Good stuff! My Dad served with 4REI in Algeria & was part of the cadre that reformed 5REI in Indochina in 2 Battalion I believe. He was in action during the bad months of 1950.
That young man journey is typical of the legion, bye now he may have left but he will never forget the 5 years he came for in the LEGION, what he learned will serve him for the rest of his life
In the mid 90's my life was falling apart due to drugs and mental issues.........I had served in the US Army as a young man............I had thought about joining the FFL, but this was before I had ever been on the internet and due to lack of information I never made a go at it....I turned my life around and joined the USAF Reserves in 2000 and retired in 2017 with a 20 year reserve pension....I am very blessed, but still think and wonder what it would have been like to go in the FFL.....
That is not true any more. It was long ago. FFL is a part of Frech army and taken care of as such. FFL has still a special mark in French army. I know. my brother went through it. I cannot say where he served, but he is alive and well being.
After our West Belfast tour, we went back to Germany, then had 3 weeks leave. When all the guys in our company was getting on the plane at Hannover airport to fly back to the UK. One of them was getting on a train for France. He spent 5yrs in the 2nd Rep, then handed himself into the UK authorities. Did 60 days in Colchester MCTC, then came back to us in South Armagh.
There are two types of helmets: the "old" ones used in training (they wear it while firing) and the recent ones, made in Kevlar, more efficient against bullets, are worn in operation, like in Ivory Coast or Kosovo.
Legio Patria Nostra In English The Legion is our Fatherland) is the Latin motto of the Foreign Legion.[57] The adoption of the Foreign Legion as a new "fatherland" does not imply the repudiation by the legionnaire of his original nationality. The Foreign Legion is required to obtain the agreement of any legionnaire before he is placed in any situation where he might have to serve against his country of birth. That is why Officers are all french too...After first contract on the Legion (5 years) it gives you french nationality !
Yay a New Zealander! I am a logistics quatermaster in the NZ Army,at Trentham and I have always wanted to join the Legion. Some mystique or mystery to it.And,a French Passport at the end!
The French foreign legion is the deadliest, toughest, bravest, most highly trained and efficient infantry unit in the world, and I'm not taking they're side, I'm not even French and it's not just my opinion, It is a fact. They're even better than the US Rangers, that pisses me off
nope they are not the best in the world, they are just one of the most famous units.. the best ones are the ones u never heard about. you are just terribly informed but thats ok
If the FFL is so great why did France fold and fall so fast in 1940? These are just mercereneries and they never give their heart and soul like a native fighter.
Matt Barbarich ok i see that stupid are born everywhere. I am belgium but say that French forces are bad or again coward are false. If you stop watching video in favour to read book, it may be more easy. Firstly French government were diriged by socialist who choose a defensive strategy (ligne maginot). Hitler said after the campaign of France lots of things. In 1943 he says that French soldiers are woolf commanded by dogs. Reference to our strategy error to help my country, Belgium. This war is not famous but very impressive. In two mouth France did what USA did during all his war: 1587 Germans tanks are eagles and 38% of Germany’s air craft are destroyed. France are saved the battle of England. That’s why Himler said this famous sentence « English fought until the last French ». But please read the book « battle of France » and you will see a new image of discret battle but very important
The legionaire who they are tslking to in the green... those eyes.... he looks bored and ready to kill.... its like his brain is asking him... "why are we not killing enemys right now ?" Lol
and my opion about the Kiwi, Modest, calm and a GOOD sportiff..a good Repman..where lot of wouldbes can dream about having the physics..think at youre weigt ! lol Respect Jeune Camarade Kiwi! i salute you,an old Cpl de la 2Cie (Belge)
i love how every Military youtube video becomes a pissing contest, "mine is better then yours!!" 95% of the people commenting here wouldn't be above 16 years in age i am guessing either...
Hey Prianorm, do you call the fight for Bir-Hakeim a major battle? 3 thousands or so Legionnaires stand against one of the best of the best of that time : 8e régiment bersaglieri division Ariete, division Trieste,90e AF KORPS division, some battalions of Pavia division, 15e Panzerdivision, 150 Stukas. The FFL never surrendered the position. After that, Rommel lost in El Alamein against Brits.
These guys are crazy. And why do they all look soo angry?? I have a question. Do they weed out the best soldiers for a specific job during training or does everyone have to be good at each. Eg say your not good at swimming but your an ace marksman.
@TFGRUNT00 January is too early for me mate,I was thinking I need at least a while longer. and it's really only a thought. But good luck to you....hope you make it through.I would have loved to enlist with you. So he was Hauraki aye?I'm Logistics - 1 Logistics Company, RNZALR I want to leave because of a need for something new, some action. But I could certainly see what I can do. I heard that old Trembath held up and Artillery exercise by walking down the Range?!?!!
@imraff No he's a professional Journalist in New Zealand, one of the best domestic crime-based reporters for 60 Minutes.Maybe he's just made a rare error.
my personal opinion is if u go there only for money your gay , but if you love this to do it's great to put one hand on your heart and say i am proud to be part of this elite group!
I'm quite tired of every series mentioning that 35 000 has died in service, and from that calculates the risk of dieing in the legion. They have to understand that the majority of theese mentioned casualities were caused in conflicts such as Algeria and Vietnam. Wars like that are not thought anymore, therefore, they cannot calculate that ''1 of 12 die''. Just my point of view.
Wessex43 said, "don't be fooled by the romantics..legion is more mop and broom than combat." You mean, like most armies of the modern world, right?! Not everything is training or combat Most armies find plenty of mundane things for a soldier to do... Don't tell us that the British Paras are all action, and no "mop and broom," because then I would have to tell you, not so sir. Unless, of course, you are in a elite or above type of unit. However to get there, you do your "mop and broom" time too
@TFGRUNT00 Hey Man yea I know him.Tried out for the South African Army Too.He's been travelling a lot I hear.Is he in the Top 50 Fit club? Yea I can't believe he came back after all those YEARS!....and with a Sword of some kind as well from the Legion.Turns out more Kiwi's in the Legion than I thought. What unit are/were you in? I was a Chef, before leaving the Reg. Force and signing up with the Territorials(New Army Reserve).
And Prianorm, a company of 65 FFL (A good number of french nationals included) who stopped 2000 Mexican soldiers (with cavalry) for a day long, until submerged by the number. Do you call this a major battle? Gosh, get yourself a good history book...
when i read comments negatiff about it..im sure the most NEVER served an Army..big mouths about the marines or other but never served them..marines respect Legionair and vica versa (and we them) the "non respect commentors" just a bunch of would be militairy, go play youre playstation and post commenst when expiriance..(sorry for the bad Englisch)
Yes, there are lots of reasons for being slightly nervous in front of cameras. I didn't say there weren't. Yes Rivola is a human being. I didn't say he wasn't. Yes he must perform excellently in combat. I didn't say he wouldn't. Yes he's part of the elite FFL. I noticed that in the TITLE, alright. You have no business saying I'm full of shit. To me, Rivola still has sad eyes, a kinda hesitant delivery, and a guilty puppy expression. End of. Stop overreacting. It's getting you nowhere.
Bir Hakeim : General Rommel would recount: "A surrender proposal, had been rejected, and the attack against the fortifications, the positions and the minefields set by the French troops was launched around 12 pm, from the north-west by the Trieste Motorized Division, and from the south-east by the 90th Light Infantry Division.During that time, I had to command myself, at several times, the assaulting troops. On the Western Desert Campaign, I had not seen a more relentless fight.
well they fought for the germans in world war 2 and got hammered by the british in syria...they havent got the best reputation when you look at the facts
The journalist is clearly anti FFL. Is there non expendable soldiers anywhere in the world? And I would like to see that fighting force that is open to debate orders given. They HAVE to learn French. OMG should they speak KIWI English in FFL instead? :) Or may be Russian or any of the other 130 languages :) Lets better vote it out and see how everyone feels about it. French passport could be given, but not after 5 years. Depends on how good of a soldier you were.
Good stuff! My Dad served with 4REI in Algeria & was part of the cadre that reformed 5REI in Indochina in 2 Battalion I believe. He was in action during the bad months of 1950.

This interview makes it sound like the Legion is cannon fodder. The Legion is Frances idea of a world army fighting for NATO, the EU, and France.

If they own country don't care about them joined F F L it's the way to go All the best I will always respect French Foreign Legion

No phone for 5 years no car for 5 years no woman for 5 years. if it wasnt for the german songs I would join
j j Don't think they require no women for 5 years. Maybe can't marry. But they don't require you to be a monk or a prisoner.
nope
If you’ve changed your name then you wouldn’t show your face! If you do change your name? You have the chance to get it back after 18 months
in the legion no officers only soldiers
Jose Gonzalez yes they have officers, who are mainly French and the top graduates of the Officer Academy at St Cyr.

im sorry but what kind of journalist is this guy he can't even get the motto right !
is this actually he's job or is he doing this as a tourist?!?
They were defeated by the Vietnamese!
So were the usa
Not the ideal place for people who feel they were born to be soldiers, though
Why is the singing so awful in the Legion?
Troll detected
It is not
He is right they are not paid to surrender, they are paid to follow orders. Being they are in the French Army, the main order is "Surrender".
Sure we surrender to your girlfriend every time you're out, you moron.
Poor man. A bird has more brains than you.
