- The plaintiff hired the defendant to cater her birthday party. The food she tasted before the party was not the same quality as the food he served. The plaintiff is suing for a refund because her party was ruined as a result. The defendant says he was cooking the food when he received a call from a store saying the chicken was recalled. The defendant scrambled and had to find new chicken at the last minute. Besides, the defendant believes he provided great food and denies owing.

I'm with everyone who thinks $1500 was cheap for 100 guest and all the food she received. Since quantity wasn't the issue she should've paid more to get better quality.

Judge Milian knows a lot about construction but not much in this area. Judge Judy knows a lot about having a party and how much vendors are charging for their service so she would've let her know she got a steal for the budget she had and the menu that was served. The man is very humble though, he just found himself in a bind.

She only expected what he told her he would provide- that isn't "extravagent" at all! She didn't order burgers and expect lobster. She ordered broccoli and didn't get it. Among other things...wine, champagne, etc.
She WAS a bit too much though... I think I actually agree with the judge on this one. She deserved something, but not as much as she asked for.

I agree with the judge’s ruling. Even though the quality didn’t meet the plaintiff’s expectations, her 100 guests still had food to eat. The defendant needed to pay a penalty for being late and serving undercooked and underseasoned food, but $500 would have been too much. As Judge Judy says: “don’t finish the steak and demand a refund”.

In these cases I would love to see pictures of food left over after the party that nobody wants to touch it. One other thing to add I get it's not what she ordered but if there was recall on the chicken he can not serve it. The party was not ruined people ate had fun. Some money but NOT all of the money should be refunded.
She didn't want ALL the money refunded. She wanted $500 back. The wine and champagne was missing. Broccoli was missing. Messed up on the chicken. Sweet potatoes were dry.
