SILO DEMOLITION - THIS WILL CRASH!!

- We recently tore down a concrete silo on our family property. Here is the demolition process from one excavator pushing and one excavator jack hammering holes at the base. These guys were fearless or at least acted the part until it was over and we breathed a sigh of relief 😅 . So much fun!!

You can see in the other video I posted with the multiple different angles where his bucket got caught and dragged him a little. He was a little scared.
Where the heck is this? I can't believe the amount of people that are walking through the site.
In the USA. Back woods and backyard.
Seen some made of brick come down, easy clean up. Concrete and rebar, will see if it comes down clean.
They were able to clean this up in less than 4 hours.
We tore a couple of them down a few years ago, just wrapped a cable around them and pulled it through with a dozer with the winch
Did you remove some of the concrete at the base or did you just pull?

so many people wandering around way too close.
Keys we did have some people walking around, but there wasn’t a moment when we felt too unsafe. Maybe a little prayer went out, but it was okay in the end.
Near perfect fall. Testament to the human mind. Dead reckoning! In the 70’s I assisted demo of a chimney. Used a long steel cable. Drilled two holes and passed cable through. Attached both ends to a 977 cat. Pulling cables ends ripped the bricks till it tilted and collapsed. Hmmm! Watching this gave me the same nervous apprehension. Good watch.

It's bad enough to be in the machine, but people walking next to it is a really bad idea
Ya know at first I was thinking oh relax, then as I watched I was thinking these people are … well, not smart…
We did our best and the majority of the demolition happened on the side where it fell. The people on the opposite side were “safe” as they could be. We had exit plans for all involved. Our main concern was making sure the excavator didn’t get tied up with the ladder or chute as it fell.
Just call it what it is, it's just plane dumb walking and parking close to this operation.
Is there any asbestos in that concrete

Did the silo already have a lean before work started? it appears so.
No. It didn’t have a lean. Though the inside had eroded the concrete by several inches thinning out the strength of the interior.

I would have loved dynamite. But the budget was pretty tight 😀
what was your approximate cost for demo and clean up? We have a similar one to take down.
Not sure. It was my father in laws. We took down some blue metal ones that were sold. It might be hard to get a price because the concrete was removed time and material. I believe. Plus there were other concrete that was broken and thrown into an old manure pit. So hard to say.
Could of used a few sticks of dynommite it would of been faster and much much more cheaper !especily on a on farm land !
Definitely use a few sticks of dynamite cheeper and safer !light the fuse and run !!!

I've seen the concrete silos last longer than the farmhouse and out buildings. Why teaar it down?

It had been not in use for 15 years or so. There was also eroding happening inside. We had sold the other two silos and decided since this farm would not be utilizing the silo in the future it would be better to tear it down then have it fall down on the barn later in life.
I used to demolish silos you can get hurt the way you do it make a s smiley an start in the middle of it going out each way be safe

A little primer cord would have been faster and therefore less expensive in demolishing this silo.
That operator is so slow and putting himself and others in danger.plus what is with all the people just walking around,silo could have collapsed and go into wrong direction,kickback,come apart as it’s collapsing and throwing debris everywhere.not impressed with whole situation.just saying my opinion.

Looks like The silo was built well not to fall
Actually the silage inside was eating away the concrete. The first side they started to take down was 4-5 inches thick while the last bit was closer to 3-4 inches. It also was eroding some of the rebar inside.

Probably but in the end we were safe. No emergency calls had to go out.

I don’t think when we got close to the actual topple any kids were close. I could have been mistaken. I was not close to the silo so I’m not sure.

We had two operators and then two people roaming. I agree. We probably should have had everybody back.
As much as it was leaning, why not cut on the back side and let gravity do its job?? Heck of a lot safer

@st57prd He probably doesn't have a silo of his own to take down and video, so he hates on you for something to do! I'm almost 70 and worked on farm and in the woods logging, so I know that there are times when you just figure out a way, and do it. In hindsight maybe there's a better way, maybe even a cheaper way. But we do it our way, and it's done!! Let the haters, hate. They'll never be as happy as we are!!!

The silo was actually built by my father in law. So it’s 30-40 years old. We moved operations from this farm to a different location and it meant the silos were not in use. Plus the manure pit ( which was older) was caving in. So it had to come down for safety reasons.

Never said this is how you should. Just what we did. More precautions could have been made, but we made it on CZcams and not the local news. So all good.
