In the old days when an animal had a broken leg, they would often be euthanized--and only if they were very lucky would they wind up with a leg cast.. Derrick Campana wants to put those days in the past. He's creating prosthetics and casts for all manner of animals--from cats to llamas, dogs to elephants, even cows and deer. He's been called the real life Dr. Doolittle--or even the 'bionic vet' for his work melding animal and machine. Freethink's Chase Pipkin went to his workspace to talk to him about his journey from creating prosthetics for humans to making them for pets and exotic animals. He discusses his creative ideas for keeping prosthetic limbs affordable how he gets animals from cats to elephants walking again by making each and individualized prosthesis.

I have seen other vet videos where they are doing cutting edge stuff like this and the human sector is getting ideas on what can work. It is so inspiring. One area is for spines. So neat.
beautiful, love it, I also have a little stray kitten, who lost just her right back foot when she was two weeks old. I suspect she was bitten by a rat. because when I dug her out from underneath a bush at that age the rest of her siblings were all lying there, dead and half-eaten. She was obviously alone and her mother was nowhere to be found. I took her in, cleaned her, fed her and now she is just over a year. The most beautiful and caring cat I named her CHARM. The back right foot is missing, and she hobbles along well but because the tibia is there the skin is tight over the bone and I can see it is painful when she accidentally bumps it on the floor. I made her a foot, to protect the leg/skin but the challenge is to get it tied to the upper leg. She simply licks it off or shakes it till it falls off. Can anybody help me to find a way of attaching the prosthetic foot to the tibia?

My friend( ie:dog) had to have his left back leg amputated high up at the top joint due to cancer - would it be possible to have a prosthesis or not as there is no stump as such.

Hello, I have a Pitbull lab mix that was born with a deformed leg do you think you could assist him?
I have a one year old Golden retriever. That had an accident when he was 6 weeks old at the breeders that left him with a missing front paw... I cant afford 1k for a prosthetic paw, although I believe he would ba a great candidate to receive one.... Where can I get financial help to get my dog Tipper a new front leg?

I checked the prices of various pet braces/prosthetics he makes. They are actually quite reasonabe prices(so he is doing this more out of helping animals). I can guarantee, if these braces were made by a corporation and then fitted/put on in a medical facility owned by a health management corporation (like a lot of hospitals are now), the prices would easily be 10x to 50x higher for basically the same product (you have to pay the fat salaries/bonuses of all the executives that 'manage' these corporations).

Don't. He is a crook. Check out orthopets. After he waisted our time and money we still have no product that was more than paid for, but the clinic in Denver has a better reputation and staff.

They said it in the video... A limb may cost between 600-2000 dollars to manufacture...but will last the dogs lifetime.

One of my neighbors has a three legged dog, and I’m literally looking at videos to get reference me turn on making a prosthetic leg using a 3-D printer. I will borrow just the leg part like the actual thing that attaches and I have to modify it because his leg and obviously it’s different than this other dogs leg in the way that it was removed episode has a little bit of a different shape. I’m not using this as moneymaking. I just want to make something for it so I would appreciate if I can borrow this as reference material because this is the first time I’m doing this.😂😂😅

I hope the days of euthanizing pets, if they end up with a broken limb becomes a thing of the past. Only becoming an option as a last resort or a pet is deem dangerous to be put back into society.
