The line you were thinking of was "I'd buy you John Merrick's remains." John Merrick was famously known as "The Elephant Man" (hence the follow up line, "All them crazy elephant bones,") because he had severe deformities due to a rare disease that caused large growths all over his skeleton. The line in the song about buying his remains is a reference to when Michael Jackson tried to buy John Merrick's skeleton. They lyric is pointing out the crazy things people with money buy for no other reason than because they can.
Yeah it's full of references to the 80s that maybe Brad and Lex are too young to get. A K-car was a type of cheap mass produced car in the 1980s. One style by Plymouth was called a "Reliant" (our family owned one). In another line they talk about buying Art and mention Picasso. But they also mention a Garfunkel. Art Garfunkel is half of the band "Simon and Garfunkel". It's just a silly play on the word "art". I don't think this song aged very well because the references are outdated.
It is fun when you go to a BNL concert and everyone throws macaroni on the "kraft dinner" part though.
The song is all tongue in cheek. The main thing is he would buy a girls love. The rest is just absurd things or completely made up things he could buy. Fur coat but not real (cruelty to animals). A green dress but not real ( cruelty to eyes). No such thing as Dijon ketchup. He would buy her art ( Picasso painting or Art Garfunkel from Simon and Garfunkel). They are really great musicians if you look past the silly lyrics.
@@gritter2112 I never understood the green dress thing. Is green that ugly?
@@greatsayain âwell yeah!â
Cool Thing about that is Iâm related to that guy
Kraft dinner is what they call mac & cheese up in Canada. They'd still buy it, they'd just buy more...probably my favorite part of the song...cuz is probably what I'd do.
Is putting ketchup on your mac and cheese a Canadian thing? Cuz it's also quite popular here in Florida. We call it redneck spaghetti.
Canadians love the blue box, and we do in fact put ketchup on it sometimes.
@@kenwelch198 I do ! It's yummy !!
Do they think Dijon ketchup is real?
â@@greatsayain At the time Heinz was making all kinds of 'new' Ketchup. You could get a purple version, a hot tobasco version, I think they even did a dual squeeze version with ketchup and mustard. Dijon ketchup was not a thing, but years later they did make it, and their marketing hook was "It won't cost you a million dollars".
They sing and wrote the opening for the tv show Big Bang Theory. There was a lot of controversy over their name when they played small clubs in Ontario. I saw them back before anyone really knew who they were. They use to play a lot of universities back 30 years ago. My buddy actually hired them to play a concert for his employees when he sold his company. They gave him a great deal because they were preparing for an upcoming tour and wanted to work the bugs. They are a great bunch of guys.
So the story is the original band name was "Free Beer" because that's what would be on the marquee of clubs they played at. Evidently there was pushback at some point because people would come in looking for actual free beer, thus the change to "Barenaked Ladies"... which sort of serves the same bait-and-switch purpose.
Lol
One of the best and most successful acts in the world, primarily from 1998 to the early 2000s. Sold 15 million albums (pre streaming) too.
I remember my friend's family absolutely loved eating "Kraft dinners" (i.e. Mac & Cheese specifically made by Kraft). I was telling his Mom about this song, and I started reciting the line, "We wouldn't have to eat Kraft dinner..." and her face got soo dark, but then I quickly continued with, "But we would still eat Kraft dinner. Of course we would, we'd just eat more" and her face lit up and she laughed.
The 90s ⊠very diverse musically. Another band that was all alone in their lane.
I really like Barenaked Ladies. They have a *bunch* of really good songs. "The Old Apartment", "Brian Wilson", "The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel", "Maybe Katie", and a bunch more. The first concert of theirs I went to was for the "Maroon" tour and it still ranks up in the top concerts I've ever been to... they improvise the lyrics a bunch... at the concert I was at, they made up a song about someone in the crowd they saw on the spot. They also had a lot of crowd participation (everyone singing along as well as they do stuff with the crowd).
Is this song also considered as one of their 'good songs?' Serious question.
@@burnaccount0019 it is to me :) But not all their songs are lighthearted like this one. The four I listed above are all more serious. "Pinch Me", "If I had a Million Dollars", "One Week", and others are more 'fun' songs.
They suck
@@burnaccount0019 its their first successful song, which hit toronto first and spread from there.
They got their notoriety from busking, and then busking on speakers corner.....u can look up what that is.
This is essentially a demo song. As well as in live with a McDonald's girl.
@@burnaccount0019 This was a cutesy song, a favorite of many (but not me) and they've always had a comedic element to to their songs, BUT they are all terrific musicians and singers and many of their songs are REALLY good and don't judge them by this song because they bring so much more to the table!!
So cool you are wearing a red maple leaf on your t-shirt Lex! The Barenaked Ladies are one of the quirkiest (and awesome) bands to come out of Canada. The voices of the two lead singers are so unique and they blend so well together. One of their biggest hits was "One Week" although "Brian Wilson" and... oh never mind, there are too many. But you also have to watch their videos as that really shows their personalities. Fun fact: They are the ones who wrote and sang the theme song for The Big Bang Therapy.
The reference to " those old elephant bones" is the true story about John Merrick who had severe deformities and was called the " Elephant Man" . It was rumoured that Michael Jackson either bought or tried to buy this poor man's bones. Gordon was the Barenaked Ladies 1st studio album which is awesome. Hope you react to more of their music. đ
Kraft Dinner (called Kraft Macaroni And Cheese in the US and Cheesy Pasta internationally) is so popular here in Canada that Canadians eat 20-25% of all boxes produced each year. It has been called one of Canada's de facto national dishes and many family's have their own way of preparing it.
Canât blame them there. Love me some Kraft Mac and cheese.
Kraft Dinner used to be so good, especially with a couple boiled hot dogs cut up in it. I had some the other day and it didnât taste the same as it did when I was a kid. Maybe my taste buds have matured âŠ.
ya i was pretty much raised on KD and i like the white cheese version (not orange) more
@@FryngeMinority Dinks and cheese!
@@FryngeMinority I was raised on hot dogs or canned tuna in my Kraft Dinner
Love Barenaked Ladies! Saw them before they were famous--what a great show they put on!
The wife and I are going to our 19th and 20th BNL concerts this summer, first one was in 99. When the crowd leaves a BNL concert they are always smiling and happy. We like that. Weâve grown old liking that experience.
They are one of the best live shows you will ever see! My brother in Portland Maine won a contest back in the 90's on a radio station and these guys played in his living room. Was cool and they are really down to earth guys.
Totally true. Excellent entertainers, funny, amazing voices, the entire package.
near..far, only at concerts
One of my favorite songs! Iâve sung this in the car with all of my daughters. Brian Wilson is another of their songs that I would have to recommend.
Brian Wilson is probably my favorite but they have so many others like, Old Apartment and Pinch Me
Truth! Such an amazing song.
They don't know who Brian Wilson is though :(
You two are too funny.
Put this on your Playlist under I need a smile!
John is known as the elephant man.
Green dress, a joke
Buy some art...Picasso or Garfunkel (art Garfunkel of Simon and Garfunkel) another joke.
BNL is a quirky band. They have some really good tunes though.
Possibly my favorite Live Voices I've ever seen. Such Strong and Masculine Singing Voices.
Bare Naked Ladies Rock.đŒđŒđŒ
Love your tee-shirt with our Canadian maple leaf!
Agreed! Bonjour/Hi from Montreal, Quebec, Canada!
I saw them perform this live in a LITTLE TINY room for a radio station, (river 92.5 Boston) and it was hilarious, a lot of the comedy lines in this were different and so so so so funny
This is a much, much deeper rabbit hole than you might think. On this album alone the mood shifts from silly to heartfelt ("Brian Wilson," "What a Good Boy") to deadly serious ("Blame It On Me," "The Flag" - note, though, that one's about domestic violence) and then back again. My sister brought it home when I was six and the rest was history; I used to get French dressing and call it Dijon ketchup (which, yes, is just a mustard joke).
Perfect summary!
Great, great debut album.
The Flag is one of my favorite tracks although I like the whole album. It's interesting that this (1M Dollars) was the single that made it to the radio when there are other cuts on the Gordon album that showcase their talent more.
One of the best songs, "Box Set", is a retrospective on their greatest hits. The joke, of course, is that it appears on their *first* album.
John Merrick was a man with a disease that made his skin look like elephant skin. He was known as the 'Elephant Man'. There was a movie made about him, called 'The Elephant Man'. It is a truly sad life story.
And the rumour was Michael Jackson bought his bones.
Well, skin and a HUGE head. Elephantiasis enlarges body parts. Some people just have a leg affected, but John was REALLY affected. A very good movie, btw. MJ offered half a million, and then a million dollars for the skeleton kept at the London Hospital Medical College (I think?), but they rejected his offer.
It didnât make his skin look like elephant skin, itâs elephantiasis which is I believe tumors all over, or may affect one side and not the other, and made his head swell with tumors and caused other issues. Check out the movie âElephant Manâ and also âMaskâ which Cher stars in.
@@horizonblack Thank you for the correction (and the warning). After just seeing a reaction to "Rasputin" by Boney M, someone mentioned they had his wang preserved in a jar and that it was huge. Of course I immediately looked it up. Wow. Just wow. So, maybe while I'm still freaked out...?
@@horizonblack Well, I looked it up. And I cried. But that's a good thing. I'm glad I looked it up. Thanks for the sobering moment.
They did the theme song for Big Bang Theory too!
"We may not really understand": While it is popular with a lot of Americans, it definitely isn't typical American humour, and it is loaded with Canadian cultural references (and an Australian one). So I am not surprised if there isn't a 100% mental translation to American "ha-ha". There is an element to Canadian humour where... its like an understated American "wink wink, nudge nudge" type joke, but without the winking and nudging. If that makes sense. Its like how the silence between the notes of a song makes the song.
I didn't have any trouble understanding all the references. You shouldn't paint Americans with such a wide brush. You mistake American humor with Hollywood humor and America isn't a monolith.
The old apartment should be next please, these guy's are great, super talented and alot of fun in concert...âĄ
Ditto
Love these guys, they are hilarious and surprisingly talented.
Try "The old Apartment" Its upbeat and about going back to visit there first home. My favorite song...
@@kayleighsavanna Oh yeah that's another banger!
Some of the references are Canadian, but the sense of humour is also playful and silly.
In the early 80's, Plymouth made a car called a Reliant. It's nickname was the K-Car. Kraft dinner is Canada's name for Krafts Mac and Cheese. They used a play on words for dijon ketchup because dijon mustard is considered fancy. Fancy things usually cost more. With a million $ you can buy fancy things. I'm thinking the cruel green dress is avocado colored. That would be cruel.
You forgot to explain the Art Joke - Picasso was a famous painter and Garfunkel was from the musical group Simon and Garfunkel
@@nickdanger4568 That line cracks me up every time đ
@@nickdanger4568 Look up Garfunkel Art, not exactly a joke.
It wasn't that it was nicknamed the K-Car. K was platform. Reliant was just part of it. Dodge Aries, Plymouth Reliant, Dodge Omni, Chrysler LeBaron.
@@noseeyou The group was Paul Simon and ART Grafunkel - that's the joke
One of the best bands ever! I wish you would have gotten to see them live....every show was hysterical. I probably saw them 5 or 6 times. They would come up with songs on the spot about whatever was happening that day. They played a free show on Pier 17 in NYC and one of those double decker tour buses was driving by and one of the singers yells "Hey! Welcome to New York! F#*K you!" LOL. During this song, when they sing the line "we wouldn't have to eat Kraft dinners" the crowd would toss open boxes of Kraft macaroni and cheese onto the stage so they basically got pelted with uncooked macaroni everywhere they played. At one show, somebody threw a green dress onto the stage when they sang that line. ("but not a real green dress, that's cruel" was a joke basically to go along with the fur coat line) Most of their songs were pretty silly and they made for a great time at shows.
I saw them at a festival in the 90s. Always wished they were underrated and wished they were bigger in the states.
In the live version of this song they changed the last line to "rich and creamy", as any good mac & cheese should be
Great song my favourite line is haven't you always wanted a monkey. Mainly because even if I'm not really paying attention to the song my subconscious starts screaming like a toddler that yes I want a monkey.
The song is sung from the point view of a 14 year old imagining what he would do with a crazy amount of money.
A catchy, quirky little ditty, but if you want to experience Steven Page's vocal dynamics check out "the Old Apartent" or a live version of "Good Boy". Prepare to be blown away!!đđ»âđŒđŻ
This band was big up here in Canada. They had such feel good music and lots of humor. They didn't take themselves too seriously. Just good fun.
John Merrick was called "The Elephant Man." He had a horrible disease that deformed his flesh and bones. There is a book and a movie about him, both called "The Elephant Man." If you ever feel like crying, you should check it out. One of the saddest true stories you will ever hear.
Please do more of the Ladies. Enid is one of my favourites but there are so many more. Theyâre in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and at the awards ceremony they were inducted by Geddy Lee (Rush).
Damn, this song will 30 years old this year.
Funny story... my grandmother HATED when I worked for them (the name)...but she LOVED their music when I played it to her without her knowing who they were! Names mean nothing! Those guys are honest, genuine, great people. Worked with them, AND variously hung out with them.
When this song was released pre-wrapped individual cocktail sausages were a thing, but pre-wrapped (pre-cooked) ready-to-eat bacon was NOT a thing. But nowadays it is a thing. So maybe they should get credit? Maybe they change this in their live shows - they often play around with the spoken parts at live shows, varying from what they recorded for the album and going off into tangents or new strange/silly ideas.
Give them credit??......for advancing food technology further into the territory of TANG, LUNCHABLES, and FRUIT BY THE FOOT???
Bare Naked Ladies should be CURSED!!!.....CURSED!!!!....I SAY!!!!.....for placing the idea of pre-cooked, wrapped bacon in some geeky food technologist's head.
Those floppy, doughy, overly salted anathemas to all that is porcine holy, warrant all who suggested and/or developed them to be covered in honey and set on a fire ant hill.
I LOVE the Barenaked Ladie. So clever and funny. Great choice and reaction.
Lol. Love these guys. So talented and hilarious. This group does the theme song to the classic comedy "The Big Bang Theory." That track is called "The Big Bang" lol.
They are always so outside the loop! That's what is so funny about their first time listing reviews. It's so funny watching the reaction of two people who are so clueless.
Its one of those songs that just swings and makes you smile .
One of the best lines of the song goes over 98% of the listeners heads.
Well I'd buy you a K-Car - A nice reliant automobile.đ€Ł
not a reliable Chrysler product.
@@carson5196 That's the point, a K car named Reliant was a total P.O.S.!
I know. I used to drive one. Total piece of shit that somehow kept running for 238,000 miles. But nothing inside worked right! And the moron dealership salesman gave me $1200 bucks towards a van without checking it out first!!!! (1995). Biggest win ever from a stealership.
love it. the song "Enid" is brilliant as well
This song always makes me feel happy!
One of the greatest Canadian rock bands of all time. Remarkable songwriting, great albums, fantastic live peformances, pleasantly simple music videos, etc. Plenty I could recommend but I'm gonna throw some love to "Jane", it's in my top five BNL songs and is too rarely mentioned as a top recommended track.
My kids and I would sing this when it came on. Great memories with the kids!!!!
Check out âWhat a good boyâ - The live version on the âAll their greatest hitsâ album. đ
That song is so fun. They are an interesting band.
You might wanna check out their song "One Week". It is cool and energetic and...different.
A classic from that same BNL period is âWhen I Fall.â Simply beautiful.
STRAIGHT REAL SONG LOL...Cute lil carebear song lol...dijon ketchup was sarcastic Brad lol
Barenaked Ladies are one of the original geek bands. They were unabashedly geeky, using pop culture refrences as well as obscure trivia in their lyrics. In fact, the height of their geek cred is that they wrote and sing the theme song for the sitcom 'The Big Bang Theory'...
When they recorded this the first vocalist on the track was Ed Robertson and the second vocalist was Steven Page, who has since left the band.
The reference of elephant bones was Joseph Merrick (although popularly misnamed John Merrick) who was known as The Elephant Man during the Victorian era of England. He had a rare bone disease that horribly disfigured him and caused him to become a side show attraction. The David Lynch film 'The Elephant Man' starred John Hurt as John Merrick (which is why everyone thinks the name is John and not Joseph) and Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Frederick Treaves, who helped John escape the life of the side shows and become a person that London society saw, for a while, as a human being of merit. Wonderful film, sometimes hard to watch. Very emotional.
The green dress being cruel was a joke, referencing back to the fur coat...which many people now believe are horrible things to have due to the cruelty inflicted on the animals whose fur is made into the coats.
The reference to art was artist Pablo Picasso (the painter of great fame known for the style of painting called Cubism) and Art Garfunkel of the folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel.
The Kraft Dinner is (i believe) Kraft Mac & Cheese which some people eat with ketchup...and dijon ketchup is a complete joke because there is dijon mustard (which comes from the town of Dijon in the Burgundy region of France)...but there's no such thing as Dijon ketchup. It references a series of funny commercials from the 1980s when Grey Poupon mustard came out, a more mainstream branding for Dijon mustard...ironically Grey Poupon is made by Kraft Foods.
My favourite Barenaked Ladies song is âBrian Wilson.â Amazing. Great vocals
I think the next songs you should do from Barenaked Ladies are "Old Apartment" and "Pinch Me"
This is quintessential 90s hubris. I'm so glad you guys get to experience this stuff. Keep up the great work!
This is the reason why I love this song: itâs cute, so incredibly silly and wholesome all in one.
Awesome song. And had good music when I was growing up. Great reaction love the channel keep up the great work
Seen them 3 times between 95 and 98. Such fun. Fox theater in early 95: âEveryone throws Mac n cheese, but only Detroit throws monkeysâ
For some of their serious stuff (which is really good): "The Old Apartment", "Brian Wilson", and "Jane" are really good.
That song was 100% creative pure fun!!! đđđđ
This is such a great group and they are funny and talented!!! You guys trying to make sense of it and it isn't supposed to lol
I love the clips with you to swaying and grooving along. You know we swaying too guysđ
I love these guys and especially The Old Apartment!â€ïž This was first concert I took my daughter to. Was not expecting to be pelted by Mac and cheese!đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Back when music gave me dreams and aspirations in life lol. Glad too see you enjoyed this gem :)
These guys always make me smile.... Peace!
They also did the theme for Big Bang Theory.
So many Canadian references in this song haha love it
Itâs been a while since I heard this song⊠but it sounds like an unplugged version or something.
Morphine - Cure for Pain. Morphine - Buena. Morphine - Head With Wings. Morphine!
Please do their Lover's in a Dangerous Time
They wrote this song when they were beginning teenagers...Made a great hit in Canada, Awesome Canadians and that northern humor
It should be noted the Barenaked Ladies did the theme song for the Big Bang Theory
They did "Be My Yoko Ono" in Speakers Corner (it was a Much Music thing) back before they made it Canada big. It's pretty good
Reliant K or "K car" was a popular, inexpensive sedan.. . They had it in a station wagon as well.. A lot of kids first cars or something grandma or grandpa might drive hahah
Hadn't heard this,I love it....a Garfunkel lololololsnort!
BNL got pegged as a novelty act because of the name and songs like this, but they have a lot of great songs that are more serious, though their oddball sense of humor keeps blessing through. Am I the Only One is my favorite followed by When I Fall.
BNL got pegged đ€Ł...only everytime I close my eyes
Song reminds me of a bunch of middle aged dads at a BBQ and they broke out the acoustic guitar and began singing & riffing on the fly đ
1. John Merrick was known as the Elephant Man. There was a rumor at the time that Michael Jackson had bought his bones (which are in a museum), so it seems like an eccentric rich man thing to buy. 2. Dijon mustard is considered fancy, so upscale ketchup. 3. Green dresses are generally considered ugly. I always just though of it as a cute, quirky love song about what you would give someone if you could.
The Barenaked Ladies were known for their playful lyrics. This song is incredible in concert because it draws the entire audience in. In fact, fans would toss Kraft Mac & Cheese onto the stage when they sing about "eating more." Love this band and Lex's Canadian outfit.
Every time I hear this song I want to play poker. They played this during the early 2000s (?) when televised poker was popular.
All I can think of is the NY Lotto when I hear this! It was the theme for it when I lived there.
The very same band that did the theme song for Big Bang Theory. They had quite a few hits, but nobody seems to remember that. Grrr! đŒ
This is what 90s-2000s alternative was ALL about. Random lyrics, catchy beats. No real particular similarities between all popular bands in the genre
âDinosaur bones?â
I mean this with love: as a Canadian who grew up with this song.. when you said that, I laughed so hardđ€Łđ€Ł
Highly recommend "Old Apartment" from Barenaked Ladies, its my favourite of theirs and one of their more. . . Serious songs
Oh the nostalgia. That takes me back. Imagine, you could buy a whole house!!!!

I saw them in concert...they opened up for alanis morissette and the write a song for the city they are playing in. They are really funny in concert...great opening band...and alanis in concert was absolutely amazing
Been to dozen BNL concerts. The best.
My freshman year at Saint Mary's university in Halifax they played as the the headliner act. It was a great concert!
My favorite BNL song is âOne Week.â Thatâd be a good one to react to. Very upbeat and fun!
They've come to Portland the last two years and I attended both concerts...great shows.
John Merrick the elephant man, there's a film about him
This is the song that made them a million dollars.
The original lineup of the Barenaked Ladies was one of the most fun bands to see in concert. Great music and genuinely funny guys. They are best known for their "cutesy" stuff like this one, but also had some really deep stuff as well. BTW, "kraft dinner" is Canadian for mac and cheese and the reference to dijon ketchup was a joke based on commercials about dijon mustard. The bones was a reference to "Elephant Man" of stage and screen and supposedly Michael Jackson trying to buy the bones.
Feels like Canada! Lyrics can be changed up live. đšđŠ
There are some pretty quirky bands out there and Bare Naked Ladies is high on that list. You might want to check out They Might Be Giants as well. Their songs are highly entertaining, but don't spend too much time trying figure out the lyrics...just go with the flow. Two suggestions for songs by them: "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "The Statue Got Me High".
