Definitely. Close to the Edge was the very first album I ever bought (8-track, of course) in 1978 when I was 14. Cliff is surely not ready for that yet, though. That's getting thrown into the deep end of Yes prog for sure.
This is simply GREAT rock. Not pop, not bubblegum. Just the greatest band EVER! And you are friends with a member of the real KANSAS? OMG, love them too. Leftoverature was almost a daily listen for me. Never missed a tour of theirs. Never missed Yes either since first seeing them live.

Trevor Rabin originally wanted to play a bluesy guitar riff in this and Trevor Horn was the one that actually talked him into playing it as you heard it. Cliff, if you're going to dive into Yes, start easy. Their prog sound from the 70's can get pretty deep. Check these out first: Roundabout Starship Trooper Heart of the Sunrise Then you might be ready for Close to the Edge. Caution: it takes up one whole side of the album so get comfortable.
Yes was my favorite band growing up in the 70's. Creativity out the wazoo lol. Not as big a fan of their work in the 80's (like Owner of a Lonely Heart), which tended to incorporate a lot of whiz-bang sound effects that I didn't really care for. Try Roundabout or Starship Trooper for the classic Yes sound I grew to know and love.

His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! Became a YES fan in the 80s, so this entire 90125 album is what I heard. Make sure to check out Leave It on this album, and Big Generator from the same name album. This was their biggest song (chart-wise), and when I got to see them several years ago, they didn't play this song! I was so disappointed! Didn't do anything off 90125 or Big Generator. Still love the albums, but won't pay to see them in concert again. Thanks for the review.
I think of the video in terms of the Matrix. They are trying to wake him from his depressing life, the government doesn't want that to happen so they nab him and send him to the basement to die. He breaks free just like Yes showed him. Something like that. 😅
I think the first thing I'd recommend for you would be more tracks off the same album 90125; Hold On, It Can Happen, Changes and Hearts cause it's kind of more of the same, early 80's Pop Rock with well written inspirational messages. From there I would go backwards to early 70's Yes tracks like Survival, Sweet Dreams, Yours is No Disgrace, All Good People and Perpetual Change and if you like all those then check out all the Yes stuff that came in between the early 70's and early 80's.
Love the song. Hate the vid. For one thing, I could have watched Jon Anderson sing for the whole time and been happy. :) You have no idea who you've uncovered. The word "iconic" gets overused, but Yes has done some work that is, indeed, iconic (Close to the Edge; Awaken). And you're right: Jon Anderson writes exceptional lyrics.

The video really ruins the song. I don't know where they came up with it. Doesn't make sense really. You gotta check out their earlier music. The greatest progressive rock band in my opinion. They have many long songs that are masterpieces. Not your usual music. Some good ones include "Roundabout", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium". "Awaken", "Turn of the Century"... Loads of good ones.
