Partial Transcript: "On Tap -- Rochefort 10
Hi. I'm James Knott and today we are exploring -- in a blind taste test - a highly-acclaimed, classic beer from Belgium -- Trappistes Rochefort 10 from the Abbey of Notre Dame de Saint Remy in Rochefort Belgium.
This is one of seven trappist breweries in the world and the proceeds are used to support the monks at the Abbey and their charities. The Rochefort brewery makes 3 different beers Rochefort 6, 8 and 10. They all use the same recipe, but vary in strength. The number is a reference to the gravity of the beer in the old Belgian system of degree.
Rochefort 10 is the strongest of these beers and comes in at 11.3 percent ABV. It is a quadruple and currently stands at #17 on beeradvocate's list of Top Beers in the World. Not too shabby for a beer that was created well before America's craft beer boom.
It is brewed with Pilsner and Munich malts, German Hallertaus and Styrian Goldings hops, dark cane sugar, two strains of yeast and water from a well on the Abbey grounds.
Rochefort 10 is great for cellaring and is best consumed out of a goblet or chalice at 54-58 degrees."
BETTER BEER AUTHORITY!! BETTER BEER... Gets stuck in my head haha. Love the show!!
And i thought you guys would do a huge long video and go out with a bang haha. I loved the show as i always do, but i want a redo haha! Good luck james.
This has to be the best beer I've ever had. Disappointed they don't really appreciate it.
Bout time you guys did this!!
Scott, Thanks for sticking with your taste buds.
Please do more video's!!
Miss you and your pointing, Mr. Knott!
Last episode makes me cry.
Yeeee
I think what makes this beer a classic, which doesn't come across from this review is because it can be aged for many years. It mellows out and a the carbonation will reduce too. Great review guys!
You are right. We have two more reviews.
Don't cry yet. Two more episodes.
RIP
Hey Zac, I run the Facebook page for the BBA, my brother and I are going to continue to run the page and see if we can figure something out to keep it going. Stay tuned! I was once in Sydney, Lord Nelson's Brewery Hotel was the best beer I had there..
Finish on a high. Though, sad to hear it's the last review. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
Sorry to say that but you didn't pour it well, first you've to lean the glass and with the bottle make some circle all around the glass then let the depot that you've to drink after
Hmm, personally I don't like trappist beer, but Rochefort is okay. I'd like to recommend the selection of the Hertog Jan Brewery in Holland. The pilsener is my personal favorite. It's a bit more expensive but well worth your money. I don't think its globally available so if you want to try it you'd have to import a case. But I say again, it's worth it.
R.I.P. blind panel taste tests. I really hope someone takes the Baton from bba, easily the most interesting beer content on the interwebs. Thanks bba, if not for you guys I would have never ventured beyond belgian craft beers. Say hi if you're ever in Western Australia
Two more reviews to post. We taped three on our final night.
the guy to right had no beer in end
I personally prefer the St. Bernardus act 12 because it has more character.
The Westvleteren is the best beer of the world. Only avalable at the monestary/aby ... not available at a store (or for very high price at ebay)
Greetings from Belgium
this isn't the last episode. we filmed a couple that day. stay tuned.
haven't had it i admit. not a big fan of belgium beers. but if i can find it at my bottle shop i will certainly pick one up and try it.
Normally I drink coffee and tea but this beer can taste wonderful on a evening in a dark bar. I can imagine the effect is much less when you drink it by day after dinner and so perhaps here with the evaluation something was not right.
That's what I was thinking.
Nice review guys...Cheers!
I don't know where they get the sour notes from.
Dude gave perhaps the greatest beer on the planet a 6.
Thanks for doing another episode! I've had the Rochefort 6 and really enjoyed it can't wait to try the 8 and 10 I have in my cellar. I Appreciate all your time and information. I've opened up to other beers just from watching you guys.. Wish I would have found you guys sooner. Thanks!
Great review James! Will miss your reviews! Good luck on your future endeavors!!!
Carbonated? omg ... Roch 10 is probably one of the best beer in the world :)
Two more reviews to go.
Awesome! Loved seeing Johnny on there! Very cool. Looking forward to seeing what you guys end with James...it's been a good run! Cheers!
On the bright side, I feel much better and am healthier now that I drink less beer and have lost weight.
Scott is a weenie, but it has always been about personal preference. For me, this was an easy 8, maybe a 9 depending on my mood, but that's because I enjoy the style and this is a very good example.
rumor has it that it will be a blind taste test of seagrams ginger ale.
Fun review. I tried it for the first time this past winter, not really knowing much about it and was completely floored. One of top beers now for sure. So rich and flavorful.... love it!
I liked it. Not my favorite, but definitely worth trying. I have 6 more bottles in the basement, so it will be interesting to see how it changes over time.
Two more reviews. I will do more videos, but most of them will not be beer related. :(
Attention car la Trappiste 10° est une des plus fortes bière de Belgique ! A boire avec modération.
These guys wouldn't know a good beer if it punched them in the face
This panel must be a bunch of double IPA enthusiasts or something. This video is disrespectful to this godly brew.
your so right, all u see now is these wimpy 4% ipa wanabe hipster beers. i tried them all its so lacking in body flavour and finish.
Amocoru you are spot on! I have always been a scotch man but at the pressing of a good friend of mine and his phenomenal brewing I have become a Belgian fan. I am biased I must say because I find all the others lacking. I will sit and drink Schlitz before I would ever waste my time on an IPA
they fucked up that pour and used the wrong glass
Two more episodes. Don't play taps quite yet.
i love honest tastes tests.. thanks for making this.. I'm having one right now and my opinion is clearly bias.. I love trappist ales lol
This beer tastes way better after it's been sitting a few years and the carbonation settles out a bit. One of my favorites.
Nm just saw craftys comment. (I have to read more comments)
Well if you want my opinion, i think all 3 of the judges where idiots. This is an amazing beer Trappist beer. There's a reason why BA has it as top 5 for the best Belgium beer in the world.
they were unfit to be beer judges they fucked up that pour and used the wrong glass there are certain things you have to do to draw out the best of a beer
???
I prefer the 8. It goes down smoother.
You konw, i'm from Belgium and i just wanna say that you look like bored to drink that beer 0_o
First of all you don't have the right glass
Second, you didn't pour it well there's a special way to do so shaking the bottle when pouring it to have depot on the glass
Third, you should drink the depot separately
Fourth, you should really find people who know about belgian beer :)
those guys are "wanna be'sss" some show .. hahahaha 5500 viewers in a year .. hahahahahah
+Carine Beer You might find this hard to believe but it's hard to find the "official glass" for every Belgian beer in America. Maybe they should just stop shipping it if it's that difficult to enjoy.
This was the worst of the BBA's panel selections. Nobody cares about these people (especially Scott).
so sad to know that my favorite beer reviewers will come to an end...james u should keep going...
as a belgian i prefer the 8
and dont shake it !!!!!
Evidently you didn't serve it properly.
Was this the final video? Is there still gonna be the exit interviews? I need my BBA fix!
You don't like any trappist beer? There are many different flavors.
damn buddy you lost alot of weight! good review man
btw i'm from Belgium ;)
+Rafael Beer Raf bonjours de France :p
There are two more episodes. I've been pretty busy but I hope to have them out soon.
It's hard to explain, I tried some products from Rochefort, Engelszell and La Trappe. They didn't quite hit the spot if you get what I mean. But Rochefort 6 was the one I liked most.
Btw, Scott should try over 500 belgian beer before judging them ;)
Richard! You're giving away our secrets!
Fire the guy in the plaid, lol. This is the ultimate beer and blind I'm pretty sure I could identify it. If you want a treat, take a sip, spoon some Hagen Das vanilla ice cream in to your mouth and then take another sip. Magical.
BOOM!
Gotta try this one, love the over bubbly, musty fruit beers.
Really great to see Johnny G on the show. That man knows his beer...and he's got a RIGHTEOUS beard.
that Scott guy is totally clueless
I am retiring from Better Beer Authority. I hope you will continue to subscribe to see what videos I come up with in the future.
It's pretty dissrespectfull. Im pretty sure some off them lied drinking that rochefort way before the blind taste test. claiming that their given score was accurate so they do not make a fool out off themself in the show! Ridiculous. I am from sweden , but it was obvious this blind review is flawed!
We are definitely insane... crazy for beer.
This isn't your last episode. Just letting you know.......PLEASE!?
Revisiting some old BBA videos. I have to say, the regular "blind" tastings were awesome. It's impossible not to let hype get in the way when reviewing beers, so blind is the way to go if it can be arranged. These were just average guys giving honest opinions, and I sorely miss it!
Thanks!
Oh man it was so cool finally seeing this one! I had a great time with all of you guys and the beer was awesome too. Thanks so much James! It was a ton of fun.
By the way, everyone who keeps saying this is the last episode.....it's not. There are a few more coming!!! Trust me. ;)
Hmmm, I've had this beer probably 7-8 times and I never noticed it to be sour.
For me this is a really sour beer. Great review cheers!
8!??? Clearly a 10!
some of these characters get a microphone, but are clueless and total ignorant when it comes to appreciating 'real' beer. Have some respect 'dude', you really talk like you have no idea about beer brewing history, tradition, quality. Go buy a Bud
Sour? you guys are insane...haha..
Aren't you suppose to have engravings in the glass to release the carbonation? If the glass doesn't have those engravings, the beer will taste over-carbonated. I wouldn't classify this as an easy to drink beer, but I don't think it means to be. This is a beer that is meant to be enjoyed slowly. It is a dessert, sipping beer. When I had this, I took my time finishing it and enjoyed every single sip. Also, I like mine with the yeast poured separately. I'd give this beer an absolute 10. I have to say I disagree with the judges, especially with Scott. I know there are some styles of beer we like more than others, but every time I have a beer, I try to open myself up to its style.
I think that is one thing we can agree on. Scott is a weenie. Right Scott?
It was great having you. You were a good fit for the show. Thanks for driving down.
Somebody here made a real fool of himself lol
WTF a beer youtuber what ever the hell that is and has never tried one of the easiest to find top 10 beers in the world!!!!!!!!!!
yeah you fucked up on this episode
I miss pointing at you.
This was taped on our final night, but there are still two more reviews to post. I think you will agree that the last one is a good one to go out on.
I know you are just giving me a hard time, but I actually tried to recruit women at one point and they turned me down. Any time I advertised with the local homebrew club for panelists a bunch of middle age white guys would show up. I do have a half-Japanese wife though, so I am totally down with diversity. :)
"Massive protest"? I'll believe it when I see it. :)
An odd beer? Hehehehehehrhrhrhrrhrhhrhrhrewhat
It's a good thing you guys quit doing this show because your shoe leather palates are more suitable to scrubbing the latrines at renaissance festivals than reviewing masterpieces like Rochefort 10.
7.3? Beeradvocate rates this beer as a solid, untouchable 100 out of almost 7,000 reviews, and the bros themselves give it a 98. Who the fuck are you animals to call this beer average?
Best of luck in your next career. I hope it has nothing to do with judging flavor profiles of any kind.
You're a ridiculous person.
You're a ridiculous comment.
Because it's not. I just came across these shows today for the first time. These people have a bias towards their beers they like and still don't know what they are doing. Not much substance going on, on this show. They associate liking or not liking to being good or bad. They are way off base.
The whole westvleteren being superior to Rochefort and other more available trappist or abbey beers is garbage. The best quads in the world only differ in dryness, carbonation and certain esther profiles, not overall quality. A Westy 12 isnt leaps and bounds above this. And the 6 out of 10 blind rating? If you rate this beer a 6 out of 10, you need to stick with pale lagers, you wont know the difference anyway.
+jordanaug81 I agree completely. Westy is fantastic but I've yet to tatse a beer that takes me to my happy place the way Rochefort 10 does. This is hands down the best beer in the world for me.
Amocoru It's definitely one of the best for me too.
James, please stop this silly nonsense and continue to review beers with the BBA. There is going to be a massive protest, and you will all ultimately be coaxed out of retirement anyway.

"Excuse all the butchered pronunciations". No. Stopped watching. Check the pronunciations if you expect to be taken seriously. Pathetic.
Two more reviews to go.
