- The SRB segments for NASA's Artemis 2 Space Launch System are being transported to Kennedy Space Center. The train carrying the segments went through Lawrence, Kansas, at around 7 p.m. CDT Sept. 21, 2023, on its way to Florida from Utah -- a 2,800-mile journey. The lead locomotive was Union Pacific's No. 1943 "The Spirit."
The journey started Sept. 19, and takes about a week to complete. The railcars with the segments will be transferred from Union Pacific to Norfolk Southern Railroad in Memphis, Tennessee, Florida East Coast Railway in Jacksonville, and then the NASA Railroad in Titusville.
