I learned this in schools in Puerto Rico’s that the American civil war was fought over the economic systems. The north had the textile industry and the southern states had raw materials. The south wanted textiles jobs too because the end product gained more production and profit for the northern economies and communities

The majority of both parties were conservative until the 1960's. The free sex, drugs and "if it feels good do it" of the 60's is a result of or maybe caused too rapid change of society. The disaster of Vietnam and Watergate destroyed any trust in authority, and rightly so. Basically conservatives do not want rapid or drastic change and liberals constantly seek rapid and drastic change, even if that change damages or destroys society, government and established functional systems.
