At age 55 I started to study the violin with no other musical experience. I was in the midst of a midlife crisis. A difficult divorce, struggles with an addiction, job issues you get the picture. The violin was a God send filling a hole in my soul. It was/is so difficult and improvement so incremental that any perceivable improvement was incredibly affirming. Now 11 years later I could not imagine life without my violin and playing it everyday. I have come to understand I will never be able to play the way I want to (The Czardas by Monti ). But I can play to the best of my abilities with great satisfaction. I have just recently been able to do some vibrato obtaining that incredible sweet sound.

Thank you for sharing such an inspiring journey Gabor! I'm sorry to hear about the troubling times you've had but I am glad that your violin journey has blossomed beautifully for you. To play to the best of your abilities with great satisfaction is a success that even many long term violinist have not yet achieved, so that is something really to be proud of! I wish you the best on your ongoing violin journey and thank you for letting me be a part of your wonderful violin journey. ❤️

Thank you Julia. Sometimes I don't know why I am still trying to learn the violin. I started when I was around 10 years old, I was invited to join a community orchestra and then quit when I was asked to be a soloist. I am so shy. I didn't play for many years and then would on and off alone or with small groups. In the end I would always quit the group. Something just keeps pulling me back. I love the sound and I am stunned but thrilled when I get a phrase right. I am 60 years old and have been invited to join a local fiddle group. I love the people but my fear seriously impacts my playing. So much so I am thinking of quitting again. I am in awe of musicians who just pull out their instruments and play.

I love classical music and my favorite musicians like Jascha Heifetz, Arthur Grumiaux, Nathan Milstein, Itzhak Perlman, Janine Jansen and others are all violinists. And the sound they can get from their instruments is incredible. This is the main reason for me. I also agree with the reasons you talked about. 🙂

I've discovered several new things after taking up the violin. E.g. to really listen to every note. Which is quite obvious actually since there are no frets. Also discovered that it always takes a while to 'tune in' the ear at the beginning of every practice session. Today, I started a new challenge i.e. to play the traditional English ballad: 'Early One Morning' in the key of E. I expected that to be a challenge since only A and E can be found on open strings for reference pitches. It was quite awful for a while, but it's getting better. My approach to learning has also changed. Memorize the song quickly, do away with the sheet music, and only play from memory is new to me. That works especially well for violin. How to make it a long-lasting relationship, that's a different matter. Don't know yet how that will play out. Maybe one way is to have a good quality instrument (made by a real Luthier, rather than by a robot machine) that one can love, might be one way. Playing in some kind of group would also be a way. But is not without it's own problems, e.g. the conflicts in the choice of music to play.

My grandfather was music, the violin was his favorite instrument among many others that he played wonderfully. I always admired him and wanted to play like him, but it is until now, at my 59 years, that I have the opportunity to start with the study of the violin. Soon I will have my first concert in an intermediate chamberta, where I share pleasant moments with young people. It also motivates me to play with my 5-year-old granddaughter, she started her learning a year ago and we love playing together. In this same concert we will play a theme together, as a duet.

Merci beaucoup, Julia. Very wise advice ! I've noticed daily violin practise has improved my left hand piano technique (which was always weak) My regime is to practise violin for at least 3hrs during the day and as much time on my piano at night. Periodically I'll go through a couple of days in a row of acute frustration on violin.. really horrible, ie. my intonation will be off (despite having a chromatic tuner in eye sight) ... and sometimes feel I'm getting no-where with sluring on string crossing exercises. Then, I realize I'm RUSHING myself ha ha ! So, I take a deep breath and relax...this always helps. I also have to remind myself to have realistic expectations of my progress. I hope to get better at that reality. All that aside..............I LOVE MY VIOLIN !!!! :-)

I know this is an ancient cliche.. but worth a reminder to any violinist (like myself) in their early stages of learning the instrument, "It's about the journey............ not the destination." I often remind myself of that motto.. it can be ever so soothing when struggling with technique, intonation and the rest. No pain...........No gain ! ;-)

Really good points! I agree!! But I have a question. Why are so many people thinking that violin is soooooo difficult? Or maybe the hardest instrument?
I think every instrument is difficult of his own way. What about piano, guitar, clarinet or double bass? Or the organ?
And to your question: I came to violin, through my best friend, a classical musician.

    • @kschanaman
      @kschanaman Před 5 lety +4

From my beginners experience, the hardest part for me has been: No frets, valves or keys. Getting notes absolutely correct every time the fingertip drops, without being slightly flat or sharp, has been my difficulty.
Another is doing the same at higher positions. Notes are even closer together higher up.
I am an experienced musician, as I played trumpet and tuba in band all through my school years. Even picked up keyboarding.
A trumpet and tuba have valves. A keyboard has keys like a piano. The fingers can feel those things in a tactile way.
Not so with violin, cello, etc.
So yes, violin is indeed a tougher instrument to get really good at. Moreso than other instruments.
I started just three years ago. I am 50 now. So another problem is that fingers don't learn new habits as well as if one started violin younger. Which is why it's best to start at a younger age.
There are just a couple of good reasons people say it's harder than other instruments.

As a 1 year begginer in both violin and cello, what can I say is on violin u have to be more precise,as someone else said, the notes are closer, the cello being more forgivening on this. Yep I call it the Nintendo syndrome, people seem to think there is a reset button, and everything needs to happen now. It is very frustrating when you own a hobby shop and people just want everything to happen now.

Oh gosh, I hope you decide to learn despite being antisocial! You may really enjoy it. Good luck with whatever you decide!🥰
