Brian Wilson was the genius behind The Beach Boys. He’s arguably one of the most gifted writers of all time. He had a mental breakdown for a period of his life and there were stories of a disoriented Brian in the throws of his illness randomly coming downstairs n the miss of the night and playing the most beautiful music on piano his wife had ever heard and then going back to bed. Listen to Rick Rubin (producer of acts like Jay Z) talk about his respect for him.

He’s talking about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Brian had mental illness issues and at one point was bedridden. Known as a brilliant songwriter, many elevated him to status equal to the Beatles songwriting genius. Michael Jackson had issues as well and that’s a point well taken.

Brian Wilson was the leader of the Beach Boys. There was a point in his career that he kinda had some issues and shut down. He was a perfectionist with the music he wrote. I don't think BNLs are making fun. I think they are saying they got a taste of what he went through when they went through a period of "creative drought".

The song is about Brian Wilson who was the singer/songwriter of the Beach Boys. Wilson suffered from a mental breakdown in the mid 60s and suffered throughout the 70s and 80s with depression, drug abuse, and overeating resulting in him being 340 pounds in 1982. But he also actually really loves this song and has covered it live!

    • @endless013
      @endless013 Pƙed rokem

It's not "about" him, it's about being "Like" him. It's ultimately about a mental state, he's feeling depressed and there are voids in his life so he's going to do what his Idol do and lay in bed and play music. The music triggers the "pavlovas response" of wanting more so he's off to the late night record store after hiding away all day to get more music hoping it will fill the void.

Brian Wilson’s daughters, Wendy and Carnie, made up 2/3 of the group Wilson Phillips. The other 1/3, Chynna Phillips, is the daughter of Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, so they were all children of some of the most popular artists from the 60s. Brian Wilson was an incredibly talented musician and songwriter.

OMG you guys have reacted to 5 or 6 Beach Boy songs and don’t know who Brian Wilson is ? Brian Wilson was the main writer and producer of the band. He along with brothers Dennis and Carl, formed The Beach Boys in 1961 with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Brian had life long struggles with mental illness in the past accumulating in a nervous breakdown in 1964 resigned from regular touring concentrating on writing and creating music for the group. In the late 60’s he became a recluse and turned to drugs. Slowly he came back after a long struggle and has been touring as a solo artist since 1999. On top of that he also lost both his brothers. The Beach Boys as a group and Brian Wilson as a musician, songwriter and producer are still considered one of the the best and most influential.

The drooling reference was to Ivan Pavlov, a behavioral psychologist/experimental neurologist. He's best known for his classical conditioning experiments with dogs: by ringing a bell while feeding the dogs, he conditioned them to expect food when they heard a bell, causing them to salivate. In the song, they aren't saying that either they or Brian Wilson are in bed, drooling. Just that they're being triggered in some way.

Steven Page the singer performed this song for us at a work function during the pandemic. As I recall he said he wrote it when he was around 19 (I not be remembering that part correctly). Steven said he was bipolar and this song is about some of the very depressed episodes that he had experienced. Yes, he is references Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys who suffered from severe depression as well. He also is referencing Brian Wilson with the lyric about listening Smiley Smile.....one of the Beach Boys albums from 1967. Not a comedic song at all.....actually it is a very serious song about mental illness.

Pavlov's dog experiments played a critical role in the discovery of one of the most important concepts in psychology: Classical conditioning.
While it happened quite by accident, Pavlov's famous experiments had a major impact on our understanding of how learning takes place as well as the development of the school of behavioral psychology. Classical conditioning is sometimes called Pavlovian conditioning.
To summarize: classical conditioning - learning to associate an unconditioned stimulus (food) that already brings about a particular response (salivating) with a new conditioned stimulus (Bell ringing), so that the new stimulus brings about the same response. Meaning, when the Bell rang sounded, the dog would salivate, even without the food being present.

They had a song about Yoko Ono on the same album who I'm sure you know her. Also "The old Apartment" which was their first hit in the US. Or what "What a Good Boy" which is my personal favorite and very deep. Also their most famous song even though was never a single "If I had $1,000,000" which people will probably be singing along with 100 years from now.

The song speaks to those dark times in many of our lives when we just don't feel like there's any reason to get out of bed. It's about when our life's purpose is lost on us, everything seems meaningless, and all our actions seem only to be instinctual responses to Pavlovian inputs. If and when we do feel like that we need to know to seek help because rediscovery and finding enthusiasm again are entirely possible. Don't give up.

Most of the comments touched on this, but yes... this song is hard to understand ina vaccuum. Steven Page (lead singer/songwriter of BNL) had written this song when he was 19, before BNL had even formed. It's a song about depression and mental illness, which Brian Wilson, had infamously suffured from. After his stint with the Beach Boys, he had retreated from the industry. Many stories passed around about what he was up to... many saying Brian Wilson had layed in bed for 3 straight years. Other urban myths claiming Wilson would offer to write songs for other artists in exhange for cheeseburgers, and having a giant sandbox built in his living room, hence the line "If you wanna find me, I'll be out in the sandbox".
BNL typically had a vein of humour throughout a lot of their songs, and this is one of the deeper/heavier pieces. Personally one of my favorite songs of all time.

"Brian Wilson is the lead singer of The Beach Boys. He went into seclusion after experiencing drug problems and a nervous breakdown, and for about three years, he spent most of his time in bed.
The song is both a tribute to Wilson and a look at his life. A few of the references:
"Dr. Landy" - Wilson's psychologist, who was a constant presence in his life for much of the '70s and '80s.
"Smiley Smile" - A 1967 Beach Boys album that was released as a truncated version of their highly anticipated album Smile.
"I'll be out in the sandbox" - Around the time he was working on the Smile album, he had a sandbox constructed in his dining room and his grand piano placed in the middle. He thought the beach atmosphere would enhance his creativity.
Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies wrote this song and sang lead. He admired Wilson as a songwriter and visionary, and cites the Beach Boys as an inspiration. When Page left the group in 2009, performing this song without him proved challenging. They went with a simplified arrangement with Ed Robertson on lead vocals.
This song helped break Barenaked Ladies in America. It appeared on their first album, Gordon, in 1992 and reached #18 in their native Canada. Over the next few years, they built a small following across the border, and finally made an impact on the American charts in 1997 when "The Old Apartment" hit #88.
By this time, "Brian Wilson" was a concert favorite, with the crowd joining in on certain lines ("record shop!"). In 1997, a live version from their Rock Spectacle album was released as a single in the US and reached #68 in February 1998. Hearing the adoring crowd on the song clued in American listeners to Barenaked Ladies live appeal, and when their album Stunt was released in July, they were primed for Stateside success. The group made a huge push to promote the album in America, playing lots of radio station showcase concerts and expanding their following one city at a time. They brought a catchy new single along for the ride: "One Week," which went to #1 in October (where it stayed for, yep, one week).
The song opens and closes with the same verse, which is about an impulsive late-night visit to a record shop. Brian Wilson embarked on far more unusual adventures, but by writing about a more practical outing, Steven Page shows how Wilson's eccentricities can lead to inspiration. Some may see it as crazy, but it's part of his genius.
Brian Wilson likes this song. He performed it on his 2000 Pet Sounds tour, usually as the opener.
Wilson commented on a Reddit Q&A: "I was honored that they would use my name but it embarrassed me a little bit because I was lying in bed a lot haha."
Wilson's version can be heard on his album Live At The Roxy Theatre.
According to Steven Page, Brian Wilson came by the studio when Barenaked Ladies were recording their 2000 album Maroon, and he played them his version of this song. Page says, "We totally freaked out.""

Others below have said who Brian Wilson is, but no one mentioned the amazing genetics and talent he passed on to his offspring (7 children). Notable are Carnie & Wendy who went on to be 2/3 of the group 'Wilson Phillips' (Check out 'Hold On' by Wilson Phillis). 😁

There’s a movie called Love and Mercy about Brian Wilson. It’s terrible to see what happened to him. He struggled with mental health issues and from the movie, it looked like there was a doctor that was ended up manipulating Brian and exploiting him for his money for years.

The Beach Boys genius Brian Wilson had a mental breakdown during the mid-70s and legend has it that he pretty much stayed in bed for months and months on end and ballooned to 300lbs ,only occasionally venturing downstairs to raid the fridge and play his piano. Dr Landy is mentioned in the lyrics. He was the so-called doctor who took over his life in an effort to get Brian back on track. He almost certainly saved his life but ultimately took over completely and it took the Beach Boys and Brian's family years to gain access to him through a court case to get Landy out of his life (watch the 2014 film 'Love and Mercy' starring John Cusack - an excellent Brian biopic).....Back in the early 2000s the most emotionally affecting concert I have ever been to was seeing Brian and his brilliant backing band play one of a series of historic concerts in London during which the whole of the classic 'Pet Sounds' album was performed decades after his last appearance in England. He began the concert by performing a cover of this song which segued into 'Til I Die' - a magic opening to a long set of Beach Boys classics and 'Pet Sounds'......Listen here: czcams.com/video/bjeWqXyVLu4/video.html By the way, another even more impressive Brian Wilson tribute song is 'Dear Brian' by Chris Rainbow, a bitter sweet song which preceded his rejuvenation and happiness from remarrying and adding to his family by adoption.czcams.com/video/nFlIrsoYxQk/video.html

Plenty of my fellow commentors have discussed Brian Wilson, now onto Pavlov's drooling dogs. Ivan Pavlov won the 1904 Noble prize in medicine. He is the father of behavioral therapy. In his famous experiment, before he fed his dogs, he would ring a bell. The dogs upon receiving their meals would drool. After conditioning the dogs, Pavlov could get the dogs to drool by just ringing the bell. The dogs now associated the bell with food.

Barenaked Ladies are great. I just saw them this fall in Atlantic City. Fun show. They are clever. If you don't know the story of Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), you are probably not going to get the meaning of this song. Try the song "One Week". It's a better intro to the band.

You guys need some cultural references..."Pavlov's Dog" is an expression based on an experiment. It is about associating something someone desires with a trigger mechanism.

I see other explained about Brian Wilson. Pavlov trained dogs to drool on command by feeding them after ringing a bell. it was like 1905 and proved "involuntary" actions responded to repeated stimulus. I have spent 40 odd years assuming the story of the drooling dogs was common knowledge. Guys, sue your middle school. :)

Brian Wilson suffered what today would be called severe depression, back then if you were poor you were nuts and if you were rich eccentric. Depression makes it hard to get out of bed and face life...if like Brian Wilson you don't have to get up you won't.

Brian WIlson had a manager who tried to control him and caused most of his mental health issues leading to him being bed ridden for a long while. The meta thing is that on a recent tour he did an acapella version of this song, so he was singing a song about himself written by someone else

My wife and I have spent 23 years growing up with BNL. We both love their music, but BNL is more than music. These guys are real down to earth and all quick witted. If you see them in a live show you would understand. Every show is different, trust me, I’ve seen them 21 times, including on a cruise where they invited thousands of their closest friends. The wife and I thought we were over the top bnl fans
.. not even close. Their music grows on you in a very different way. The lyrics are not explicit, but they convey a truly deep message to the listener the more you listen. Call And Answer is one of my favorites. The verses talk about how “I” have taken the relationship seriously and “you” have been very flippant and frivolous. The bridge comes in completely blowing that theory to bits when the “I” asks the “you” to come back with the caution
.. “ but I’m warning you, don’t ever do, those crazy messed up things that you do, cause you ever do, I promise you, I’ll be the first to crucify you, now it’s time to prove that you’ve come back here to rebuild
..rebuild
..rebuild
And the listener gets the picture crystal clear.

These guys were local legends on the college scene and alt rock radio back in early 90's Toronto area. So many hits until lead singer ego took off and he got into cocaine and moved to NY etc.. The band played on with the co-lead singer/guitarist Ed pretty well but the magic was gone preety much. Too bad, they were really unique and fun at the start

Not a comedic song it’s about Brian Wilson the genius behind The Beach Boys. He suffered a tremendous mental anguish, breakdown , depression, anxiety, gained a huge amount of weight

he more or less just gave up on life. Thank goodness with much help and therapy, he was able to recover.
