  • Alex Lewis was living a happy life as a stay at home Dad. After catching what he initially dismissed as a case of the flu - he became so seriously ill that all of his limbs had to be amputated to save his life.
    This is his extraordinary story of what happened to him, the people around him that pieced his life back together - and why losing his limbs was the best thing that ever happened to him.
    Thanks to Alex for taking part!

    Stories like this really make you think about how our individual lives will develop. I'm 23 years old, and to think, like, this guy when he was 23 never in a million years thought that by his current age, he'd have lost all his limbs and have his life altered in such a way. Where will we all be in 10 years? Where will we all be TOMORROW? I could climb an extension ladder tomorrow, as I have every day for the passed decade, and this time slip and fall to my death. Maybe become paralyzed for the rest of my life or something life altering like that. It's a crazy life we live. Makes you thankful for every day you can still take a breath, or step out of bed in the morning. Bless this man and all he's done in spite of his condition. Amazing story.

    • @Feellikealady99
      @Feellikealady99 Před rokem +10

      'Where will we all be tomorrow?'- are you aware (i think you are from the rest of your post) of how profound that seemingly simple question is? The future is a foreign country, and none of us know the terrain or the language. Without a belief in God, which many of us do not have, all we have is hope that tomorrow contrives to keep safe.
      I morbidly thought of serial killers the other day after watching Dahmer. Can you imagine ending up helpless in the lair of a serial killer who is about to torture you to death? That's a fate noone expects to happen to them too, and is probably the single worst fate that can befall anyone.
      Or imagine merely being hit by a car or a bus a common occurence which could kill or maim you for life.
      In fact there are an infinite number of ways to die or be injured, and it is a bloody surprise that we often reach our eighties. Growing old is a precious gift afforded to only the lucky, which is why it's so weird that people disparage and fight against it so often. There is nothing more powerful or beautiful than a contented elderly person. They've survived everything. We should all respect the old far more than we do.

    His story terrifies me.. I almost lost my hands and feet to septic shock I’m 2011.. my bowel perforated, but I wasn’t believed in a and e, so they refused to scan me, until I vomited faeces on day 5.. by that point I was dying, they ran me into theatre , gave me a colostomy, amd I ended up fighting for my life in a coma in icu.
    My hands and feet turned black and they gave me zero chance of survival, amd my friends had to say their goodbyes.. it was a miracle and when they turned life support off, I survived.
    I’ve been so traumatised by my experience, and left with life changing illnesses, since the sepsis, such as pancreatic failure, adrenal failure amd numerous auto immune diseases…
    I can relate to him seeing his Labrador.. my cats were what pulled me through..I couldn’t leave my fur babies and of course my friends, so I fought like hell to survive… I remember fighting for every breath in icu.. it has left me with such severe ptsd and I’m so terrified of dying, because what I went through mentally and physically for the 2 and a half months in hospital was prolonged unimaginable pain and suffering.

    Fellow alcoholic: it's not seriously within the scope of discussion here but it's interesting how briefly he touched on his alcohol use before the amputation. He seems to begrudgingly admit it but that's most likely why the illness almost killed him. It lowers your body's immune response and makes you not care for yourself. Another risk of heavy drinking nobody really talks about...

    • @OfficialMyxomatosis

      Thank you. The only child of a lifelong alcoholic here, he refused to admit it his entire life. Even when I ran away at 16 because of his drinking, but I returned two years later. The stress of my leaving brought his M.S. out of remission, and I had to go back and care for him.
      He was never abusive. He drank away his trauma.
      He still never talked about it when he was dying of cancer at 52 years old when I was 26. One nurse in the oncology suite said, "Wow-those M.S. drugs did a number on your dad's brain all these years. His scan just now was worse than swiss cheese." For the first time in my life, I broke OUR invisible Father/daughter's secret of shame and replied, "No, he never took M.S. meds. He's just a drunk. And gin, if you have it."

      I'm currently 26 and I use every opportunity to get drunk and consume weed, also to escape from trauma. Also a heavy smoker. I used to take antidepresants and whatnot, been to multiple therapists and psychiatrists, and none of the meds or therapies ever helped.
      It makes me want to quit, honestly, thinking about my future children, which I'll probably never have, because I'm an asshole of a person whom nobody cares about and there's not a woman out there that would bear me children... at least, not a woman that I would want. Then again, I have nothing going on for me, nothing to show for, nothing worthwhile.

God humbled HIMSELF took on FLESH Live a PERFECT SINLESS LIFE to be handed over By Ponchos Pilot to be Slapped, spit on, to be flogged to the degree all HIS bones were showing, forced to Carry HIS cross only to be crucified on it.... Buried in a rich man's tomb... 3 days later rose from the dead defeating death so that we too Can have everlasting life with HIM If we repent and believe the Gospel

      Jesus said MY sheep hear MY voice and I know Them and "they" follow ME.

    I recently spilled a great deal of smoking hot oil on myself. Started a house fire in the process. Third degree, "full thickness" burns. Back of my right hand and around my wrist, left fingers, down my belly, my left shin, the tops of both feet, and the underside of my right foot. Melted the clothing right off me. I haven't really felt sorry for myself, per se, I attacked my physical therapy with persistence and vigor, and I'm getting better, despite my seemingly inevitable scars. However, I've had a severe case of "FML" for months now. I am certainly not becoming any happier by watching this, but it does put things in perspective. It shows me that while a lot is upsetting me about life right now, I still have cause to be thankful. I truly hate the "it could be worse!" argument, but it's infallible.

      It does help and it's worth digging into. Ultimately, only you can look after your mind, and whether you find peace and live a happy life, or exist in turmoil, will come down to what you choose to do with your mind and how much effort you put in. There's a great book called The Art of Happiness written by the Dalai Lama that is full of methods on how to think in order to reduce suffering and increase happiness. Very simple and accessible, but very profound in its benefits. You have the power in your mind to gain so much benefit from this situation that one day you are glad it happened. That's quite a statement, aye? But that's my challenge to you. You can do it.

      @FigaroHey Před 2 lety

      We choose to do good or evil. If we choose to do evil, then evil happens to somebody. If we choose to be drunk all the time, for example, we can take risks that we would not take if we were sober, and make mistakes that we would not make if sober, and that will have natural consequences for us, for other people, and even for generations to come, in ways that might even be invisible to us (you and I are probably suffering from crap our long-dead ancestors did that created negative patterns in our health or family dynamic, for example). Plus, the world has certain laws to it: there are germs in the world, viruses, etc. And suffering can come when we get sick. The problem with your reasoning is two-fold. First, you seem to want human beings to be something like dolls that God plays with, so that any time a human being wants to do something wrong or stupid, God should just step in, cancel the person's free will, and make that person unable to make a choice or do what they want to do. But free will means free will: make your choices; take the consequences. Most of the evil that happens in the world happens because someone makes a bad decision somewhere along the line, and others are hurt. God doesn't stop us doing stupid or bad things because being God - making us, and having total freedom himself NOT to have made us in the first place - God gives people the breath-taking freedom to choose the good (i.e., choose to live the way God made us to live, according to the 'operating manual' for human happiness), or choose the evil. But if we choose the evil, we get the evil: he's not going to step in and take away the consequences of our actions because that would be to take away our freedom, and without freedom to choose against our own good, we would be dogs or cats or trees. But of course, we already have animals and plants. No need to make more of them. The second flaw in your logic is the assumption that suffering is meaningless. It is not meaningless if you know how to turn it into good. Someone like this man might have drunk himself to death and lived a useless, wasted life, harming himself, his son, his wife, his business and everyone related to him, his son's future children and marriage dynamic, etc.. Instead, he is turning suffering - which happened because of the laws of nature - into inspiration for other people. The topic is a LOT more deep and rich than that, but you'd have to read something like Thomas Aquinas to grasp the depth of it, not just talk about it in comment boxes with the chattering class.

    Just amazing to see how love built up this man again. That friend truly has a heart of gold. He knew the importance of his friend gaining confidence through independence. Relearning how to do things with this new situation is major.

    Is so amazing to see an update about this case, i remember when the documentary came out, it was heartbreaking, this gentleman is such a fighter, and his wife too, his mouth has blended pretty well by now. God bless him and his family and pet dog.

    It would have been nice to hear more about his relationship with Lucy. In the documentary years ago Lucy had been quite honest and said he originally had no real interest in getting married, even though she kept asking him.
    In this video he puts his success and survival down to his son, his best friend and his dog, but no real recognition towards the missus. I didn't feel him radiate a great deal of warmth towards her in the conversation. He doesn't discuss the hardship of not being able to properly touch or hug her. I wonder if they have split up. I thought they had eventually gotten married but I'm not sure.
    It was interesting to hear him discuss his previous issues with alcohol. I don't think that was mentioned in the longer documentary. But he seems to be in a better place and his face has healed considerably well considering all the surgeries.

      agreed. he never talks of her much. in later videos/articles she is referred to as his wife, and also partner, but i'm not convinced that they ever actually married. i've never heard him say it. they are still together though, and joke about it. who knows, maybe its their thing, something personal to them that they don't want the public to know.

    This is the one that hit me the most. What a strong man with a great support network, especially his mate. There is know way I could/would want to live having gone through what this man has. But to go through all that and keep on keeping on. Being a father. Help others in need and not give up. That takes a hardy individual with some serious grit and determination. Big respect.

    My brother was in the ICU for sepsis right after he was born and I'll never forget the fear I had for that whole month. This man went through it personally while being completely aware of the problems he had and still fought to survive. I've got a lot of respect for that. I couldn't even cope with it happening to my brother I can't imagine having the strength for pull through it myself. I screamed at any god I could think of out of anger they would let something like that happen and I don't even believe in a god. My brother ended up pulling through and despite some organ issues he's now just a normal kid who happens to need regular doctors appointments. One of his kidneys is dead and the other is slowly but surely failing but luckily I'm a pretty good match and both of mine are still kicking so when it comes to it he'll have what he needs. The NHS is life changing in a way most people could never understand until they TRULY need it. I didn't understand until I was told he was healthy enough to go home with us and when I found out about private healthcare in places like America I couldn't believe it. If he had those problems there we would still be paying off the initial surgeries and ICU stays. That's not even mentioning all the necessary follow up appointments and medications he's needed since. It's terrifying to think people out there have to go through that. Please people support free healthcare wherever you are from. It saves lives. IT SAVES LIVES.

    I really love Alexes story. He completely opened himself up to life, and his illness was the trigger that he used/needed. I think many of us would do the exact opposite in his situation, so I salute him. Good job man, turning your life around takes everything out of a person.
