    Hopefully they became poor after the war due to losing their plantation and as they were all thumbs they could not make a penny out of anything. I am glad the Union took over or burned the property of slavers. The Union were smart because they politically obliterated slavers and by giving voting rights to black people they dominated politics.

      The Epps home (it wasn't a big plantation) was destroyed during the war (possibly by the same troops that rescued Patsey), the family went bankrupt, and Ed and Mary became victims of a Yellow Fever epidemic in 1867.

      Yes... you see people getting killed, sold, lynched, raped, almost beaten to death, family getting seperated humiliated, tortured. Obviously "sanitization"...
      We all know this atrocities were far worse in reality doesn't but calling this sanitized is just not true.

      One reason I like Schindler’s List vs Hotel Rwanda - if you’re going to tell a genocide story - black and white - show the horror - slavery was 16-20 hour days for an entire class of people who were no more important than a tire, or a tool, or a sofa to another class - honestly astonishing that this was commonplace so recently in our history as human beings

  • @jimj1525
    @jimj1525 Před 10 měsíci +73

    The Mrs. Epps character is such a meanie. I think it’s coming from a place of humiliation and insecurity; her husband prefers the company of a slave (subhuman in her eyes), and that scares her to death

    • @rominn2184
      @rominn2184 Před 6 měsíci

      ^ Of course. At that time, a white woman is a mere notch above a slave herself. She is bound to the home. While she technically co-owns the slaves and has the authority to command and maybe even punish them, she in reality has zero other rights. She cannot vote. She cannot own property. I don't believe she can leave the plantation without her husband's permission. It is almost as if she may as well be one of the slaves herself. This movie was incredible for subtly shining a light on that.

      She not getting the D every night. Funny thing is that she got platts drugged out so she could take advantage of him. A sick and twisted mind game from both of them. The white guy was knocking on patsy but he treats her like shyt when she doesn’t pick enough and the wife being mad at patsy when she is not in control of anything when she should be mad at the husband but she is also guilty for sleeping with those black men.

      In the scene Mrs Epps says the slaves are "foul" with their hate. She offers them food and says "there will be none for you Pats" and pats looks up in reaction and to the ground which Mrs Epps exaggerates MASSIVELY as giving her "an insolent look" (she was just looking for an excuse to hurt her). After she does she screams at Mr. Epps as being a "eunich" (which means a man without genitals) for not "disciplining" the slaves for being "foul with their hate" of them. She screams again at him to "BEAT IT (the hate) from her). Hope that clears the scene up.
