Fantastic interview, Chris is always an absolute pleasure to talk to. Was lucky enough to get Chris to play on a Tenek track back in 2011, he took it to another level. Can’t wait for Part 2!
Thanks for your kind words + for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
Superb interview, with a keyboard legend, who I saw playing with Gary Numan on his last Wembley Arena tour in 1981, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe, much appreciated. MW

Fantastic interview gentlemen. Chris is a proper musician who seems to be able to play anything and i know Billy Currie has gone on record saying he looked up to Chris which is high praise from someone who has had so much success.
thanks Lenny always appreciate your support for the Electronic Cafe my friend - Andy

Amazing to get to know all these legends and their work through your interviews! I had little knowledge of Chris and love being able to connect the dots. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!. Thanks as always for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Wow how good was this 2 of my all time favorite tracks , Are Friends Electric and Fade To Grey, LOL every Xmas eve we all get to add 10 songs for our playlist for party. These two songs were blasted out of the speakers at Waddy point Fraser Island Australia for 10 years + i was asked to change after a few years i said NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! never.
Haha, fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Great interview guys-Chris is an understated & interesting person- I’ve watched his making off Fade to Grey many times-just a real shame that not many people know that he created that genius riff.
Indeed. Lovely guy. Thank you for your kind words. much appreciated. Thanks too for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Totally agree Andrew! Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe- Andy
Chris is an absolute superstar 👏👏
100% - thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
True legend synth player, love the Numan team.
Complex still gives me goosebump :)
Indeed. What a song. Thanks you for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Me too! Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
Wow, as you're asking Chris how he went from classical music to an interview with Gary Numan, and he mentioned his music teacher being Aedan Kerney...who was also MY music teacher and the choir master at Boundstone School in Lancing!! How have I only just found out that Chris went to the same school as me?!?!?
Wow, that's amazing, thanks for sharing ... and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Great interview with Chris. I enjoyed it a lot. Can’t wait for part 2.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for kind words and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Nice one!
Thanks! Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
thanks and for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
tik and tok one next please . :)
Brilliant interview. Chris is an electronic music legend and this is really enjoyable. Thank you!
Couldn't agree more!. Thanks for your kind words. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Very interesting interview. I was a wee lad in 1979/80 and Numan was my introduction to electronic music. The listing of synths used on albums I always found informative. When will you guys interview Simon Posford? Unequivocally one of the most talented electronic music producers around today.
Thanks for the kind words + for watching Electronic Cafe. Glad you enjoyed. MW
Super interview guys. I particularly love his rather humble beginnings, trying to find his way, picking up the viola - not knowing music.
Appreciate the kind words and for watching the Electronic Cafe - Andy
@@andymcnab6848 and I appreciate you mate (MarkW as well), but yourself in particular because you were absolutely bubbling. Giddy..

i'm sure there's a compliment in there somewhere haha :-) MW
@@electroniccafemusic oh yeah, nothing but compliments. it's nice to know I'm not the only one who gushes over someone I admire
Great interview. Fade to Grey has such a quirky intro before the bassline kicks in. I would love to know how they came up with that

Indeed he is. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Absolutely a lovely guy! Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe =Andy
Great interview , enjoyed that
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for comments. Thanks too for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
I love the brief talk about how unreliable the old analogue synths were, and the digital synths that replaced analogue, but now we have so many re-release of so many classic synths, juno x , jupiter x, behringer sh 101, korg arp odyssey etc, golden age of synths! Shout out to all of you guys! When machines rock !!!!!! Love you guys! God bless!
Thanks for your kind words + for watching Electronic Cafe. Means a lot. MW
Another fantastic interview as usual keep it up lads
Much appreciated. Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Don't understand why Chris is is critical of his singing effort - "Turn" is a great song, quite possibly my favourite on the album, and he did a great job! So much passion and grit, like he was really cheesed off by something - not quite punk but there in spirit. Adds variety to the proceedings, too. No-no, stop it Mr Payne, I for one won't have any of it!
A very surprising Boy George story. And always so good to hear of "Fade to grey" origins. Overall an addictive episode, heading straight to the next chapter! Thank you guys! And of course thank you Mr Payne!
Thanks for your kind words + for watching Electronic Cafe. Glad you enjoyed it. I too like "Turn". Great track. MW
Brother of Davie Payne, sax player in the Kilburns & blockheads.
I did not know that. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Not convinced, can't find a reference. CP 13 years younger and born in Penzance. DP born London
Amazing interview with an amazing man.
Thank you. Appreciated
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
"I didn't have an effing clue." Love it. As always a brilliant interview. The 'Fury' tour was my schoolmates and mine first Gary Numan tour, although we'd followed Gary and the band for a few years beforehand. It shows how 'fragile' (see what I did there ;-)) how Chris and Russell's instruments were back then; it almost sounds like a racing team mechanics crew followed them around to maintain the equipment. You get to appreciate from this interview how complicated and hard it was to put on a live Numan concert back then.
Great comments Tom, glad you enjoyed. Part 2 this week. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Awesome feedback Tom, thanks for your amazing support for the Electronic Cafe- Andy
A great interview with Chris, who does seem to be a thoroughly decent chap. Interesting to hear that it was actually him who came up with “Fade To Grey”, although Billie Curry and Midge Ure etc added elements to it to make it the great song it became. Don’t know if you’ve been asked this before, but an interview with Denis Haines would be great to hear at some point. Out of all the musicians who have worked with Gary over the years, he seems to be the most enigmatic. Pretty much everyone else has been interviewed, but not him. I remember hearing something years ago, not sure by whom, but they said that he didn’t quite fit in with the band, which doesn’t much sense in hindsight because he was in Dramatis. Would love to hear what he has to say about his time with Gary and his great album, “The Listening Principle”.
Great comments. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the kind words, glad you liked it - part 2 coming. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Hi Mark and Andy great interview. Had no idea Kylie and Kelly burrowed the riff?!!!
Thank you! We didn’t either! Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
Glad you enjoyed it. Such an interesting guy. Part 2 coming. Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
The days that music was experimental created where so much better. The best songs emerged back than.
Without a shadow of a doubt. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
The old band were the best. Gary's music has suffered since their departure.
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe.MW
Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
He must be completely senile, as he says he enjoys touring more now than ever
Brilliant video & conversation with chris payne. A legend 👏

Chris is a lovely person and we have done some beautiful music together .Sadly Visage was stolen from Midge and me by the contractual situation when we made the Visage recording and now are copied by John Pitcher of MRC Digital and put up for Synch uses as VISAGE. There are no members of Visage on these recordings and even Fade to Grey has been used by Dior and more world wide renowned brands who believe they are buying Visage . I do hope Midge Billy + Chris will ensure any more uses of the music is in fact quality recordings like the Blitzed Mix we recorded for the Sky Arts Documentary czcams.com/video/FJY9cS27obQ/video.html
Well said Rusty. Chris is lovely. Thanks too for watching and supporting Electronic Cafe. MW
Amen to all of that Rusty- thanks for your amazing support for the Electronic Cafe as well x
Sad to read all of this, but I really hope everything will work out for you guys - and especially you, Rusty, you truly deserve it. Good luck!
Sad to read this rusty. But you & the group amongst others have given us such great music which is priceless 👏
Fury tour was jx8p , d50 came out 2 years later 1987
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Chris is lovely, he will respond to comments on FB, Learning Fade to G at the moment
Great stuff. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I love Chris' music, he's fantastic. Thanks for this great interview. Back in the 80s, when I was a teenager in Germany, I was a big fan of Dramatis (I was probably their only German fan, though). Did I get this right, it's possible we finally get a proper studio version of "Sand and stone"? That would be awesome. I've been waiting for this for a 100 years!!
Glad you enjoyed it!. Thanks for the kind words and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Oh yes, "Sand and stone" is a lost gem! Pity they didn't release it back in the day.
Another superb interview with a synth legend can we please have one with vince clarke or any of the human league love your channel keep up the good work
Great suggestion!. Thanks for comments and kind words. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

The vocals sound a bit like Heaven 17
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
the hook from Fade to Grey was lifted from Being Boiled anyway
Actually, it wasn't.
Cant see it myself.
Lol what?! What are you talking about? Have you heard either song at all?
@user-yc5um2pl5v having purchased Being Boiled in 1979, and been a Numan fan in the beginning, and understanding the two commonly ascending notes don't really make a hook. Chris Payne playing a composition he wrote at music college in a sound check makes it more than improbable. It is unlikely that Marsh/Ware heard the progression from Payne either. Just because something sounds similar doesn't mean it's lifted.
@@colinwright4139 Exactly! Also, maybe it's simply a common and/or natural progression that just plays itself - happens in music all the time.
I gave "Being boiled" a hard listen yesterday, and yeah, there's a short bit that sounds kinda similar - but I highly doubt "Being boiled" was that widely known in 1979. It was a cult hit, heard by chosen few, not sure anyone would already be lifting from it.
Boss interview. My 1st synth was a moog Rogue. Then juno 6, alpha one, d10
Like Mr Payne I sold all of em
Thank you for kind words.
Yes, same here - let's not go there !
