  • As Roy Keane is linked with a return to international football as Ireland's assistant manager BBC Sport recalls how his countries World Cup 2002 preparations were rocked by Keane's infamous bust-up with team manager Mick McCarthy.
Keane flew home before the tournament kicked off in Japan, and the Republic went on to qualify for the last 16 where they lost to Spain on penalties.

Irony is, it wound up being the ROI's last World Cup knockout appearance and indeed last World Cup appearance at time of writing, only going out to Spain on penalties.

@@Div4Dante He was set up. Accused of pulling a sickie on the away leg of the playoff v Iran. Scurrilous accusation in front of the whole team. Was Roy to say nothing? Especially after the joke of the conditions in Saipan, wrecked pitch and no gear or footballs? Obviously Roy grew to expect a level of professionalism in the game from his time at United. But no, this manager dishing out the worst of shit you could level at a professional player playing for his country, at an already-tense juncture? Idiot..
Poor McCarthy, his skin was that thin that he couldn’t take a bit of abuse? Refused to renege on sending him home too?

Roy should have just waited till he saw the permanent base they were flying out to they were only staying there for a few days and it was really meant for the players to relax for a few days always makes me wonder what could have been on that Sunday when we played Spain

To be fair, imagine coming from Fergie as a manager, who Keane would've looked up to, as well as the perfect preparation in terms of training facilities at Manchester United,, then having Mick the biggest airhead manager in football. I know it was disgraceful behaviour from Keane, but also unacceptable for Republic of Ireland management to accept such pathetic facilities.

Fergie was the one who convinced Roy to stay initially when he wanted to go home. McCarthy sent Keane home after attacking him in front of his teammates and accusing him of feigning injury for different matches which Roy didn't accept and he rightly gave it back to him. Get your facts right
