Why The Ash-12 Doesn’t Always One Shot PMCs

- Ever wondered if the ASh-12 can one tap PMCs to the thorax wearing Class 5? Today we run down the ASh-12 vs armor, along with the ammo and builds that make it work - and you might be surprised to find out how cheap it ends up being once you have the right trader levels for it!
All the ammo for this weapon does over 100 starting damage, which is really quite incredible when you compare it against other rounds in Tarkov, and the best round PS12B is now more accessible than it has been before. This is because it switched with 762 BP to be locked behind Punisher 5, where previously it was the reward for Grenadier.
However, there are some interesting ballistic effects - especially around damage mitigation on the higher tier armors that we look into in this video.

Can confirm, sniping with Ash-12 is weird and interesting. One of the things to watch for: get the range EXACTLY right, the scope zero drifts pretty hard between increments.

I did SBIH with the ASH a couple wipes ago. It was great. That gun sings the siren song of the Chad's and brings ALL the PMCs to the yard.
Gotta love the absolutely bonkers dmg and pen values in this game. Can we just take a moment to notice that the 5.7 sb193 (62 grain bullet) does more dmg and pen than 5.56 m855 (also a 62 gran bullet) except the m855 is going 3 times faster. Lol if your not a gun person bullet weights are measured in grains. So unless sb193 has some kind of tandem shape charge with a HE backer these numbers are insane.

while you're not wrong about tarkovs jank bullet stats, looking at you 9x39 and 300 black out. in the case of sb193 more damage does make some sense as it is a JHP vs FMJ more pen though, yeah no idea.

Damage IRL is dependant on many factors so smaller round could cause more damage.
And Penetration IRL is heavily correlated with speed and weight- the materials play a huge deal as well.
I dont think Sb193 is an AP round but if constructed so-it could have similar damage and penetration to m855- the speed and weight arent the only factors
The ash 12 is my favorite gun because its literally a .50 cal and the sounds it makes when the shells hit the floor is sooooooo good
glad to see the ASh-12 getting more recognition for how nutty it is, though it makes me more worried it'll get a nerf, or make PS12B even harder to get. It was my gun of choice last wipe, and with high ergo and good reaction time, it is probably one of the best close-mid range guns in the game. I just treat it like a DMR with a panic switch when I'm outside. When I'm inside, it's just total chad time because you can push virtually anything and win.
PS12B is great because it does so much damage that even if you are fighting out in the open and you don't get those thorax shots, you're immediately blacking any limb you hit and likely to cause a heavy bleed. The damage spill over from a limb hit is enough to get people into panic mode. Twice this wipe I've been on the receiving end of PS12B where it penetrated through my arm and into my thorax and it leaves you absolutely devastated. It's hard to even fight back when you get hit with the ASh. Phenomenal gun, great fun, I run it loud with the Hera Arms CQB foregrip and make sure to put on a couple iron sights for ergo, and then just slap on a holo sight. I rarely bother to suppress it because it's still going to shatter eardrums when suppressed - main reason I suppress it is for the muzzle flash, but most of the time I'm going loud and proud.
honestly if they nerf the Ash-12 in any way it just shows how fucking brainless BSG truly are lmao. anyone who uses the Ash and has success with it deserves that success tenfold.
6:49 - that is actually realistic and like IRL. Basically, the reason why ASH and VSSK use enormous and very heavy 12.7x55 ammo is that they are subsonic, and the only way to carry damage on subsonic ammo is weight. On supersonic weapons the most of damage comes from speed, but high speed = high drag and that means that bullet damage drops off quick quickly, whereas on heavy subsonic bullet, there is not much speed to speak off, so there is little drag affecting it and they are very capable up-to 300m. Now whereas for supersonic it is drag that limits the range, for heavy subsonic it is gravity which limits the range. They would still hurt further away, but they start to have quite big arc due to gravity... and the bullet acts more like artillery shell rather than bullet.
Very nice explanation. I like to add a few points tho my friend. Damage comes from the kinetic energy which pretty much is the result of velocity and mass. Therefore a "slow" bullet with more mass can have the same kinetic energy as a "fast" bullet with less mass. Pretty much what u said.
High speed doesn't always mean high drag either. There are alot of factors that play into drag, especially supersonic speed or the Reynolds number and a non laminar flow. So a supersonic bullet could essentially have less "specific" drag compared to a subsonic bullet.
The limiting factor for range is always gravity. In theory the drag is going to reach near 0 with a minimal speed.

@@RobinsonHuso94 Yes I am sure you correct. The drag really depends on the shape of the bullet than anything else and therefore both supersonic and subsonic bullets can have same drag coefficient.
What I meant to say is that at high speed the resulting drag is what is causing most slow down and less speed = less energy. This is less of an issue for subsonic bullets as they are slow to begin with and most of penetration is achieved by mass anyway, so they are less affected by drag.
Doubling the speed quadruples the drag

This is awesome you put this out today because this is my first full wipe and this morning was my first day running the ash. I like it because I can one tap scavs with one shot so that’s what I have liked about it on my few raids with it

it had to happen at some point, the ash has been my main gun for 2 wipes now, people sleep on it like crazy when its round is in some ways similar to .338 fmj (if it was subsonic, but still), fired semi auto from a snappy 50-60k gun,

I run my Ash-12 with a suppressor and a magnified holographic. It's a very capable DMR that can be used as an assault rifle in close quarters, and the subsonic ammo makes it surprisingly quiet for such a large round.

This gun has actually performed one of the best this whipe. It obviously has a weird recoil pattern for leading shots, but if your enemy is in fro t of you a full auto mode of it has an odd recoil pattern in that if you shoot center mass the next shot usually head shots. The only issue I've seen is the massive weight of it if you are actually carrying a respectable amount of 20 round mags, repack and a heavy level 5 armor. Not regen becomes an issue real quick

i really enjoy the ash as single tap weapon, or with the rsh i have with my .357 and .50 two likely Sidearms for my loadout
(i take an sidearm to every raid next to my main gun, mainly to engage scavs or hitten Enemys. Or in emergency situation)

recently got 12b unlocked and started stockpiling, great timing as always!
When I'm not really looking for 12b, I find it at ammo spawn locations on maps like Woods and Customs where ammo boxes usually spawn. That's if you don't want to buy it on the flea

One thing I'll add on the sniping part, that bullet speed *really* hurts when it comes to a moving target. Since your bullet is so slow shooting at ~290-300 meters the bullet will take an entire second (where as a 900m/s would take a third of that) meaning you need to REALLY lead your shots by a much larger margin which is very difficult at times.

I have been slumming it with ps12 bc I'm slacking on punisher, I love the mcb barter, 60k rubles and you get the suppressor too, I hope that barter doesn't blow up after this video lol. Fyi irl the ps12a round is supersonic and actually pretty fast. It would be cool if they implemented that to give the round a cool niche as like the long range leg meta round
all I ran last wipe was ash 12 even the lower tier rounds are good just hip fire it up close the fire rate to damage is just godly

i ran a ash12 after buying a few bullets at a time for a week to run with a good amount and magazines were hard to get as well. Not a high level with traders so yea. But it was dog water, i was hitting skavs chest with no armor and with armor and they would soak up 4 and 5 shots at times. Drove me crazy, i blew through all the rounds i brought so quickly having to put so many rounds into skavs. It was one of those raids they just wouldnt stop coming, i think i had 14 killed by the time i died to a pmc when i had to start using a skav weapon

This thing about armor always reducing damage, regardless of penetration has made me curious about something.
Can M995 with 42 damage one-tap a head with helmet regardless of penetration? What about SSA AP with 38 damage?
At certain ranges no it can't! SS AP even worse. The higher the pen, the less reduction there is so vs a Ulach for example you wouldn't expect much reduction. It's a bit tricky but at around 200m you'll deal sub 35 damage and won't get the kill

Grab the ASH-12 and go around blasting people in DORMS - until I'm dead or no-one is left.
Biggest downside for me that wasn't mentioned is the weight. The gun and bullets are heavy as shit, basically impossible to not go into a raid overweight with it
using this shit on factory full auto is insane even if you have 10 rounders they normally get dropped in the first 3 bullets

PS12A - RSH-12 - Pistolings on Factory it is devastating
Considering the gun is so cheap, and the only aviable low tier ammo is the one that has no pen. I wonder if in this level 3 armor world we now live in, it might actually be usefull now. Idk 165 dmg per shot feels like a lot, if you just generously apply that over someone's body that would probably cause some issues.
Its kind of funny that a 7kg gun has better ergo than a 4.5kg gun with a drum mag
2 wipes back I would chill near radar on reserve and pick people off at knights with the ash12. Was it effective? No. Fun and manly giggle inducing? yes.
I don't know how you guys, but the cut off top of the screen really bothers me. Author can't properly regulate the screen capture size by default? Or there any other reason behind that?
Basically I'm waiting for fibre & all my clips have the ping warning at the top. It's super off putting so I'd rather cut off the corner

Kind of, but the pen against Class 5 isn't the same deal. 42 is much worse than 46 from a Class 5 specific perspective

Take the Monstrum and set it to 100m - the top of the circle reticule is 50m and the bottom ~140m. Then you just have to remember one set of holds 📐🎯
At night you're shooting way inside 200m anyway.
