    I have 1, a different brand, and when you hold the collar, it activates the other gears which increases the drive. I mainly use it to assemble furniture.

    Fun fact: if you hold the rear section of the handle stationary, when you turn the collar in the middle, it spins the bit twice as fast. I had the ratchetless version 10 years ago. It has what is basically a car differential behind the shank. So, when you do what I described, it’s like high-siding a car with an open differential, and making the inside wheel spin at double speed. Good deal on that thing though. Usually the bits sell for that much

  • @TestSpaceMonkey
    @TestSpaceMonkey Před rokem +6

    Got that a few months back for the features and bit holding. The magnetic retention is a bit of a let down though so I swapped out the fixed holder for a DeWalt quick-release extension (take the front end apart, add a spacer to the ~5/16 integrated hex, epoxy or pin it back together). The differential gears are also on the small side so don't try anything heavy duty with it and definitely add some heavy grease.

  • @unionse7en
    @unionse7en Před 9 měsíci

    I use one of these specifically to reduce torque (and gain speed).... it's easier to use than a drill ... i have a jig that needs about 15 4-40 screws partially loosed every load sequence. They have these in a least 3 different gear ratios I think. I wanted the reduced torque to avoid stripping the threads on the 4-40s

  • @danieltaylor8439
    @danieltaylor8439 Před 7 měsíci

    I have that screwdriver and I do enjoy it. However, the double drive system doesn't work super great. If it has to handle any amount of torque it starts jamming up. If the screw or whatever is loose but introduce any amount of load it starts freaking out. I still like it I just don't use the double drive system

    Had it for a while. It’s a great screwdriver but when going through wood, gets kinda rough on both twists. Stick to the first twist. Works great on low friction thread. Also, the bit caddy is made of crap plastic. My biggest complaint is how the bit caddy doesn’t hold the bits and I have to fumble with them falling out when I change bits. Otherwise, great ratcheting screwdriver.

    Dude, this isn't even its final form. They've got another one that's a little harder to find that has a slightly larger collar with additional gearing to speed the rotation up even faster. I think they usually sell it in one of those goofy plastic "try me" packages with a boxed bit set nowadays. I've had both for years and I get them for people as gifts pretty regularly, because they're that damn good.
    Further, it turns out Lowes doesn't actually own the "DoubleDrive" branding or the patents for any of the mechanisms in their version of it. There's another company I can't remember the name of offhand that sells the exact same product, but with a switch instead of a collar on the direction changer, and some cosmetic differences to get away from the Kobalt branding. This company also makes T-Handle and micro-bit drivers with these mechanisms. QC might be an issue with their products, though. I'd dig up some links, but I'm at work and you're pretty good at research anyway.
    Also, as others have mentioned, mind the set screws on the collar. They love to get loose and fall out when you aren't looking.
