    Doing a makeup inventory was definitely the biggest help for me to reduce spending. For me it’s about not being as wasteful. I love trying new blushes and lip products but the inventory has stopped me from buying new ones since I would have to add it to my spreadsheet and physically see the number get farther away from my goal. Now if something catches my attention I think it over for a few weeks or months before buying. It’s interesting how different things can be motivating to different people.

    Probably my biggest way of avoiding spending is, putting away some of my makeup each season. When I bring out a palette or blush I have stored away for 3-5 months, it's like getting something new & seeing an old friend all at once. And because it's usually something I look forward to using each spring, fall, winter holiday etc., there's an extra hit of adrenaline.

    I did a make-up no buy in 2019 and at first my goal was a 3-month no buy. Then , I kinda got used to it and each month I tried to extend it further. Eventually I managed to only buy some mascaras and a brow pencil during a whole year.🙂 I'm thinking of doing a low buy this year, as I'm quite content with my collection.

It helps a lot when you're trying to buy less makeup and you are always exposed to all the new stuff that is coming out to the market everyday.

    I started keeping a log of all my expenses this year, because I felt like I was spending a lot of money. But when I actually analyzed my spending, it amounted to about $100 per month - which I found was reasonable. And because I didn't have any purchases I regretted making last year, I'm just happy with monitoring my purchases since I'm such a frugal spender to begin with.

    I'm doing a no-buy for Jan-March this year.. If I slip up and buy something on impulse, it adds another month to my no-buy.. 😊
    I did slip up in first week of January... Hence now my no buy is until april😂 but it's effective enough that now wenever I feel an impulse to buy, I'm reminded that I can't buy any thing for another month👏

    I'm on a no buy for the first time. I feel like I'm always 0 or 100% so I just go for a no buy to close a window of temptation. You're one of those people who made me realize to make my collection more curated and be mindful if the product I buy will add value to my collection. So thank you. Currently I didn't buy anything since the year start. Anw, you cat tail is complimenting your top hihi so cute!

    I like to add things to my cart on a website, and then go look at my collection. Sometimes I find I have something very similar to a product I am about to buy and I take it out right away. I also make myself wait a couple days before I place the order. I often change my mind...or occasionally completely forget I had even looked at something.

    This year I’m sticking to a pretty strict no-buy. I have plenty in all categories, and I would like to get my numbers down. I started the year with a few purchases, regretted them when I saw my inventory numbers go up (though I’m still happy about trying those products!), and decided I’m done shopping for the year. Wish me luck!

    I‘m on a no buy because I just have too much makeup. At first I wanted to only do January for a start, but somehow January is almost over and I don‘t really crave anything so I‘ll just keep going. I‘m having a baby in May and want to get rid of all the clutter in my life until then 🙈 So far it‘s going quite well... If I ran out of a category of items completely I would purchase this item - but I won‘t run out until the baby finishes school or something 🤣

  • @129grimm
    @129grimm Před 3 lety +5

    I was on a low buy last year with a pretty strict budget for both replacements and new makeup. I also had some specific rules to help me curb those impulse buys that really eat up my budget, so I had a limit of two major new purchases (ie. a big order from a brand or Sephora) and I also wasn't allowed to buy lip products. I did really well so I'm continuing this year with a slightly higher budget to include skincare. I'm also going to be on an eyeshadow palette no buy until November, which I started at the end of 2020. I'd like to keep an eye on Black Friday sales in case I find myself wanting a new release over the year and it goes on sale, but I would also be happy to go the whole year without buying a palette.

  • @rachelthorne9767
    @rachelthorne9767 Před 3 lety +4

    I'm doing a low buy due to I have way to much for one person, and I tend to just buy whatever I want. My goal this year is to only replace things, and I'm only allowing myself 2 eyeshadow palettes this year. (I literally bought the same pallete twice last year, because I have so much and forgot I already had it)

    Last year I definitely overspent as a way to make myself feel better. I'm on a no buy for the first 3 months of the year and then a monthly budget that will carry over each month. I am doing well with it so far. I find the temptation is so much lower no that I have made it not an option.

  • @ivalakossweet2236
    @ivalakossweet2236 Před 3 lety +2

    I am doing a no buy year in 2021. I started keeping inventory in the end of 2019, plus tracking down how much I have spent on each product of the make up in that spreadsheet (also eye opening). I am feeling good, not tempted to buy anything as I just want to enjoy all the products I have already. Doing a project pan to make sure I use up the older products (as I keep track of that as well). Just trying to be more aware of the consumption and not letting anything go to waste. By the end of the year, I plan to shrink down my collection in general (well except eye shadow palettes - not panning anything there). And I have started a blog (to keep myself accountable) about my journey :)

    I think what’s helped me so far was to not allow myself to buy a wishlist item until February. Also just finding other interests besides makeup and seeing less makeup vids. Lately I’ve been into watching budget planning videos and animal videos so that takes a big chunk of my yt watching now haha instead of all makeup vids. Also tracking my spending and saving towards something stops me from even wanting to buy makeup

    Omg the tail in the back 😻😹 This video was so timely, I’ve been taking stock of my stuff and really considering what I want to stop buying for a while. The hardest part for me is who/what I watch/follow online. You are one of the very few beauty content creators I can follow without feeling pressured to buy stuff. I hate having to unfollow creators I’ve previously really loved, but I can definitely see their influence in my purchases over the last couple years at times. I want to try the category goal version like you do. I also want to pay more attention to the company I’m supporting in terms of eco-friendly, human-friendly, ethical, fair trade, etc., practices - I think forcing myself to pay attention to those things will dramatically limit where I can shop lol.

  • @Krysprinkle
    @Krysprinkle Před 3 lety +2

    This year is my first low buy. I've set up a calendar in an excel spreadsheet and I'm marking off the days in different colours depending on whether I purchased a replacement, an unnecessary purchase or whether I bought nothing at all. I made my no purchase days my favourite colour so it's motivating for me to see the days marked off in a satisfying colour. 😂 Simple things for my simple mind.

  • @OpenOurHearts
    @OpenOurHearts Před 3 lety +2

    I use a system I’ve not seen on youtube but I’d like to volunteer it if it could be useful to anyone! I keep track of all purchases and empties throughout the year and make sure the number of empties exceeds the number of new items at the end of the year. I enjoy doing it this way because 1) I don’t feel like I have to replace products in the same category and/or only after using them up and 2) I can get away with buying four things one month and none the next, just based on what I feel like doing at the time. It’s worked well for the past two years!

    I agree-I feel like I got much more in the habit of online shopping this year, particularly over the holidays when I was buying gifts for people, and I realized that online shopping was becoming almost a default activity for me! So I gave myself a January no-buy, with two built in exceptions for products I knew were launching, just to get myself out of the habit or browsing online every time a had a break in my day! I’ve loved it. It has felt like a bit of a reset, because I had to wait to buy something and often it wasn’t as appealing a week or two later. Now I’m trying to decide if I want any rules this year or if I want to see what happens. But January has been so nice as a break!

I'm allowing myself to roll over any unspent monies to the next month, but there are some items I'm not allowing myself to purchase at all, like lip products (which I don't wear and am drowning in), some clothing items, books, subscription services, etc. I'm also doing a replacements-only system for my hair care/body care/skincare because I want to get down to one product in each category and currently have far too many extras, LOL. i found a beautiful liquid highlighter today (drugstore, so I could buy 2 shades for the price of a mac mini strobe cream) and tested it on the back of my hand and it looked so beautiful and glittery. however what stopped me from buying it was that today while applying my makeup I had swirled my highlighter brush right next to the new swatch and they looked exactly the same. I’m doing a general no buy now through the end of March though because I need to save that money since I moved and am waiting to start a new job

    I think for me a product specific no buy would be best parts of my collection are wayyy outta control (palettes and highlighters) an other parts are in check (foundations i have 1 the one i’m using) so this would work better for me. Although i do keep foundations on a replacement only thing

    I'm doing a mish mash of almost all these ways haha. I'm on a no buy for the first third of the year because I want to save money to furnish my new apartment. Then I'll be on specific category no buys and then one in-one out for the categories that aren't too crazy.

    Trying the budget system this year. $40 a month. Just makeup items. Having the list on your person while you look at your wants is a good way to make sure your within your numbers if your taking inventory as well!!!

    Great ideas! I think I've finally broken the cycle of impulse spending I've had with makeup for many years. I've finally realized just how picky I am with what I like to wear. I'm extremely fair, so most makeup looks very harsh on me. I've found that I prefer very sheer products, and only certain shades look good with my skin tone. I have those items and I don't need to chase products anymore. For instance, I found my favorite lip product and the literal perfect shade for me that I love and could wear everyday. So now I only have that one lip product. Why would I need to have others when I already have the perfect one? I don't like reds or oranges, etc. I have one perfect color that looks good with any eye look I wear. And the eye looks I like on me are also very limited. I currently have two small palettes (one 6-pan and one 8-pan). I recently purchased the Sultry palette but I've already decluttered that one because it wasn't better than what I'm using now. It was too shimmery and the mattes looked patchy. I like my subtle palettes and that's ok. I'm boring with eye shadow. I just need to accept it.

    I feel like like last year I learned all I needed to know from my low/no buy hmmm I think this year I won't do the typical low/no buy but I have goals(exa. I wanted to buy from an cool indie brand for the first time but I had an 75$ limit only spent 50$ and used a discount code as well but my next 75$ has to go toward something else(food,skincare,books) before I can get makeup again

      This also helps me even within the keeping things curated mindset in a few ways typical I would just buy from inexpensive brands(ucanbe,delanci,ccolor etc...) And just get a whole bunch were as indie brands are a lot more money so it makes you more intentional and keeps what you can get lower. I also like more uniqueness .

    I did my inventory in January this year (2024). Wow, it is eyes opening and I feel like I am an order... I got way too many products. I started a no-buy as well.

    As medium deep tan it hard find right blush or lipstick for myself. I can’t buy orange or red bronzer on my neutral skin tone. Blush is so hard to wear. I realize blush with red lip doesn’t look pretty on me

    I truly prefer to buy online, why? I see how much items I have on my shopping card and can watch them over and over just to check if it's really worth it, bc in a store sometimes I let employees persuade me and I don't like it. As well, I know i have been spending so much on makeup and skincare but I know it's bc I was missing a lot of products and with my first work, I purchased my wishlist but I know it's 4 months later but I need to start a low buy year. Thanks.

    I am kinda on a low buy. There are certain categories I don’t think I will buy either for 2021 or ever again.

    Not being able to physically go into stores has been helpful because that was my main source of impulse shopping.. even when stores open up again and things go back to normal, I will try not to do that as much..
