Cosmetic chemist here, just wanted to talk about the shelf life issue. Essentially the date is how long it’s been tested to still last in “opened” conditions without the preservative breaking down. So in some instances yes, a product will last much longer, but it hasn’t been tested so you’re taking a gamble each time you use it past that date.
High risk products that I would never recommend using after their expiry are:
Open jar products - so basically anything where you put your hand into the jar or container directly.
Products with plant extracts - these are wonderful food for bacteria and other microorganisms, so are much higher risk.
Products where the applicator is stored inside the product (lipgloss, mascara, liquid lipstick, concealer with a doe foot applicator, anything with a similar application method). You inevitably have bacteria and other microorganisms on your skin, they then get transferred into the container after you touch the applicator to your skin, & then will try to replicate inside the product. Preservatives stop this from happening, but the preservatives become less effective with each exposure to “bad stuff”, and so it will stop working and you will end up putting bacteria and fungus on along with your product. It won’t happen immediately after the expiry date, and depending on your usage patterns, climate, storage, etc it could last well over that time, but the problem is you just don’t know when the preservative system will break down and you don’t really want to find out when you get a staph infection from it!!
Products I would happily use as long as they look/smell fine are ones that have no water or very little water - eg powders and oils.
I doubt anyone read right to the end, but if you did, hope it helps make sense of it!! 😂

It's interesting how different our preferences can be while sharing so many of the same less common niches. My dry skin/lips love dewy oily products. Tysm for addressing the appropriation aspect of "clean girl", the makeup community is so quick to appropriate "full lips" and "fox eyes" for the Kendall's and Kylie's but God forbid we mention the people who face discrimination every day for those exact same features occuring naturally.

As a person with dry skin, I agree with cream and liquid products. I much prefer powder products. Cream and liquid just slides all over the place and I have never had the longevity with them. Plus powder lasts what feels like forever. And I agree with expiration dates. Would be very expensive to repurchase make if you strictly followed the expiration dates.

I like "bronzing" my face, but I don't like any bronzers advertised for my skintone, they're too light, too saturated and/or too yellow. I've had better luck using eyeshadows/blushes/lipsticks as bronzers. I like something quite a bit darker than my skin and has a reddish nearly mauve undertone.
I like cream blushes but I think it's just easier to find a decent powder blush than it is to find a cream/liquid one.
I totally agree with you on makeup expiry dates. But I'm the opposite with mascaras, most mascaras I tried in the past didn't even make it to 3 months, and some have only lasted me a single month.
I didn't know about the origins of the "clean girl" trend/aesthetic. I really hate that name tho', if this specific aesthetic is "clean" it kind of implies that anything else is dirty (especially with the ingredient fear-mongering that goes along with a lot of the clean products). Why can't we call it "no-makeup makeup" like we did years ago?

ok soooo I did see some of these coming. I was waiting for the lipgloss and expiration dates. I for sure disagree on the lipgloss but I understand 😂
as for the expiration dates, I remember an old video of yours where you said that you've used mascaras, closed the tube, and then came back to it/them months later and they're fine. I only recently did that and...it was fine. I've held this opinion too except for mascaras and lip products but now I am 100% expiration dates don't matter. I also have literally never gotten an eye infection from using a mascara for more than 3 months... maybe that's just me.
Also re: the dewy makeup. I cannot handle my skin feeling tacky. I don't know how other people can handle it. I also have oily skin like you so maybe there's just this engrained feeling: tacky = oily = no good. BUT STILL.

Not only do I not enjoy the feel of it, they also disappear within minutes, not even hours. Powders and regular cream lipsticks are far superior, imho.

I agree with you on most of these points. The only one i disagree with is the lip gloss/lip oil trend, and cream products. I much prefer glosses or sheer lipsticks to a matte lipstick, but it's personal preference. Expiration dates, cruelty free, clean girl makeup, etc. I agree with. I've found that about the 5-6 year mark is when my eyeshadows tend to go bad and start irritating my eyes - lipsticks i'll toss about the 3 year mark, especially if they're starting to go funky or they give me a gross vibe. And yes, creams expire faster than powders, but they give a different appearance to the skin, so I do enjoy cream products. I never used to.... but my skin has dried out over the last couple of years, so i have less oils and less moisture. Powders look great when my skin is hydrated, but if I apply too much it just makes my skin look thick and makeup-y, which i hate.
Cruelty free also doesn't mean cruelty free. This was a point made when the whole NARS going into China thing came up years ago. Even in Europe, where pre-market animal testing is banned, post market animal testing is still legal. Every country in the world does this, but they'll only do it with products that are reported to have many bad side effects. Not sure if this has changed since then. I try and buy from brands that are cruelty free, but i'm also trying to spend most of my money for colour cosmetics in indie brands, or buying 2nd hand. Depop in Australia, once I discovered it, was VERY bad for my bank account. lol. But! I got some high end products that were literally brand new or only swatched for half price - better discounts than what you'd find at Sephora.

Fun video! It reminds me of the "unpopular makeup opinions tag" from a few years ago.
Also as a POC viewer: Thank you for your take on cruelty free and the clean girl trend. 1) There is is little to no regulation of that term in the United States. Exploitation, bad working conditions, etc. shouldn't go overlooked and I don't think it's inherently better to buy cruelty free if the brands are severely lacking somewhere else like with shade range or if the owners/spokespeople are rude and unprofessional. 2) The clean girl look is just minimal, natural makeup and I hate that there's only one kind of image associated with it. I know it's probably called "clean" due to using many beauty products that are vegan, natural, free of preservatives, etc. but white women mostly being the face of it suggests that cleanliness is equivalent with being white and light skinned (and there's a very negative history associated with that as well). Not saying this is why it started or what people are trying to promote, but the implications are kind of damaging.

I absolutely agree with you on liquid highlighters!!! They're such a menace I swear. I had one and I recently threw it away. It came in a glass bottle with a dropper but the product solidified inside the container after 6 months of purchase! It was such a waste of money. It would also look strange on top of blush, plus I realized that I just didn't like highlighters lol.
And yes I particularly detest the dewy look on myself! I don't wear foundation or concealer but I put on like 5 thin layers of translucent power all over my face which initially looks a little powdery but my combination skin does its magic after a while and the powder settles into a soft matte finish and lasts that way throughout the day!!
My specific hot take will be illuminating blushes! Even the least shimmery kind leaves this annoying veil of unflattering shimmer all over my face. I prefer matte powder blushes since the look the most skin like on my bare skin. Also, highlighters in general I find for myself to be redundant. I will inevitably get oily throughout the day which defeats thr purpose of applying highlighter at all!!

I love powder products, they blend so fast, the color is more impactful, powder over moisturized well prepped skin gives a glow form within look rather than greasy, and looks much better in pictures. You cannot even set dewey makeup enough where it will still look dewey but not transfer. I did a dewey look two weeks ago for an event (sometimes I am in the mood for a really dewey look even though I prefer a satin or matte look most of the time). I just felt sticky. I dont try to attempt dewy look either considering my makeup tends to fade all the time and give me that dewy look anyways.
Cream and liquid products dont work for me either. The only thing cream that work was using my matte lipstick as blush but that too also tends to fade as well and hooded eyes are not cream eyeshadow friendly.
I am the type that needs bronzer because of color matching. In the winter i become light medium while during the summer i become medium tan to tan. Therefore bronzer a mixing medium for me and a powder to put on the edges of my temple.
The only product that i tend to keep expiration dates is foundation because i get bad acne when i put expired foundation and mascara for the same reason i get infection to easily.
Actually a little history lesson, It was Edwardian times that started the clean face trend a long time ago considering make up was looked down upon. Just like modern times, women would only stick to slightly rouge blush for a more natural look and tinted lip. The trend was an all natural look of smooth no blemish skin with a sight tint.

I don't buy lipgloss or non matte lipsticks anymore. Haven't in years. I hate reapplying makeup during the day other than if I ate something with oil. I hate the feeling of lipgloss on my lips. I'm with you on expired products. I'm the same with makeup, skincare, as I am with food. Unless there is a change in smell, texture, or color, I'm using it. I'm in my late 30s and have used all this crap most of my life and haven't gotten sick yet. We already have microorganisms living inside our bodies and on our skin and hair. You can sterilize products as well but I don't do that. The only makeup I find that goes bad are liquid products. I've had mascaras and eyeliners go bad but that's just in terms of drying. Powders in general are the way to go like you mentioned especially loose powders. I just never cared for powdered products with the exception of 1 powdered foundation, and a couple setting powders. Also not a huge fan of cream products. It is kind of difficult to apply them selectively, they go everywhere and move around if you don't set them. I like to use powder blushes and bronzers because they give me more of a chiseled look, can be ageing, but you win and loose. I also intentionally buy powder over cream products if I am buying higher end cosmetics because I plan to use them close to a lifetime (jk, approx. 5-10 years). They better last me, if I am spending $50+ on a huge highlighter or blush, lol. :D I use around 3-4 mascaras a year, oftentimes 2 different ones for 6+ month at a time. Love how lipgloss looks, it literally brightens my face, but I don't like that it doesn't last at all. I hate reapplying gloss every 1-2 hours when on the go. Also, gloss in combination with a windy day and open hair is a disaster. I am still looking for a liquid lipstick/stain that stays on for hours, but gives me juicy, moisturized lips that also happens to be transfer proof - a girl can dream. :D

I dont like concealer and although I have bronzers I end up using as blush. I actually love bullet, matte lipsticks. I have dry skin so I can live without any face powder. I do have a few cream blushes I like.i prefer liquid highlighter under makeup and primer does nothing for me. Setting spray might also be another useless item for me. I once had a mascara over a year. I had no idea you only use for 3 month at the time. Oops

Hard agree on the gloss thing. I hate how it looks on me and feels and sticks to everything. I do love the T28 in comparison to others, but I much prefer a tinted balm since it doesn’t get in my hair the way a gloss or oil does

Depending on your coloring bronzer can completely muddy your face, especially if your fair or cool toned.

I don’t like lipglosses either. A lot of people seem to like them and I think it looks cool on them, it just isn’t for me. I’m very particular with lipsticks, I only like matte ones and also still like liquid lipsticks.
Loove blushes they’re my favorite, I like all types powder, liquid and cream with all types of finishes. For bronzer: I used to think it was unnecessary now I’m starting to really like it.

you should try mixing a cream blush with a liquid/cream highlighter and store it in a small container! it creates a beautiful glow and you can adjust the highlighter ratio whem you're mixing it:) i think you'd love it❣️

I’ve heard of people doing that but I find that the Milano luminoso blush gives a similar effect!

and do you like it? maybe you could try mixing a different shade of cream blush for a new tone of a glowy blush

I believe bronzers look good on almost nobody xD
Lip glosses really may not match with people that have undertones that harmonize better with matte, less saturated colors

I do have a highlighter cuz I found them to be so pretty, but I literally can't use lol, I like very minimal, natural makeup, so it just doesn't work for me, I guess I need to give to somebody or use it on my eyes

I strongly disagree with using old makeup, especially lip products and eye products. Maybe because I have perioral dermatitis and I appreaciate my health more than a material product. Yes, some products are fine, but I'm mortified to see some people using 4-5 year old lipsticks. You do you, but I'm telling you "I never had any problems" goes so far until you have that problem and you wish you were more conscious (speaking from my own experience too).
I like lip gloss, but it depends on the gloss, so I'm very picky. I have a bronzer, but I only use it as an eyeshadow right now, because I don't like it as a bronzer either :D I just like my skintone and that's that, no need to bronze it. The only cream product I like - revlon eyeshadow :D
By the way, have you ever read "Animal liberation" by Peter Singer? I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but this book made me way more conscious and lower my animal product consumption. I liked that you mentioned how cruelty can also be against human animal (yes, that's a term :D). I always found it very cringy when specific animal lovers would say how much they love animals, but they hate people. I understand thet sometimes it's a joke, but in some cases, it's just purely cringe :D Let's try to be as kind as possible to all animals, including humans.
