I had always wanted to learn the violin and never had the courage to start ("You have to start as a child - it's far too late now! ... It's so difficult - I wouldn't even bother ...") . A few months ago, I saw a really decent violin in a shop window and suddenly decided that I'm being silly. Ever since then, everything seems to be falling into place: I have found your brilliant channel and bought all your books. I'm now on lesson 10 and starting on the first song book. Two of my friends have over 5 decades of violin experience and they enjoy accompanying me when I work my way through your exercises. I already play a few other instruments at a mediocre level but the violin is my favourite. I'm currently going through some challenges healthwise and it seems that the vibrations from the strings balance me when I'm anxious. It's one of the best chapters I have ever started, thank you for the initial nudge, your brilliant support and contagious joy, Alison. ❤

Easy question to answer. When I was in first grade the school took us to see the symphony. They demonstrated each instrument I instantly fell in love with the sound. I agree that it’s the most beautiful sounding instrument that can evoke a wide range of emotions. We couldn’t afford lessons so I couldn’t pursue it until I was old enough to join our school band. Sadly they did not have a string section, so I went with the sax which I followed through into college. Now that I’m older I want to follow through with it. I may never get as good as I did on the sax, but I want to try. I bought a violin which should be here Monday so I’m getting super excited 🤗

I’m happy that this covered knowing why we want to play the violin and having motivation to keep going. Also, the frustration we may experience😮. At least we now have a “heads up”😅.

For me the why is a bit of a story. I loved the violin/fiddle since I was young, how it went from classical to bluegrass at the whim of player. So as soon as I was in high school, I ran for the signup list to learn violin. Unfortunately I was informed that the school gave first preference to students who lived in town, and if there were any violins left after them, then MAYBE we could have a chance. I tried again in sophomore year, same result. In my Junior year I was told that it was to late to be taught and shown the door. Well after graduation came life, time in the military, marriage kids, all that. Now I'm 65, and I still stop when I hear a violin, so dammit, I'm going to fulfill an ache I've had my whole life.

    Hello Alison,
Thanks for talking about this. I have been working on your Online Piano course since October, and I finally started Book 2 earlier this week. After watching so many videos on your channel, I also have wanted to learn violin too. I plan to purchase a Fiddlerman violin as my Christmas present, and I am so excited to learn both of these beautiful instruments. It makes a world of a difference when you can eventually play the pieces you want yourself rather than looking for the piece to listen to online. Thank you for all that you do!

I always loved the sound of violins and always imagined how cool it would be to actually play it. There is one specific piece I would love to play someday, its a really hard one (from a beginners perspective at least) but I reaaaaally want to play it. I only started about 2 weeks ago but I am excited to actually play simple songs I like as soon as I am good enough :)

I HEARD zino francisgatti: and ohstrach etc while i had an enormous chrush on this girl. I built a sound studio in my garage: nothing fancy just a hole in the wall I could practice drums and guitar in. I would dance around to Francisgatti and I was hooked. I went to hear Stephay Chace at Britt gardens and enjoyed it so much.

That's a good question. I think people are just drawn to an instrument. A lot of us just like the 4 strings tuned to fifths and so go for the violin/mandolin combo.

I’ve just bought a violin and very interested in the course. I played for a while but never learnt to read music properly. I didn’t play for 20 years but when it arrived yesterday I was stunned when I could just pick it up and play a few things. Does your course teach music reading? I realise it isn’t easy but wondered if maybe I just can’t learn that part. Thanks. P.S. I bought a second hand Stentor Conservatoire Violin based on your video about them and I’m so happy with it. Much nicer than anything I played in my youth I think (I never owned one).

I only started to learn because someone bought one for me for a birthday gift, so I didn't want to let them down.

One advantage with an Amazon violin is that you won't have to sign up for a gym contract. Imagine the strength you'll develop holding a 50 pound violin.

Could you give some examples of decent violins for beginners? Maybe links to where to buy?

Try Musicians Friend: but go there in person. Actually touch the violin: look for those cracks everywhere. Look down the neck see if it is straight or crooked. Look to see if fingerboard is straight and centered on the top plate. Look for gaps in the back panels or is it one piece? Is there anything rattling round inside? Is Soundpost behind bridge? Or is there no soundpost? Many things to consider. It's like buying a car. The more you know the better. One word of advice: don't drink coffee before you go shopping for a violin. You'll overlook something. That's what happened when U bought my second violin. I don't recomend drinking coffee youl only overlook something. It is best to have the patience of a cat pursuing a mouse!
