    Do they make a similar switch for 220 volts if you wanted to control 2 or 3 breakers (a few lights and other essential items to keep the house livable) on each side of the panel? That is providing you have a large enough generator to run the extra items on the extra circuits.

    Great video. Really thorough and understandable instruction. You have demystified electrical for me. Now I am going to put a solar generator on the circuit that runs my furnace and AC.

    How many volts are your enclosures rated for?

  • @RicksDIY

    Yes, I'll be doing another video for installing for a pump and lighting soon. I love the sticker too, Not sure how much it helps but I know that if all things being equal I will always try to support an American made product and I even go out my way to buy the Made in USA shoes and boots...pay 2-3 times as much but I know I'm getting quality and supporting American workers

    What do I need to hook up a Harbor Freight portable gen. 8750/7000? I bought the HF 30 amp 50 ft. 240v cable.... I guess I need a 240v transfer switch hook into dryer hookup circuit? Thanks, Kenny J

    hi rick great how to. i have a question regarding tying the neutral and the ground wire together on the same lug? i have read some where that they should be on there own lugs same buss? I don't have any extra lugs so i would have to double up on the one lug or should i put the neutral wire on that lug and double the ground wire with another ground wire on the buss?

  • @mortirius1
    @mortirius1 Před 8 lety

    How did you find the white neutral? Did you just use a multi meter and test for continuity ? Or is that where the black wire leads to?

    Rick, thx for the videos! I just installed a RV solar system on my 5th wheel and would like to know if this transfer switch would work for me? My solar panel (315 watt) go's to a MPPT 12/24 volt charge controller that go's to my 2 6-volt batteries. I also have a Whistler Pro 1600 inverter hooked to my batteries. I want to run a TV and/or coffee maker occasionally without shore power or generator? I was told by a RV tech to install a TS? He did not give me any details but after watching your video it makes since to wire the TS to the breaker that operates all my wall receptacles (not sure amps right now but probably 15? Then run proper romex wiring from my Whistler 1600 inverter to the TS box? That way I can plug what ever appliance I want into any receptacle and fire it up? (toaster,vacuum etc) What do you think about my plan? Thx Bill

    Many portable generators have their earth centre tapped for safety reasons. This halves the electrical voltage to earth and makes using portable tools that much safer. However it causes difficulties when using the same generator for fixed installations. Have you come across this problem and is there a way round it?

  • @ODVenture
    @ODVenture Před 10 lety +3

    A transfer switch can power several circuits, right? As long as you have a large enough generator to power the selected circuits?

  • @RicksDIY

    It all depends on the size of the motor in your furnace, best thing is to check your nameplate sticker located on or in the furnace, look at the RLA or running amps, multiply that by your voltage, Say 3.5 amps x 120V Volts = 420 watts, multiply that by 1.25 to 1.5 for starting & other misc component watts. 1.5 x 420 = 630 watts, so a 800 Watt Generator should be able to run this example. The switch is available at Amazon; look for Heezy HTS15 Transfer Switch.

    I purchased the newer (New OCT 2013) HTS15-Auto Generator Transfer Switch recently. It's a little different than the one you use in this video. Specifically, mine doesn't have the manual Line-Off-Gen switch but instead uses a built-in relay which automatically switches to the power inlet when the 'generator' is plugged into it.
    My question is: Can I still follow the wiring procedures shown in this video to install this "New OCT 2013" transfer switch?

    • @RicksDIY
      @RicksDIY  Před 10 lety

      Yes, the New HTS15-AUTO has the same wiring method as the manual switch version, only 5 wires to hook up.

    @ 37:35 you said be careful that some generators, furnaces, etc.,,, need neutrals be tied together, so they aren't switched. Could you clarify, please. I want to set this unit up on a well water pump circuit, ... when the grid drops. .... Thank you for this video.

    Don't you have to turn off the main breaker to the house FIRST before you turn on the Generator switch on the transfer switch?

    • @RicksDIY
      @RicksDIY  Před 10 lety +5

      Nope, the switch automatically cuts off the line power from the circuit breaker.

    Rick, I run DJ equipment in a room I built and I haven't done the electrical wire yet cause I want that room on its own breaker, how would I wire a new breaker box without taping into my exciting one, I was trying to figure out how to run my new one to the main wire leads coming in to the old box, would the electric company come out and shut it off for me at the meter, if it will work that way

    • @RicksDIY
      @RicksDIY  Před 9 lety

      Scottie Parkhurst If you've never done it before might be best to call around and see if you can have an electrician stop by and check it out...look on Craigslist or call around for a low cost solution most guys can set up the additional box for only 1 hours labor plus parts...

    Seams like way to much work for One circuit. I have 10 circuit sub panel on a 5500 watt Gen. I only use 8 for water pump fridge fish tank and entertainment center. Few more switches to turn but gets me what I want or need at the moment.

      +Golfingferdie Just a more simpler way for those with the smaller 2,000 watt or smaller generators to run a gas furnace or boiler during a power outage.
