    I stopped buying eyeshadow palettes when I finally realized I only have two eyes and I only wear full glam makeup two or three times a week. Also stopped buying blushes. The only I can’t seem to stop is lipsticks.

For instance I had one sitting in my collection never touched it till this weekend and I was shocked that I hated it. That started to make me think what else do I have that I haven't used and possibly don't like. This whole decluttering started because I bought one very expensive eyeshadow palette and I love it because the blending was effortless (plus I invested in Sonia G eye brush set, she's right once you get the good stuff you turn your nose in the others) and I figured I had a very good palette let's get rid of others. My thinking is if I have two eyeshadow palettes that blend easy why do I need 20palettes

Several of my friends and I were talking about this not too long ago and we all agree we’d do anything to get back all the money we’ve spent on all the makeup we wasted money on. It’s not until you become older and hopefully more mature you realize most of this stuff isn’t necessary. 20 years ago, people weren't buying big palettes because companies weren't making them. Typically you had palettes that had like 4 shades. Maybe 6 shades. And they were definitely usually shimmers, like the UD palettes. This is because the way the average person puts on make-up has changed. Now we have people telling us about crease shades, transition shades, inner corner highlights. Before? People would just swipe one shimmer across their lids and were done lol
    Just like with contouring, people have gotten more savvy, which means companies have released better products. UD's Naked palette changed the game, and people don't give it enough credit. People saw that they could create a ton of looks with just one product. After ABH started releasing their $50 palettes, the palette crazy began.

I think social media had a lot to do with the uptick in these palettes.

    Skin care is another area where we are getting overwhelmed with products. How many cleansers do you need? How many toners, serums and moisturizers! I think people don't do the research to see what ingredients are necessary for your specific skin type - and how many people don't know that basic information. That's where everything starts. Do we really need to be using $80 serums or $100 moisturizer?

    • @makeupdeva6166
      @makeupdeva6166 Před 5 lety +15

      I agree with you to a certain degree. I have put myself on a no buy skincare until I use up what I have. I do have so much skincare that some is about to expire before I get to use it. But unless it smells old, I will still use it. The part about you saying people don’t do research on the ingredients for their specific skin type: 1) People might not be accurate on their skin type. Example: they might be using a product that dries out their skin making them think their skin is dry not realizing it’s the product. Then they switch to a high moisturizing product that is also more than they need making their skin oily. I have very complicated skin on my face and have struggled finding a product or set that works. My skin is dry from not drinking enough water. It takes a lot of water to finally start hydrating your skin as it’s the last thing your body hydrates. Because my skin is dry it produces oil to moisturize it. Skin cannot produce more water, but it can produce more oil. I have acne along with it. I get dry patches usually where my acne is, and oil all over, not just in my T-Zone. I have tried products for oily skin, dry skin, combination skin and acne prone. Trying the same set consistently to try to see a difference, one day I’d be oily and the next I’d be dry. Some sets I’ve tried in the summer and wonder if it would work better in a different season or the opposite. So far, what I have found that works the best is a combination of sets. If I use an acne wash then I have to use non acne treatments after, like a hydrating serum, oil, moisturizer, then eye cream. If I use a cream wash then I’ll use an acne toner or oil free moisturizer. Or sometimes just an acne wash then an oil. The type of products and the amount I use also depends on the season. I need extra layers of moisture in the winter. The 2nd dilemma: the acne products aren’t anti-aging. The anti-aging might be to heavy and cause acne, but still help all the fine lines. What about one set brightens, or exfoliates, or detoxifies, or whatever else. There’s not really one set that does it all. Therefore if you have a multitude of concerns/skin issues then you need a product to combat each issue. For me, it’s trial and error. I buy my skincare when it’s on sale like the Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty or 21 Days of Skincare or Sephora’s VIB Sale. But when I bought them to use for a 6 month supply until the next sale and did that for 2-3 years, I didn’t realize until last year how long it actually takes to use up one set. I don’t think I’ve bought any more skincare since the Spring or Fall of 2018.

      I have to disagree with the $80 serums and $100 moisturizers... why??? Because I used every skin care brand that walmart and walgrens have, and they do no good on me. Some of them burned my face, other dry it out even more than it was already. I even tried Proactive... thats absolute garbage, and a scam and it also burned my skin. What worker for me?? Tatcha products, sold at Sephora. Their moisturizers are $68, their cleansing oils are $48, one of their masks is $110, etc. The kit I bought of minis is $60 and it has 4 things... cleansing oil, rice powder, moisturizer and dewy skin mist. I can now apply makeup without my foundation breaking because of how dry my skin was. I can finally do that. And thats thanks to Tatcha $60 set of minis... $68 moisturizer, $48 cleansing oil, etc. Those products are clean, and cruelty free. Non of the products walmart and walgreens sell are clean, without unnecessary chemicals in them. At walgreens there is only 1 brand cruelty free and their makeup remover towels burned my face. Sometimes you really need to INVEST, and I mean invest in good skin care, not just a lot of crap with unnecessary chemicals in them, like for example Clean and Clear, Neutrogena, etc. And really buy good clean skin care, that obviously will cost a little more. And dudes.... I am broke as fuck... snd I mean broke as fuck... I just invest on skin care and hair care instead of buying a lot of makeup, clothes or shoes. Right now I dont even need to put on foundation, so a lot of the times I skip it, along with the powder and concealer 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ good and clean skin care will do that. And a lot of times good and clean skin care comes with an $80 price tag.

      Reactie S I always throw my liquid products away in that time frame because they do tend to go bad but I always use my best judgement for my powder products depending on how they perform, or depending on how they look. I feel like I can always use my powder products for much longer than what’s recommended. I think it’s a waste of money to throw a product that looks/smells/ performs the exact way 3 years later that it did the day I bought it. It just doesn’t make sense to me to get rid of a perfectly good product, especially an expensive one, if there is nothing wrong with it.

    • @Mel-pb5xw
      @Mel-pb5xw Před 5 lety +15

      Alyssa Foels exactly! If it still looks, smells & performs the same there is ZERO reason to get rid of powder products. Creams & liquids, especially those used near the eye such as mascara, are a bit of a different story, but I don’t know anyone - including many MUAs - who recommend getting rid of powder products solely b/c a specific time frame has passed.

      Of course, i work in product marketing and if something sells well, there is pressure from company leadership to keep selling it. Positioning a priduct as "Limited edition" serves 2 purposes: 1) it creates a sense of urgency and encourages more sales in a shorter timeframe, and 2) it reduces risk to the business in terms of investing in trying new products in the marketplace to see what sticks.

    2 Things: 1) Everything old being new again, I remember in the early 90’s when single shadows were revolutionary to address the same issues (disproportionate use of shade) of palettes. I was actually surprised when palettes made such a huge comeback. 2) For all the availability of highlighter very few people know how to use it. Highlighting your whole face is as beneficial as highlighting the whole page of a textbook. Rather than drawing attention to your most flattering features, it’s one distracting mess.

However after the JH issue and expired makeup being focused on I had to realize the stuff sitting here is probably expired because I have so much! It's already been WASTED and holding on to it isn't going to change that. I'm glad to see this video because I need to do your suggestion of unfollowing makeup pages and influencers because that's why I felt I "needed" all this 🤬 to say I'm part of the group that has that too. You are dishing out excellent advice. I am guilty of possessing too many cosmetics....thanks to CZcams influence and my love for cosmetics. I am proud to say I have not bought any new makeup in a year. The commercialism and consumerism of the cosmetic industry is out of control. Marketing will LIE to you...it is pure BS that powders "expire". They WANT you to keep buying....
    It is easy for youtubers to say they are on a "no buy" when they receive full collections in PR. A channel with 77k subscribers gets a crap ton of freebies. I would bet you have an Alex 9 (or 2) plus several smaller storage for brushes, lippies, and perfumes....all for a collection out of control. I get it, though, cosmetics and CZcams is your job.

    I related to this video in a major way--it's the first time I've encountered you here on YT and I can tell I will enjoy following you. I agree with every category you mentioned. I sold Mary Kay for five years and when you're in that cult, you never use any other brand. When I quit last year, I went bananas building a non-MK makeup collection. By the end of the year I had twenty (thirty?) odd palettes, tons of brushes, samples from subscription boxes, soooo many new primers, etc. etc. This year I've been choosier and I've found I enjoy using what I have and picking up new products sparingly. It's made me more excited when I DO get new stuff. Following CZcamsrs like Samantha Ravndahl and Kelly Gooch has helped too--Sam buys lots of stuff but no longer gets PR, so her content is more unique than many people's (and the things she recommends are really truly great), and Kelly shops her stash and keeps her purchases under control. It's inspired me to do the same.

    You had me nodding my head right away! I literally am just discovering highlighter so I am way late to the game! I bought the amrezy hype and I find it disappointing so selling it. I am loving the anastasia highlighters from the sundipped palette and I have 3 thats it. I don't want to own anymore till I finish up the ones I have! Same with eyeshadow palettes I have bought one lately thats it. I have makeup fatigue lately to be honest. I have been project panning and trying to really condense and curate my collection. I still buy some things but trying to be conscious about my spending on makeup. Preach this needs to be more popular and its become okay to spend so much on makeup and for me I am like nah there are better ways to spend that money. One thing I think people own too much of is blush and lipstick as well. Its so hard to use both of those things up!

    One thing I will suggest to stop buying is every time a brand comes out with a new foundation: you don’t need to go out and buy it. You can go out to the store and test it out if it’s the same as you other one and or if it’s not good for you’re skin type don’t buy it.
    NYX and Morphe came out with there foundation and like everyone bought it. The dry skin people ended up returning it do to it looked bad and that equals out to the return products got trashed and ended up in land fields.
    So that was a wasted of time, makeup, costed a lot of money for the brand and bad for the environment.

    Model in a Bottle is setting spray that came out years and years ago before settling sprays were popular, it’s only function is to to keep your makeup in place for hours (24+ hours and it still looks fresh, but I don’t recommend wearing your makeup that long). I did have to transfer it to a different bottle to get a finer mist, but it’s really good, especially for special events. I do have the Queen of Hungary mist, and I just use it to cool myself down (it’s extremely hot and humid most of the year where I live). I also have all of the Wayne Goss brushes including the holiday editions and I also have all of Linda Hallberg’s brushes (for when I need to use a synthetic brush), those are the only brush sets I use and need. I have enough makeup to last a lifetime so I have really cut back on any new purchases (although the new Pat MCGRATH Mothership VI is calling my name)!
