I saw Ultravox in concert on March of 1979 when I was 23 at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in West Hollywood, California with John Foxx and guitarist Robin Simon. The band that opened up for them I do believe they called themselves The Dolphins. When Ultravox came on stage the to do the first song, the power shut down, due to the fact there was a massive rain storm from up the West Central Coast where I still reside and drove down there to see them, and it was pounding rain driving down there. Each time the power went back on, and Ultravox was starting play again, the power just kept shutting down. I thought their concert performance was going to be canceled. But no, the power finally went back on and stayed on throughout their concert performance. I was up front of the middle of the stage and I raised my right hand as high as I could while John Foxx was singing, and he lowered himself a bit down, and gave me a "five" with his left hand. The only song I remember that John Foxx sang that stormy night was "Touch and Go" which that he recorded on his 1980 debut solo album 'Metamatic'. His movements while singing "Touch and Go" was very cool and impressive. I will never forget that.
Part 2??

Systems of Romance is a classic.
indeed. 100%. Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
On Broadway solo sheer genius and perfection.
Incredible Sinth played on that
It STILL knocks me out, that solo. It makes you stop in your tracks and absorb it.
Is incredible !!
Agree 100%. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Great shout! And thank you for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
Billy Curry on Systems of Romance was a force of electronic grandeur
Well said. 100%. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Being a young teen with Ultravox!, Magazine and Simple Minds producing astonishing albums seemingly every 6 months was mind-blowing. Great times.
Indeed it was. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
RIP Chris Cross 😢
Definitely. So sad. MW
Warren Cann would be a great candidate for an interview. 😉
Agree. We'd love to get the mighty Warren Cann. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
100%! thanks for watching the electronic cafe -Andy
Yes. Apparently, he wrote most of the lyrics for the Vienna LP (apart from the title track, of course) which to my mind are much more interesting and subtle than those of later albums. I'd love to see him interviewed.
Oooh yes, such a hunk. Please
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xxyou can say that again. The lyrics on the Cannless Uvox are pure trite
Bloody legend.
100%. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Billy needs to write an autobiography.
Without doubt. I’d love that. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Billy’s solo on Numan’s Every day I die is just superb, nobody else ever came close to it after he’d left
Indeed. Great comment. Thanks for sharing and watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Billy’s solo on Everyday I Die? 🤔 You must be referring to the ‘79 version, which to me was nothing compared to ‘80 version which was played by Roger Mason. That one was superb. Couldn’t be matched on the ‘81 version either as Roger wasn’t there.
But wat was truly outstanding was Billy Currie’s solo on On Broadway… 👍🏻
@@andrefokkema Yep the On Broadway solo still gives me shivers after all this time.
Billy was immense in ultravox
Without doubt. 100%. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Systems of Romance, Top,Top album.
Indeed it is. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
agree =one of my all time faves- thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
A delightfully unassuming man of such influence. The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned, Hiroshima Mon Amour and Fade to Grey cannot be compared. Thanks EC.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!. Billy is a legend. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
you are most welcome and thank you for watching the Electronic Cafe- Andy
Pan W.Currie to genialny 🎶 muzyk.Bardzo go cenię.Pozdrawiam Panów dziennikarzy . Jesteście profesjonalistami.Pozdrawiam serdecznie zPolski🇵🇱❤️😄
Billy is very interesting to listen to. I had the pleasure of meeting him backstage at an Ultravox gig at the Brighton Centre 1981. Also saw him live with Gary Numan 1979 Hammersmith Odeon with OMD in support. A unique musician who brought his classical background into the punk/electronic scene. Astradyne is a superb example of classical/electronic crossover.
Great comments, thanks for sharing. Indeed, Billy is a legend and was a joy to talk to. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
totally agree - thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
its like listening to some bloke in the pub: a retired Bus driver or car mechanic, not a megger famous, highly influential rock star. What an approachable modest guy he seems to be.
Indeed. Billy was (and is) fantastic. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Yes Billy is super cool, thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
So sad about Chris ..Quiet man R.I.P😥
Most definitely. Really sad news. MW
The man is a musical genius.
Without a doubt. What a CV. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Billy is one of those 'Quiet men' that most don't know about but he played an important and essential role in the music of the late 70s and 80s. Great interview.
You are spot on, great comments. Thanks for the kind words + for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Totally agree and thank you for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
And about time too!!!!! Thank you loads for this interview with the amazing Billy Currie... I have a room full of synths and perform regularly with them because of Ultravox an Billy in particular.
Billy is a legend. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I just wish Billy would of done more work, including newer material with Numan. Thought he was amazing on the Touring Principle line up.
Billy's DNA is all over some classic work. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
As a Numan fan listening to the Chris Payne interview was fantastic boys and now Billy Currie 👍.. Brilliant..
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Ultravox were my favourite group growing up and even to this day I play their albums. I've even got their tracks on my USB in the car. Absolutely great interview with Billy

What a coup lads! You've really been getting some great interviews for the channel. Chris Payne and now Billy! Ultravox were there first group I really got into after hearing the Vienna single. Billy and the rest of the band really are musical heroes of mine. Great to hear Billy's take on things. I'll look forward to part 2 very much.

ULTRAVOX at Nottingham Sandpipers. Brilliant gig. Got all 3 albums on vinyl plus singles. Love that period a lot.
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Great interview. What a musician, probably doesn’t realise how influential he is. I remember listening to SOR back in 78 and it blew me away, the sounds used and the production were innovative and the blue print for what was to come.
Thanks for the content👏
Thanks for the kind words. Couldn't agree more!. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Thank you for uncoving these lost histories.
Glad you like them! Thank you for comments and for supporting Electronic Cafe. MW
Another fantastic interview, and like Chris Payne, Billy seems like a thoroughly decent chap. Looking forward to part 2. Billy was(is) a brilliant keyboard player and certainly enhanced what Numan was doing. Listening to the Living Ornaments ‘79 album, it’s fair to say that he gave the live band such a massive, powerful sound, aided by Chris Payne. Billy’s synth solo during “On Broadway” always gave me goosebumps whenever I heard it because it is such an amazing piece of keyboard playing.
Agree on all that buddy, thank you for the great comments and for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
You are not wrong. Thanks for the kind words - glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

I am still listening to Ultravox 2 albums, almost every day.
Ultravox was my first real love of music
Thanks for sharing and importantly watching Electronic Cafe. MW
What a thoroughly engaging and open interview! I was always interested in how Billy ended up in so many bands a once and it must have been an incredible time to time to have been in the business. I recently saw Gary Numan (May 2023) at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena and Billy's early contributions came to mind. Thanks for all the fantastic music, Billy.
I saw Ultravox (2) on the Quartet tour at Hammersmith Odeon 4 Dec 1982, It was (like Mark) my first ever gig and was 13... Mark looks way better for his years than I do!!!!
Haha. Thanks for the kind words. Indeed Billy was a joy to talk to. We loved it and such a talented and important musician. Thanks for sharing and for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
When I first saw Ultravox I thought they were all from Scotland.
Then I heard Billy speak and I realised that he was from Yorkshire.
He’s been through a lot of bands. Amazing musician.
100%, a unique talent. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
those early ultravox albums are very similar to what magazine were also doing
Great comment and thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Found this video by accident ... and immediately changed my plans for the next half hour. I love all the bands he played for, fantastic music. With all the brilliant work he's done I still find it strange that he's something of a "hidden star". He deserves more recognition and honour!
Thanks your comments and glad you found us. Please subscribe and share . . . we have loads of great content. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
While playing Astradyne in the car one day my sister commented that the lead guitarist was quite good. I had to explain that the person she was referring to was Billy Currie on keyboards.
Love it! Thanks for watching the electronic cafe -Andy
Exactly what i said to Billy. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Gteat interview. Was hoping Billy would mention how he came up with the solo for On Broadway. I get goosebumps everytime i hear it.

That's a good ass music God to me.Billy is. The real life super hero of music. His music is saving the world with out fighting singing both make people very helpful to live ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So true. Thanks for your sharing and for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
One of my all time heroes!! thanks so much for this treasure of interview!! In my opinion, Systems of romance is one of the most important albums because it sorts of predicts the electronic sound to come, which John Foxx continues with Metamatic (Systems of romane part 2).. Billy Currie creates the soundscapes in almost all of those albums, with Ultravox, Gary Numan and Visage, besides his solo carrier, a multiinstrumentist, a part from keyboard wizard...
thank you for the kind words my friend and for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
Couldn't agree more!. Thanks for your kind words. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

"The arp odyssey is the first punk synth," Billy Curry. My biggest synth hero, love you so much, massive influence, thanks for ALL you've done.

Festivals are never the right venue for performances of albums. Most of the crowd would only know Vienna & Dancing...
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Any fan who loved the original lineup of Ultravox! & the first 3 albums definitely wouldn't be expecting Vienna trust me.
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx he's referring to Ultravox Mk1.
Ultravox Mark I were, and are, a very special band. They hit true success chart wise in their later incarnation, but that never appealed to me beyond their first album, Vienna. Shame we didn't get to hear about what it was like being produced by Brian Eno on the debut album.

Jf left wasn't doing well no record deal that's says it all owned money Steve shearers left? Midge came in made Ultravox better even better vocals?
Brilliant interview!. So great to hear Billy. Fortunate to have attended 2 of the 4 shows at the Paradise in Boston March 1979. The most impressive live band I've ever seen. It was like a light went on in a way similar to what the Beatles did. Seemed to us like the dawn of a whole new movement in rock with the Synths and electric violin being used in ways as powerful as the heaviest rock guitar(s) and more exotic!!! The other cool thing was the contrast of the controlled tightness of the band yet many moments where it sounded like the music was going off the edge which created so much excitement and danger! Loved the growling synths.. Couldn't wait to hear studio versions of the newer songs ( He's a Liquid /Radio Beach/ Touch and Go) shame it didn't happen. Became a personal mission to create something inspired by that magic!! Thanks Billy!
Great comments. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the kind words and of course for watching Electronic Cafe. Glad you enjoyed. MW

@@electroniccafemusic You’re Welcome 😊
Great 'long form' interview/conversation about an incredible career. I saw Ultravox Mk 2 at Manchester Apollo in May 1984. The gig mostly went well enough although there was some problem / on stage hiccup (with the synth programming..?) and one track off the new Lament album couldn't be played, which was frustrating. Tbh I hadn't been completely sold on the overall direction of Lament - I'd always liked their choppier tracks. However later that same summer I discovered Ultravox Mk I's albums HaHaHa and Systems of Romance in a small record shop in a nearby town, and they completely blew me away. I remember hoping that a return to working with Conny Plank would make the much anticipated 1986 album more like the Mk 1 / early Mk 2 stuff, but (imho) I found the W.Cann-less U-Vox album very disappointing, and I stopped following them after that. For me a track that only made the B side of the Vienna single, Passionate Reply, somehow epitomises Mk 2 at their best, because it carries with it the best of Mk 1.
Great comments, thanks. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Billy at 21:46: "There was a slight arrogance with us..." which the music press detected and used throughout Ultravox's career to hammer them with. Not a lot of favourable press for the band at any point, really. It was as if every album they released was U-Vox. At 27:59, Billie reveals that his MXR pitch shifter on Rage in Eden (the song?) was set to an augmented fourth - a tritone, the Devil's Interval! How evil of him!

I realise it's entirely selfish of me, but it kinda hurts a bit when people like Billy and John don't feel any need to communicate, almost to the point of complete alienation, when they were responsible for such definitive works like the first three albums. It seems such a waste that they may both go to their graves without ever at least acknowledging their joint contribution to modern music. I mean, it's not an exaggeration to say that they have influenced a huge number of artists in the last forty years.
Indeed, both John and Billy are two extremely influential musicians who's genius have formed a huge part of so many peoples musical tapestry the last 30 years. Great comments and thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
