  • I am pleased to introduce you to the ToAuto company and review two of their furnaces for you. They sell Foundry furnace kits so that you can get started melting metal quickly. I am reviewing both the 6 KG furnace kit and the 12 KG kit. These kits are a great low cost way to get started.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I found it very informative

    My only concern is that inexperienced new hobbyists who buy one instead of researching a diy build thoroughly are likely to end up unknowingly working with unsealed ceramic fiber and using those ingot tongs as crucible tongs (and maybe paying more than they really need to).
    I agree, that does not seem as safe as I'd like.
    Thanks for the first unbiased, experienced review I have seen on one of these sort of kits!

    Is the foundry all hot right after use? Or is it built to keep cool on the outside? Basically all I’m asking is Do I have to wait a hour to put it back away into my garage? Or can I put it away and not worry about all the flammable and expensive stuff in my garage??

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před rokem

      Yes, it is very hot. I let mine cool outside. I’m not sure if one with ceramic fiber would stay cool on the outside more. You could join the hobby metal casting group on Facebook and ask the question there

      Sounds like it's not getting enough air...which burner? If it's the one with the choke plate, make sure you open it after the furnace warms up.

      @@backyardmetalcasting it was air added a forced air set up works better than exspected

      Yea, it doesn't take much air to burn better!

    What determines if a furnace needs a FAN to push AIR through the furnance? The size of the furnace, or the refractory inside of furnance?

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před 2 lety +1

      No, it would depend on your burner design. A naturally aspirated burner uses the force of the gas (usually) to move the air in too and mix it for a good burn. There does need to be a good sized exit hole in the furnace so it doesn't have back pressure too. That being said, a small air supply can help a poorly designed burner burn better. 🔥

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před 2 lety +1

      If your burner has a choke, you can really see the flame change from a soft yellow to a roaring blue or colorless flame when the choke us opened

    Can I use butane gas in one of these rather than propane, or does it burn too hot?

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před 2 lety

      Butane is hotter than propane? I would think it would be fine but I've never tried butane so use at your own risk. The burner doesn't get hot so the question would be if your furnace could handle it. I take the burner out of the furnace as soon as I turn it off to prevent the hot furnace from transferring heat to the burner.
      Where do you get butane?

    I wish I saw this video before I bought my 6kg furnace. Nothing but a headache. For more money, I could have bought a better furnace. For less money, I could have built a better one.

    • @backyardmetalcasting
      @backyardmetalcasting  Před 3 lety

      Yes, it really needs a regulator and the Micheal Porter style burner is much better. That (Michael Porter style) burner is very easy to build though.

    I unfortunately can not recommend this company based on the one I bought. The connection between the hose and the burner leaked enough that it ignited. Not a deal breaker as I’m accustomed to working with gas flames and potential problems. But when I tried to snug the connection it snapped off without any undue force. It has no way to grab the burner side and support it while tightening.
    Worse was when I tried going through customer service they stalled until I exceeded the return period and I never heard from them again.

    A review of a smelter without getting the unit up to temperature defeats the entire purpose of reviewing it
