In 1991 there was a woman anthropologist who successfully made contact with the islanders and managed to spend time in their tribe and learn about them.
Turns out that they had been extremely hostile to all the previous anthropologist groups trying to make contact with them... because these groups had all been composed entirely of men.
In their eyes, the only logical reason for sending groups made up only of men (to another tribe) was if you were sending warriors to attack them.
Ah! I hadn't thought of that!
Good info!
Also, they had had contact with missionaries before, about a couple of hundred years before, and been horribly exploited. the fact that a woman had gone to speak to them canceled the forms of exploitation that they had been subjected to. My family has a number of missionaries in it, and there is so much wrong in chau´s mindset and training that it is simply frightening. To deliberately expose these people to the microbes he is carrying is awefull. and hubris. Oh boy.
It would be interesting what would happen if (hypothetical!) a mother and her newborn, preferably of the closest resemblance to the islanders would come to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the story came to another end
@@im-at-home I think it would have went well back in the days, but I would not want to test that nowadays! They have been constantly harassed and, though they live in a bubble, they probably get lots of pressure from the outside world in both direct and indirect ways too.
They might be even more on the defensive with strangers today!
@@raquellofstedt9713 I'm not saying this cancels anything, or would even work today.
I don't doubt that they will have been exploited, killed and abused by other people, and would not be surprised at all if they are even MORE hostile towards strangers today than they ever were before.
It can't be easy to try and preserve their ways of life when even the planet itself is drastically shifting under human influence.
I just thought it was an interesting thing to bring up because of the huge contrast in perspectives that stem from these different cultures. Wipe out the memory of a person so that they don't have any notion of how any of the large societies we know of today functions, and have a large group of strangers approach them (with no way to identify anything about them except their gender).
I think most people in that situation would feel safer if the group approaching contained women and children, then if they were entirely composed of men.
So he almost got killed 3 times but kept coming back??? Wow. He was REALLY stupid.
But he had God's armor on
He had the healing power of Lord Jesus
Martyr Syndrome
@@savvymysteries9849 that was a totally different situation and place in history.
This is why religion is difficult to speak on because of the interpretation of reality. For us, if we go through a situation where we almost die 3 times, we will come to the conclusion that we will probably die if we try again. For him, however, as a Christian it probably empowered him and made him feel like God is protecting him and he is clearly the chosen one to finish this mission.
It's unfortunate he had to learn what logical interpretation of reality means by dying.
The man was incredibly arrogant and had been warned repeatedly against interrupting their way of life. What a tool.
Totally agree.
He also sounds like he was under some kind of delusion.
Alternate theory - he committed the most complex suicide in human history.

They can't just leave people alone. It's annoying enough when they come knocking at our doors or stopping you on the street to annoy you, but this guy really got what he deserved for breaking the law, trespassing and putting an entire tribe's life at risk.

Apparently only 3 ways on that island... And the last way they tell you really hits you where it hurts.
Yeah, fuck immigrants! Trump was right.
As a native american I can give 2 points for thought.
1. All native people were forced into Christianity at some point. Forcing people into a cosmic belief they have no desire to have is not only morally wrong, it is disturbing when humans do such an act in others.
2. Covid has shown us how fast a deadly virus can spread. Chau had no idea what microbes he was carrying. He could have committed genocide on an undeserving people. And he didn't care. His lack of moral apathy towards the tribes health makes me feel little sympathy for his fate.
Let's hope the tribe was not exposed to deadly (for them) pathogens. And thank God this happened before Covid.
You're absolutely right. Well said.
Very good point about exposing them to dangerous diseases. Chau really did not think through his actions at all.

I see this as basically trespassing. They warned him, others warned him. He still insisted on trying to force his beliefs on them through ego. Sad he died through his own silliness but I don't think anyone should be punished for it.
I don't understand why people say that these indiginous people shoudn't be held responsible for killing someone. Isn't that kind of racist? People act as if they aren't able to understand what's wrong and right. If someone jumps into a tiger's cage we say it wasn't the tiger's fault, he couldn't help it. But they're humans!
@Jonathan Gullett He wasn't just casually walking through their yard. He was continuously forcing himself there when they made it clear he was not welcome. Depending where you are in the world you can defend your home from someone trespassing. especially if they are repeatedly doing it and you have already warned them off. If you'd just let random strangers walk into your home uninvited to do what they like and not put up a fight that's your business.

Prayer clearly didn't help him. What the hell was this man expecting? And how exactly did he expect to give them Bible stories? Though mimicry?
@@katherinewinters5674 it seems like he was obsessed with this fantasy that god would interfere and he would teach them the Bible. Other people have suffered from this delusion Illness and almost seem to be fatal or their lives are cut short.
It’s hard to believe that he rather die than live his life and make a difference in the world. So what if they were living in “satan’s island”? If god didn’t want them to learn of the Bible then he would of created a miracle that day and let him live.

Obviously it would be absurd to impose modern criminal justice concepts on an uncontacted tribe.
Does anyone know the tribal laws they practice?

@@stt5v2002 but even in our modern criminal justice system you're justified in using force to defend your home from ppl that aren't welcome.
It was clearly communicated to this guy that he wasn't welcome but he kept trying to get in. In most states in the US you're justified in using deadly force to defend your home. The castley doctrine.
Though it is tragic that he died, the man was extremely arrogant, in my opinion. He was also abusive in the sense that he did not respect these people's boundaries; he did not fully appreciate that these people had their own way of life, possibly their own belief systems, and it was not his place to force himself on these people. He thought his beliefs were superior to everyone else's. And his lack of humility caused him to disregard the notion that others are competent enough to determine their own paths. It was not his place to impose himself and his ideas on anyone.
I also find him to be either really dumb or unbelievably conceited. He wanted to spread the word of his God to people who he couldn't possibly communicate with. Why would he- not a linguist, or an anthropologist, or an expert in anything that could potentially qualify him to atte2mpt to communicate with these tribesfolk- think he could accomplish his goal?
The islanders were patient enough to give him plenty of chances to walk away. He was trespassing, he didn't leave, they had every right to defend themselves. What if the next wise guy decides to land on this island with a gun?
The Bible also says if they do not receive you. Leave that city and dust off your feet and kept going. He did not follow scripture and the teaching of Christ.
Murder never!!!!! What are we neanderthals????
He had absolutely no respect for their customs especially exposing them to diseases that would kill them. His justification for invading their island was to save them from hell which is completely self righteous and ridiculous. He deserved what he got and hopefully they didn’t get exposed. The fact that he thought he could single handedly learn their language without any field linguistics training to the capacity of being able to translate the Bible (a book written in languages that he himself seemingly could not understand) fairly and accurately into it shows just how naive he really was. Even if they did embrace him and take him in, which was a long shot to begin with, it would taken even a seasoned linguist at the minimum a year to acquire fluency in their language let alone the ability to understand their cultural norms and mores to such an extent as to accurately represent the Bible to them. Reminds me of the 16th century Spanish explorers who believed they had converted hundreds of natives in a single day through baptism, when in reality the natives merely thought the ritual of baptism was a ritualistic form used by the Spanish to say hello lol. So many of these missionary types are so clueless when it comes to the complexities of communicating with isolated or foreign cultures. There’s actually a really famous missionary named Jim Elliot who went to preach to a group of cannibals in South America. I'm a Christian and understand the call to share the Gospel, but this story grieved me in every direction. His actions seemed naive or deluded at best, sensation seeking, to grandiose or narcissistic. He could have killed them all with contact. I pray for Chau and his family, and these islanders.
The best way to spread the gospel is to live a happy healthy life, lead by example, and respect others.
Can you pass that line of thought and action to your fellow brethren? Thanks
I mean isn’t this how the old gospel was spread in the first place lol
@@GKtheElder haha
Don't be a Christian waste of time
When colonizing goes wrong!
No. when colonizing goes right. All Indigenous peoples should have been like the Sentinelese people.
@@help_each_other2531 I meant wrong, when I say wrong, I’m speaking in regards to the guy who died-not vice versed.
The perfect illustration of the phrase "play stupid games, win stupid prizes". Talk about a "three strikes and you're out" law.
"Fueled by this never ending supply of beef jerky." Dr. Grande never fails.😂
The best phrase to describe the debacle would be, "facepalms in Heaven."
He took scissors as gifts-really practical to help with all the paper goods and sewing, right? Couldn’t possibly be mistaken for weapons either, right?
Maybe he hoped they would enjoy scrap booking.
It’s called no trespassing.
Dr Grande, Thank you for responding to my request on Patreon - How sweet that you listened and adjusted! Thank you!
The Gilligan's island joke was your best of all time.
Yes, top notch!
Always amazing humour Dr Grande xxx
He was going after the Darwin Award 🥇
Too bad those all have to be awarded posthumously. It would make for a hell of an awards show.
He won!
He got it
@@FrankBenlin People alive but rendered infertile due to stupidity are eligible for this ironic award. I know it doesn't apply here, though
He was a fundamentalist, he might not believe in Darwin. The irony
I believe that when the boy's spear hit the Bible on John Chau's chest God was saying, "I'm warning you John.....This is what can happen if you keep pursuing this course of action.....I've shielded you this time, but you're stepping outside my will......"
Dr your videos are always something I look forward to. They make me laugh, and judging by the comments, it's obvious that nearly everyone feels the same. When I first started viewing your channel and I believe it was very close to it's inception. I remember you had the same merch for a quite some time that imo was your original goal of taking away the stigma attached to mental health issues. I think becoming more comfortable as time goes on is the natural progression if you are a good fit and just as important, you enjoy what you do..Adding in the dry humour really clicked with people. As a person who has struggled with mental health challenges I'm so glad you are here for the long haul. With your sub count and views growing to an impressive number, Im extremely comfortable in stating you have shined a bright beacon of light and hope. And I for one am very grateful. Keep it going Doc as I'm confident that others will be following your lead!
I LOVE the "surface to air spears" political quip 😂
They are on an island. He kept attempting to impose his will. They did not want him there. After several "warnings", he could not take a hint. There were opportunities for him to leave those people alone. After the second time they ran him off, I believe that they were justified in killing him.
I was a missionary for a while in my youth and I see something in this story that I often saw on the mission. People, particularly people from the US, come to do mission work with the idea that they are going to save people, not just spiritually, but often by giving the people things they couldn't get for themselves. They come as the savior themselves and this is the misunderstanding. These people are good hearted and they really do mean well, but it's hard to reach people when you place yourself above them, even if only in your own mind. The greatest gift you can ever give to anyone is to treat then like fellow human beings and the only way to really preach the gospel is to live it. Most of us, even at our best moments, bungle through trying to do this even once we realize that we don't have the power to save anyone on our own or to give them more humanity than they already have.
The way I see the islanders killing this young man is analogous to the way I see someone killing a person who enters into their house unauthorized. To many indigenous people, the land in and of itself is their home and, just like a person might get shot just walking into someone's house uninvited, this young man was entering into a place that these people likely saw in the same way, especially since it was known that they wanted outsiders to leave them alone. I do believe that this young man meant well but those islanders had no way to know that so it's really hard to blame them for killing him when they probably felt quite threatened and, after all, they had chased him off the island twice already so that's like shooting two warning shots, which I don't think the law even asks you to do if someone breaks into your house.
❤
So the islanders gave him 3 strikes... and he was out.
"The power of Christ compels you!" Oh wait no.

I missed this one, not sure how! I’m glad I found it, Dr Grande your point on “misinterpreting Christian values” is 💯
I'm not a clinical psychologist, just a social one. I always find your learned take insightful. And you output these fast as well. I recommend you to others, it's a great way to learn about people. Best wishes, Denis.

Yep, nothing but fine logic coming out of that cave.
Not sure why his parents would have permitted him to even apply there, unless they bought into the fundamentalist kool-aid. Not a good academic choice.

Uh nope. I would only embarking on a mission not unlike Chau’s as I have ventured into the fiery deps (what word should I be using?!) of cacti care only to emerge with many tiny wounds and dead cacti leaving me confused and defeated . I know enough now to never jump into those waters again as certain death of some kind is all that awaits me.
Let’s start a gofundme for getting the sentinalese surface to air spears!
"only he could save them" so narcissistic. the narcissistic ethnocentrism in missionary work is so gross
As always, your video is full of information, compassion, and a well thought out response. And as always, all your hard work is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Yes!! Thanks Dr. Grande, another master piece!!
The Sentinelese' policy on illegal immigration is something I approve of wholeheartedly.
As for me, he didn’t have wisdom from God and was trying to boast about himself. Also when he said, “They would be damned to hell” and “He could only save them” is were he went wrong. The only one who saves is Christ Jesus, not mankind and you should never force your beliefs on anyone.
