  • Learn wilderness survival skills each time you go out. How to find fatwood and how to find the best fatwood. It’s not about quantity it’s about finding the best quality of fatwood for fire making.
    Resin impregnated pine wood is commonly known in the bushcraft community as fatwood. It is most commonly used by woodsman around the world for fire lighting but there are many more ways of making this wood useful. In parts of the world the roots of pine trees where the pine resin is mostly present is used to make turpentine and other products like glues and water barriers for stoping posts from rotting.
    Fatwood can be harvested from dead pine tree limbs, old pine tree trunks and the roots of pine trees, the resin usually collects in the core of the tree trunk and mostly lower down. This new woodland is full of resources so I’m sure we will be back with lots more adventures.

    Very well done video Alexandre. You have covered something here which I have not seen on other videos and is totally true. The dead branch method will only yield a couple of centimetres of fat wood and as you say, is not great quality. Always better in the roots. So many videos out there where I think people don’t really know what they are doing.

    A couple of tips: 1) never saw towards your brace leg, if you slip, because all your weight is on it, you can't move it out of the way fast enough to avoid injury. 2) when "striking" move your knife spine down by the material you want to light holding it in place and then draw your fero rod upwards instead of the knife, less movement and more control of the spark. And you need less length on the fero, which means it will last longer, (2" at a time) : Things I have learned the hard way, LOL

      @BeeOutdoors  Před 5 lety +2

      Grimm Liberty awesome comment and always happy to learn, this is the exact thing I try to encourage on my channel, no matter how long one has been doing bushcraft for there is always things to learn and as we are creatures of bad habit sometimes we do the very things we should not do. Michael Gabriel fat wood comes from trees in the Pinaceae family like pine spruce etc. And most of the resin concentrate is in the core and roots.

  • @uniteamerica9446
    @uniteamerica9446 Před 3 lety +1

    That's really nice wood, 1 strike. You used a lot of energy getting it though. I saw another video and the guy literally spent 1:58seconds from first cut on tree to ready to strike the fire. It took 3 strikes but he used a lot less energy. Thank you for the video though, I didn't take the time to make one. I'm just making an observation thumbs up.

    • @BeeOutdoors
      @BeeOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Totally agree with you, there are way easier and faster ways to get to fat wood but as this is a demonstration my energy was not a priority. Go out prepared and you will not need to use too much effort, a year later and I’m still using fat wood from this haul. Thanks for the comment 💪
