  • Today's video is all about consumerism in the makeup and skincare industry, how its changed over the past 10 years from huge makeup collection tour videos, to huge declutters and advocating for sustainable makeup shopping. We'll look at how buying habits have changed and why, and how this has affected the makeup industry overall.

    For me the most disturbing thing is the normality of buying high end and lux make up products to the point that owning anything budget friendly makes person immediatelly percieved as broke and not interest worthy at all. Yesterday I saw a tik tok where girl showed her make up collection and the second comment was "broke". Girl replyed with "wdym?" and the commenter said "you broke dummy". So freaking rude... Like... When did consious spending become more strange than spending 50$ on a lip gloss? People deffo need some reality check imo...

      You are so right! Also people somehow have lost touch with reality when it comes to prices and what’s considered affordable. I’ve heard so many people talk about a $25 tinted lipbalm being affordable and just something everybody should get on a whim. Sure I might pay the price but I would never consider it affordable and now it’s super normal even for young teenagers to have all the trendy and super expensive products. It’s kinda sad tbh

    I would almost surely argue that skincare is far worse in hyper consumption. It used to be makeup now it’s surely skincare and Korean skincare etc.

    The fact that as a high school student in 2016 I felt the need to own a makeup collection is insane to me. Like today I'd never even considering owning more than what I use daily which is some tinted moisturizer,mascara,eyeliner,lip liner,blush,mascara and concealer. Like that's it. Most of us don't need 10+ eyeshadow palettes.

      lol the palette thing is so accurate! I had one of those giant ones with like 100 shades in 2016 that took up my entire "getting ready" space in my itty bitty dorm room 😂 and of course I only ever used the one row that was all neutrals

    I’m about to turn 30 and I can say that I don’t buy as much makeup anymore because I’m more focused on spending money in other areas of my life. I’ve shifted to health and fitness and I spend more of my money on gym equipment, gym clothes, shoes. But I also care more about longevity. I need to be able to keep what I buy for years or else I don’t want it. I use my essential minimal makeup items and move on with my day. I can’t remember the last time I spent hundreds of dollars on a new makeup launch because I felt like I “needed to have it”. I think that time in my life is long gone.

    I haven't bought much new makeup lately either. I enjoy watching other people try new makeup but I have so much already and I stepped through the local drugstore yesterday and it was like a happy moment because everything at the drug store looked like good quality for affordable prices. So people don't need to go hard at the high end stores or buy a ton of online makeup. There's a dupe for almost everything now and having real people dispel branding mythologies about ingredients in skincare helps a lot too.

    I was a broke college student when I got into make up in 2017. I bought all the makeup I could that was within the budget, and eventually resell them because they didn't work out for me 🤦I now learned how to manage fomo. I'm still trying to use up the makeup I bought years ago lmao. 2023 edit: I had to throw out all of them because they were starting to mold/irritate my skin, of course they were more than 5 years old at this point lol. I've started a new small collection of makeup that I know works for me.

  • @talosheeg

    I'm the same, I am TERRIBLE with lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes. I bought so many of them that now I've resorted to sending some old palettes to people who turn them into paints, no idea what I can do with all my lipsticks. I've had to put a self imposed ban on buying more of either until I at least use up some of them! I don't wear makeup too often but I've definitely had the FOMO feeling. Overconsumption is crazy!

    Years ago I used to buy loads of UD eyeshadow palettes. After becoming a busy working mum, wearing makeup just fell away from me, so it expired and I had to get rid.
    Like my clothes, I now invest in pricier, high quality pieces. So now I own one Natasha Denona palette (omg it's so lush). I don't wear bright rainbow colours anymore, so I only need one nice neutral palette and one dark/grunge palette and now job done :) I hate wasting product so never again. I will only replace what I finish

    I went through a couple of years when I first got into makeup (think peak Naked palette to Naked 3). Once I realized I was into super minimal, I gave everything else to my younger sisters-in-law. They were absolutely thrilled so I'm glad the makeup was used, but it's wild to me that I put all that time and energy into something I'm not actually that into.

  • @amandaford8730

    It's interesting looking back at how I've interacted with makeup throughout the years (as a mid 30 year old). I was allowed to use makeup in high school, but it was pretty much limited to teen-friendly drugstore palettes. I only really started getting more serious when I started getting into a) goth subculture in my late teens and b) cosplaying and costuming. This was when CZcams was first starting out and people were more motivated out of fun and providing tutorials, so I followed those early makeup channels just to learn HTF to use the basics to makeup. From there it was the search to find shocking shades which neither drugstore nor designer brands really provided, so I relied on online goth/punk stores and forums to give me leads.
    I never really stuck around beauty channels to see the creation of the "beauty guru" and the rise of these neverending makeup releases and overconsumptive haul culture because I was basically settled into the style and look I was comfortable with by that time (that Coastal Scents 88 pallet went a long way, RIP). Now that all of my starter palettes are running out and most of them are discontinued, I've had to rely more on going to Ulta and poking around with other independent brands. Funny thing is that there are soooooooo many more makeup brands and palettes nowadays but it still seems that only a handful have the palettes with the "color story" I'm really looking for (it so common to find one or two cool shades in a set of 20 boring shades that you have to pay $40+ for). 😂 I guess with me I'm more willing to vye my time and money to wait and look for the right palette so the makeup FOMO phenomenon never had an effect on me. 😂 That and I'm definitely more mindful of the environmental impact of makeup so I intend to use what have like I have before.
    It is sad seeing that so many people were negatively affected by this makeup phenomenon that now there are Makeup Rehab groups. 😕

  • @IvyTinwe
    @IvyTinwe Před rokem +4

    Independant brands are better at filling niches for certain colours and palettes. I use make-up for cosplay and really colourful looks, so nude palettes bore me. I don't really buy make-up at the drugstore (besides mascaras and liquid eyeliners), because I don't find the right shades or right quality regarding colour performance.
    Colourpop shells out release after release and they look cheap and boring to me.

    I love this video and I love that we watch the same videos! I remember commenting on Trixie's video that makeup declutter videos like hers are super beneficial to someone deciding what to buy. I learn way more about a product by the youtuber's decision to keep or toss, vs outright reviews.
    I just discovered Tati this year! (Super late to the game, I know) I still enjoy her pr unboxing videos, but as someone who missed the palette craze but wants to dive into beauty now, I feel like the Tati textured neutrals palette was the one that got away for me. The holy grail palette that had every color I'd ever need, actually use and looked like it was laid out by an adult in a way that made sense instead of the random jumble of colors that really turned me off to buying palettes in the first place. I'd love to see more videos of people showing off the staples they've used for years.
    As far as makeup expiring, I think it's okay to keep powders. I just bought alcohol and a spray bottle to regularly sanitize my dry goods. It's the liquids that become a breeding ground for bacteria. Mascara is the big non-negotiable, must regularly replace product for me. But honestly, I've been using the same 9 pan palette for maybe 5 years (I like what I like and I don't like waste!). Keep your blush!
    Was not expecting to write a whole novel but anyway, well done!

    Also, I love these videos so much it's justifying my reasons to stop my 2022 behavior of buying everything and hyped up on social media. And 1/2 of my eyeshadow collection are the Jeffree Star palettes, got them on sale and during black Friday!
    I do have a lot of makeup but nothing near these "beauty guru" and "influencer" amounts! 2 large train cases, one medium and one small 🦐 and also a blue fuzzy "weekender " bag from dolls kill holds my eyeshadow palettes- gotta get crafty with storage in my apartment 😅plus I can see it all laid out right in front of me, nothing is hiding and all gets used in rotation!

  • @erynnm3045
    @erynnm3045 Před měsícem

    Watching this video a year after you posted it, but I completely agree with everything you said. I remember getting into makeup at the time massive makeup collections were a thing. I wanted that as well, and now I'm dealing with the aftereffects of so much overconsumption in 2024. On the plus side, with the rising cost of makeup (and everything in general) I won't need to buy anything new for a few years. lol. If things go bad, I'll bin them, but if they're still good and working as well as they were when I bought them, then I'll just keep them and use them.
    My interest in makeup has waned significantly in the last 12 months, and right now I'm finding myself enjoying a set of products that vary slightly depending on the look I'm going for, while I have 2 whole drawers of products waiting in the wings for their turn in the spotlight. Mostly the look I'm doing currently is a neutral brown eyeshadow in the crease, with a cream champagne, pink, or bronze shimmer on the lid, black eyeliner, ash brown in my eyebrows, mascara, and a light layer of concealer under the eyes and covering spots, a light layer of foundation, and lightly layered bronzer, blush and highlighter just to smooth things out. Lip balm or gloss on the lips to tie it all together. Powder to set. Nowhere near as heavy as makeup used to be. I'm so glad full-coverage foundations aren't trending currently, though it does make it tempting to buy something new.
    Nail polish, which I have a 240 of, I'm slowly working my way through. I haven't had to buy a new nail polish in close to 4 years, and I won't for quite a few years yet. I've decluttered a few to friends and family when they're after something new, which makes me feel good too.
    Project Panning has completely changed the way I shop and use makeup. It's taken a long time, but I'm much more utilitarian with the makeup I'm buying these days. I rarely get FOMO and when I do I have enough eyeshadow singles that I can pretty much dupe out anything I want.

    In what ways do you think brands can overcome this death in consumerism? Ive noticed some brands are adopting a fast-fashion trend in their product releases. Like flower knows is constantly releasing makeup collections in less than 3 months apart from each other. It seems to be working for them but there success might be due to the fact that they are providing new cosmetics that are beautifully packaged.

    • @Lyds1
      @Lyds1  Před rokem +4

      I think generally (although it sounds lame) releasing a few, really good quality products in a year is probably the best way to build hype right now - people are more conscious of their spending so they want to get something incredible that they’ll use over and over rather than constantly buying new releases. I also think focusing on base products is a good idea rn because I feel like eyeshadow is the thing people are most tired of following the mass release of eyeshadow palettes between around 2015-2019

    I feel like I'm more reasonable when buying skincare, because those can be used up more readily and i can wait to buy and try something after I've used up the product. And i feel like it's because a lot of skin care products are from big brands that have existed for years and will probably continue to exist for years to come, I don't feel this rush to get it like i do with makeup that solds out or is a limited collection or what not. And I certainly have a collectors mindset, not necessarily with having every item from the brand, but more so collecting every single colour, or try out every brand that seems worthy of testing. The only way I justify buying so many eyeshadow palettes is using them every day and make sure i dip into different colours each time 😂
