McMurtry Speirling BREAKS Goodwood Hillclimb Record!! 39.08!

- There's a new Goodwood Hill RECORD. After 23 years Nick Heidfeld's Timed Shootout record in the McLaren MP4/13 has been broken. F1 and IndyCar star Max Chilton's new 39.08 second run in the incredible McMurtry Speirling fan car has knocked over two seconds off that time.
It's also taken the Outright Hill record from the Volkswagen ID.R. Romain Dumas' time of 39.9 seconds was smashed earlier in the day in practice, and a further 0.1 seconds in the Timed Shootout.
The small car-it's only 3.5 meters (137.8 inches) long, 1.7 m (66.9 in) wide, and 1.1 m (43.3 in) tall-is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 1.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h), capped due to hillclimb gearbox selection. What's more, the Spéirling sports 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds) of instant downforce, more than what a Formula 1 car is capable of generating at speeds up to 150 mph (241 km/h), but with significantly less drag.
Compared to the demonstrator car that made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year, the McMurtry Spéirling record-breaking car went through an intensive program of prototyping and testing. A lot of time was dedicated to the unique fan-powered downforce system, which enables it to generate more than double its own weight in downforce. Unlike conventional vehicles, the Spéirling's downforce is available at all speeds as it does not rely on airflow over the car.

I feel like the "SHHH" sound is the future of cool car sounds. Cus piston airplane's sound were and are cool, but you cant beat a freaking fighter jet.
it looks very promising, however there might be a huge issue with following of these cars. The dirty air behind it must be pretty disgusting with this fan and huge rear wing. In my opinion it will be very hard to make those fan cars raceable.
What's wrong with silent cars ? You cannot annoy people with them ?
Formula E needs to have a good look at itself.

I can’t stop watching it. Talk about literally taking the entire world by storm in just 2 runs. The whole world is talking about this beautiful piece of engineering. And the day before it ran 99.999oo9% of the world didn’t know the name of the company or the car. It’s probably the most advanced thing that’s happened in the automotive world in 100 years. I really pray Nurburgring and Pikes Peak are in the works….
Impressive, but what lap would it run without the fan?
Conversely, may we expect fans to be added to IC cars?

It reminds me of a scaled down bat mobile. This makes the Tesla model S plaid look slowwwwww.. absolutely insane vehicle. Kudos to the one who dreamed it, to those who built it and to the driver for having the balls to drive it.
Fan downforce. Taken from the banned concept from F1 many many years ago. It's not new tech.

Nurburgring sound dangerous as hell for a fan car with active suspension. But I'd watch the hell out of that.
The Pikes Peak would be hilarious in the last 1/4 of the race. The road has long bumps and short bumps that make ground effect spoilers unique for this race. Tons of down force will just beat up the chassis and driver.

It probably can't run long enough to complete either course.
With this car you can take any record you want as long as you can handle the g-forces. This thing will drive around a formula 1 car in slow corners. Can't wait for track times. They will be insane, especialy short circuits.

yeah max speed of evo was 369 kph and it can reach its top speed in just 8 seconds or less

@@jeffreypostma6832 don't be so sure about that. It has a 60kwh battery! Like an ID3. And I hear that the lack of wings combined with the fan makes for really efficient driving compared to something like the 718 EV racing concept.

I love how the cameramen, who have been recording fast cars for the entire festival, cant keep pace with this car! they're either wayyyyy too slow and the car almost darts out of frame or they go way too fast to try to stay ahead of it! amazing car

This isn't a fast car per say, the only difference is the cornering speed, as it literally has a vacuum cleaner sucking it to the ground, so it can make all corners pretty much flat out. There were lots of faster cars there, but they often lack the downforce.

i just mentioned 'tight pan zooming ' tv use it to **purposely** ruin visual acceleration by not leaving enough fixed stationary reference point background in shot while zooming in faster then the acceleration rate of the car . they think we don't notice 😂

What’s crazy is I think there was more the driver could have gotten out of this by pushing harder and being more brave. But this car is incredible and thanks to the amazing engineers for letting the world see something very cool and making EV’s exciting for once
he had to be careful. Any disruption of the air under it would spell disaster. IE......no cutting corners etc.

When they speed up frame rates in old movies to simulate acceleration, that's what this looks like only real time. Incredible.

The acceleration from a standing start is insane.

A Radical has an ice not electric. My mate has a radical and you need some bloody strong neck muscles. He only uses it on track but even that is nuts.

That surely must be racing slicks on that thing not road tyres. That kind of grip can't be available from normal tyres.

Not so fast, this car is only 1.6 seconds faster than an f1 car from 1999. Who knows how fast something like the Mercedes W11 would be with C5 tyres and the MGU-k turned up to 11
F1 and other open wheel racecars have been banned from time attacks at goodwood for awhile. 2000+ that is. I'm not sure what year they designated as illegal.

There are two good reasons why it's not in a Batman film. 1)It didn't exist then 2) An actor wouldn't be a good enough driver. They'd need a stunt driver I suppose, or preferably a racing driver.

Yes this is fast, but can we take a moment to appriciate how bloody fast the vw idr is? Like this thing has FANS on it and is only just under 1 second faster than the idr, and all the idr has is normal aero and downforce. That car is mind boggling, and so is this :0000

there were similar designs in the 1970s, chaperral fan car and the brabham BT46B, both were banned from racing, a big problem was they sucked up all the rubbish from the road and threw it out the back, i noticed a similar problem with this car

The extra downforce generated by the fans does not produce drag also it can be deployed at the very start - that's incredible! Would love to see this technology develop further.
