As a lawyer, I definitely relate to "Dogs" as a song about lawyers. Lol. I think it represents the professional class in between the Pigs at the top and the sheep at the bottom. They are trapped in a "dog eat dog" world, if you will.

I remain ever grateful to have been turned onto this genius song at 20 years old. They really lay it down clear. "Gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused. Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used. Gotta stay awake, got and try to shake off this creeping malaise. If I don't stand my own ground, how will I find my way out of this maze?" These are wisdom teachings. Pay attention y'all.

The saying, "Pigs will fly the day....(such & such)...happens", means that thing (whatever you're thinking of), will most likely never happen. So, watching for pigs on the wing means you're hoping for a very unusual & unlikely change in things or events to happen. For the world to change for the better amidst the "boredom & pain". ✌🏻

I took my iPod shuffle with Pink Floyd's Animals on it along and spent the whole night lying in a freezing pool of water listening to Dogs. :)

While listening to this with you it takes me back to February of 1977 when I was privileged to see Pink Floyd in their Prime play this entire album "animals" take a short break then play the entire "Wish You Were Here" album, disappear for a few minutes and come out and play three songs off of "Dark Side Of the Moon" for their encore!! I still have a Hanging On by a thread hope that they filmed this concert back in '77 and they're hiding it for a 50-year release or something! Because it was a phenomenal concert!! I've seen these guys four times, once in 74 for their Dark Side of the Moon tour and that 1977 "In the Flesh" tour that I just spoke of and I saw them in '87 and 94 for The Division Bell Tour. But I have to tell you that 1977 concert was probably the best of the four because they were really on that night and I still hope to God they filmed it because what a terrible thing to lose when it comes to Art if they didn't film it!! I still remember people passing out right and left because of the intensity of the concert and probably a few other things added to their metabolism but what a magnificent concert that was!! I remember driving home from that concert with my then-girlfriend who later became my wife and neither one of us spoke all the way home we were just I guess in shock or in AWE or both???

I read a British commenter explain that long ago in rural England there was nearly always a dog or dogs on a farm and they were seen simply as tools to help with livestock, not pets.
When these dogs grew old and no longer useful, they would often be brought to a pond/river and tossed in with a heavy stone tied to them. Hence "dragged down by the stone".

If you ever get the chance to listen to it, definitely do it Helene. It's not a concept album but was recorded as a soundtrack to a French film called "La Valee". IMO, the second half is better than the first but it's all Floyd at their creative best. Childhood's End (words and music by David, and based on the story of the same name) really sounds like the forerunner to Time. They remixed it for their Early Years box set so there's a 2016 version as well. It gives the album a totally different tone and both versions are worth delving into. The chilling thing about Animals Farm, the novel, is that the animals rose up against their oppressors and became just like them. What does that say about how things are in this samsaric world?

The acoustic rhythm guitar is played (by Gilmour) in drop-D tuning. Gives it a darker,
more ominous vibe while still strikingly beautiful to the ears.
You've discovered what makes Floyd...well, Floyd. It's all the "little" things that go seemingly unnoticed yet add so much to the overall composition and atmosphere.
Also, as you aptly pointed out, Roger Waters wrote some of the most poignant, gut-wrenching lyrics, yet somehow they managed to fit them into some of the most compelling music ever recorded.
It's ironic that you mentioned the middle synth-heavy section sounded like a "bad acid trip." My first listen to this album (in 1978) coincided with my very first acid trip (thankfully, a very good one) as a young lad who knew nothing of the Floyd until someone dropped this mind-melting masterwork on the turntable. All present at that experience just closed our eyes and held on for dear life as the Floyd took us far, far away.

I love the self titled sebum but About Face is my least favorite Gilmour solo album. It's just my opinion though. There are still a couple great songs on it like Murder and Let's Get Metaphysical. Near the End is good too. On the whole it just feels a little too 80s pop and less like Gilmour's usual work, at least to me. Definitely still worth a listen for anyone who hasn't heard it yet though!

I remember, I think it was in 9th or 10th grade, back in the early 60’s, having to read Animal Farm and write an essay on it. It was one of the most studied books in English class in American schools back then, during the Cold War, as it is a blistering condemnation of communism. ( All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others). I have honestly not devoted much time to the lyrics of this album, but it seems that Waters has taken the idea of animals representing people in society, but turned it into a excoriating critique of capitalism.

Syed, the line 'pigs on the wing' is Waters own adaption of a very common phrase used to describe an outcome that is impossible. When someone makes what is perceived to be a preposterously bold claim they may receive the scoffing reply 'Yeah, when pigs fly!" or "...and pigs can fly!"

"Dogs" concentrates on the aggressive, ruthlessly competitive world of business, describing a high-powered businessman. The first two verses detail his predatory nature - outwardly charming and respectable with his "club tie and a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile", while behind this façade he lies waiting "to pick out the easy meat...to strike when the moment is right", and to stab those who trust him in the back. Subsequent verses portray the emptiness of his existence catching up to him as he grows older, retiring to the south rich but unloved: "just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer", and drowning under the weight of a metaphorical stone.

As Dave does his guitar solos, you can hear a call a response (with a guitar overdub done afterward) between the main solo, and a quieter, further off guitar echoing in the distance. Slap back echo (short delay) done on the vocals for some snap, and edge, and gentle key chords in the background. Plus those Ringo style drum fills.

Pink Floyd are arguably the greatest band of the modern era. Their music is high art, and is genius on so many different levels that it sets them apart from almost all other great bands.
Have you considered extending your appreciation of good music to vocal artists who use their voices as incredible instruments to transmit strongly and mess with your mind. Try these as an introduction:
