to get back to basics. This album is unique because there is no Orchestra, no saxophone, no background singers, No guest vocalists, there is only bass, guitar, keyboards, and drums.
    Each animal is a human personality type. The dog is the ruthless businessman, the pig is the politician, sheep are the rest of society doing what is expected of them.

  • @TheBlackQueen
    @TheBlackQueen Před 3 lety +1

    This entire album is a parody of George Orwell's book Animal Farm, of which looks at Communism in the Soviet Union through the analogy of animals. This album, however, is a critique on Capitalism but uses the same imagery of Orwell's book. This is thus called an "Orwellian Work".
    Pigs On The Wing is just a love song Roger Waters wrote for his wife.
    Dogs details the sneaky businessmen who use sharp tactics to present, convince, and ultimately backstab other businessmen. This was the most notable use of their signature reference to "the Stone", in which one is often held or pulled down by. In the old day (and possibly still today), when a dog was too old to be of use, they were brought on a boat, tied to a chain with a big weight, often a stone, and thrown into the water to pull them down and drown them. In this song, it's used to represent a businessmen who makes so many sharp deals that they eventually come back around to bite him in the back. You make so many commitments and overlook loopholes that others will use against you. This happens to people all the time, no matter how rich they can get. It just happened to Taylor Swift and her catelogue.

    I give you huge kudos for reacting and being so respctful of music which is not really your choice. I have tried repeatedly to listen to a couple of the bands who get the most praise, I won't name them as I got some serious abuse on one thread. Anyway, these two bands have been around as long as PF and Led Zeppelin, my favourites, and they both leave me cold. I listen for a while, then reach the end of my tether. I can, like you, hear the expertise and talent but I just have to switch off or I'll do some damage to my psyche. I admire your patience. Bless you.

    In the mid-1970s, the punk movement criticized the old rock groups for becoming too commercial and no longer denouncing abuses by governments, the system and other authorities. This album is in a way the response of Roger Waters (lyricist) to the criticisms emanating from the punk movement, and more particularly, certain punk groups including: the (The Sex Pistols), (The Clash) or (The Damned), to the point of finding Johnny Rotten (The Sex Pistols) walking Carnaby Street flanked by an "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt.

Pink Floyd are the Gods of Prog, but for more concept album type stuff you can check out bands like Marillion, Yes, Riverside, Roger Waters (his solo stuff away from Floyd) and a whole host of others ... btw the Pig flying over Battersea Power Station album cover was actually done for real, it's a photograph. The giant inflatable pig tether broke (supposedly) and the pig floated off, causing chaos with aircraft circling for Heathrow airport, the largest airport in the London area, it was regarded as a major aviation incident at the time, all over the news channels, "giant inflatable pig brings major airport to a standstill", making it really great publicity for the album!.

    Yes, genesis (phil collins of recent re-fame), king crimson.
    Re lyrics: animals was themed around Orwell animal farm
    Roger waters divided people into 3 kinds (for the album) pigs (rulers and cops) dogs (managers and overseers for pigs) and sheep (followers).
    The acoustic short pigs on the wing, parts 1 n 2 were a love song of sorts added to give the album some warmth.

    Pink Floyd broke Society into 3 basic groups....Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep.
    Dogs are the loners who will do anything to get ahead, and out of self-preservation, at the cost of alienating everyone else.
    Pigs are the elitists who use, manipulate, and abuse anyone to keep themselves above all else. Loosely based on Animal Farm, since they use Dogs to keep themselves in power.
    Sheep are the those, who are subjugated to be the fodder for the Dogs and Pigs, but since they are the largest in number, can crush their overlords if they choose to organize and fight back. That's us.
    Hence...they have described the hierarchy of virtually every country in the world.

  • @TheBlackQueen

    I get not wanting to get too deep in the lyrics and just being there to vibe to the music, but with Pink Floyd and many bands, their lyrics are important to the music, ESPECIALLY on the next album The Wall, which many will tell you needs to be heard all the way through.
    When you do The Wall (which oughta be the last full PF album reaction since the rest aren't concept albums), you'll need the lyrics up to understand the music. They built that entire album off of a story and the music tells the story just as much as the lyrics, but you need both. If you need help, there are plenty of websites and blogs that breakdown the lyrics for each song so you don't have to dig too deep.

    The song is about the different types of people in general life, for example, in your country, you may have heard someone referred to as a dog, perhaps someone who, cynically use people for their own benefit! I hope this is helpful, just, when you are listening to a lot of Roger Waters lyrics, he is quite a cynical, left leaning,( politics wise) man, whose father died during World War two. He is not to everyone's taste, but i think you will find, all the Pink Floyd albums, where he the main contributor, ( and i mean all the ones before and including "The Final cut") the music is simply brilliant. His musical writing is the next level! And ever since Roger Waters left the band, and especially since Richard Wright died, i personally believe that the magic they possessed as an outfit, is lost for any future collaborations as a group! Btw, when they first started, which was 2 years before my birth, Syd Barrett was the main creative driver of the group, if you listen to any of their music from this time, it is totally different, with Waters not being so overbearing, but still adding imput. A lot of that earlier stuff cannot be properly appreciated, without a little, ha ha, chemical enhancement! Unfortunately, Syd developed schizophrenia around 1968 -- 70 and was forced from the group! For what it's worth, being an artist myself, i believe great art can sometimes come from suffering, and also having schizophrenia, and been through a lot, i feel an affinity with Waters, because, apart from also being cynical, my father was also in WW2 but he survived and was very abusive. I still am living with the trauma now! Not that my level of talent is not to the level of Waters. You can check my art out at my Instagram account #peterkiilart and even Michael Collins of Apollo eleven fame has liked some of my work, you would have to find a rectangular shaped drawing of a portal, into a bar/pub! And one after that! I hope this comment is useful to someone!

    • @peterkiil6691
      @peterkiil6691 Před 3 lety

      Of course all art can be open to interpretation, well should be, unless a definte message is aimed for!! Love your channel, btw, i just wish i was young again, like you! So much to discover, and i wish i was as positive as you! I guess i am jaded! On Roger Waters, though, if you manage to read a bit about during their tours of the US in the 70s ,well after animals had come out, once they were on stage in Montreal, and the crowd were very rowdy and throwing firecrackers on the stage, Waters was getting more and more furious, and one fan starting running at the stage, and climbed screen fencing, separating the band from the crowd, and Roger screamed at him and spat in his face. The security took him away, and the band went backstage and regrouped later on, so at that point of the bands history, Waters was totally sick of touring, even, at one point, making a phone call to his wife, in the U.K., and some strange man answered! Well, at the end of all this drama, and the end of the seventies, Waters was inspired by the fact, that he could separate himself from the crowd, who could be intrusive to the performance, by literally building a wall, so that's what led to The Walls genesis! Also, Waters solo stuff is brilliant too, he truly is a masterful musician! The years of touring the Animals album were so traumatic to the band, and brings up so many bad memories, that i do not think they perform any of the tracks from the record, these days in the modern 'Pink Floyd "! Also, when Waters left the group, he tried to stop the band from keeping using the same name!
